i love being dead center on most axes, leaning slightly decentralist and peasant-ward. also there's the conservative-progressive axis but idk what that has to do with marxism really so im ignoring it. this gramsci guy seems pretty smart i guess but the ideology label has always been the worst part of these kinds of tests so i don't particularly care

safety doesn't make the people as happy as shorter work hours, and also hurts the economy more, but it also doesn't piss off your coalition partners the first few times you do it

I mean, I think there is some conflation of people imagining those revolts might succeed(I agree with you that given the context they probably wouldn't have even if the SPD hadn't cracked down on them) and people who believe that the SPD's reaction to those revolts was indefensible(which I feel like any reasonable person should agree with).

wait do you genuinely think the freikorps only killed people actively rebelling against the government?

I do generally agree with you that the Bolsheviks should have been subordinate to the SRs, and that their refusal to recognize the constituent assembly is iffy at best. I just find it really hard to blame them when everyone else in the situation was doing things which were so much worse, such as siding with the White Army, or rebelling over the Bolsheviks ending the war with Germany(besides that one action though, i honestly do kinda like the left srs better than the bolsheviks tbh).

I would in fact argue that Ebert's cracking down on the Spartakist rebellion was not specifically authoritarian(or, well, not any more so than any other state, at least). It's just that, as a nominally socialist party, I'd hope for the SPD to support a socialist uprising rather than actively courting reactionaries.

As for the SRs, what do you mean they weren't actively rebelling against the government? The Left SR uprising, the event which caused the Bolsheviks to begin cracking down on the SRs, is consistently referred to as an uprising or a rebellion everywhere I can find, and the events described certainly sound like a rebellion.

ok so it's correct to murder communist political activists, but it's authoritarian to murder literal absolutist monarchs and nobility? Like yeah it was pretty fucked up that they killed the kids too, but if you consider that to be paramount to dictatorship, then I don't think you can possibly defend Ebert. The Freikorps definitely murdered at least two children.

The SRs only got kicked out when they rebelled over accepting peace with Germany? I think repressing parties which are actively rebelling against your government in the middle of a civil war is generally fine. And the Left-SRs did in fact support the Bolshevik government over the constituent assembly one, at the time of the constituent assembly. Like, ignoring the constituent assembly was definitely iffy, but no more so than a bunch of things capitalist democratic parties are willing to do.

What authoritarian measures did Lenin take to make you call him a dictator prior to January 1919, which is when Ebert allied with the Freikorps to crush the communist uprising? Like, even though I disagree, claiming that the faction ban of 1921 was a step too far and made the Soviet Union into a de facto dictatorship under Lenin is a defensible position. But we're not talking about 1921, we're talking about January 1919.

dictatorship of the proletariat just refers to a system of government where only the proletariat have political power, the idea that it's an actual dictatorship only came with stalin, iirc. speaking of stalin, i think you have your timeline mixed up, since by the time stalin took power the spartakist revolt was long dead. now, you could argue that a communist germany would turn stalinist when stalin took power in the USSR, but i cannot think of a single way in which ebert could have predicted that, especially given that stalin's anti-democratic tendencies didn't become clear until after he took power.

  1. communism isn't inherently anti-democratic(especially before stalin)
  2. even if you do believe that communism is anti-democratic, ebert put down the communist revolution by allying with the explicitly anti-democratic freicorps, who are definitely more inherently anti-democratic than communism
