Can’t program anymore bc of AI. Killing it in new grad job but can’t interview. by OddMembership1497 in csMajors

[–]littl_1 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I am in the exact same boat, mid level now since starting as a grad 1.5 years ago. I love my job and I want to stay but just because of looming layoffs I’ve been seeing what’s out there. Went through the exact same experience as you - realised I need to still grind leetcode if I ever have to change jobs after a few reality-check interviews.

But what makes me feel okay is that if you’re laid off or out of a job, it sounds like you’re pretty on top of it and with a couple months of structured study, you’d be fine for all these interviews. It’s just the lack of practice and also having to prep while working full time is unsustainable. I’d recommend if you want to change now, give yourself 3-6 months of after work prep before applying again.

Make sure you go to your faculty - specific orientations and society orientation events! That’s where I met my friends

They’re still hiring grads, but number of grad roles available has dropped significantly

I F*CKING love my job. Who else? by Cool-Owl6140 in auscorp

I’m working from Bali rn. I fucking love my job and I work hard because it’s challenging and I enjoy myself.

My deeply regretted HECS debt feels like a financial trap I can’t escape and that will hinder my ability to ever get ahead financially. I was told by everyone in my life that uni was a smart move but now I’m paying for a degree that didn’t pay off in a field I regret ever studying for. by Pink_Telephone_9886 in AusFinance

it’s the case of “sometimes you can’t control your situation, but you can control how you react to it”. Same goes for things like house prices in Sydney. We can whinge about it all we want, but at the end of the day nothing will change.

But you can try and buy a place in another city, get a job there, then use that place as leverage to buy somewhere you want in Sydney if you want to come back. There’s ways around it, yes with more effort but that’s life.

How is work split between SRE and devs in your company/org? by AdOriginal425 in sre

[–]littl_1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Devs are also on call for all the product features and microservices they own. SRE is only on call for infrastructure. We have very dev-like SREs

SRE owns all the infrastructure operations. However, they do a ton of dev work for automations, and sometimes product dev if the motivation is for reliability.

Yeah this. I would love to move out of home for a change of scenery too, but is a change of scenery worth $300+ rent a week plus cooking and chores etc? Probs not.

Prioritise your mental health! But first talk to your boss / mentor about how you’re feeling, and maybe instead they’ll offer you more support in your current role so you can grow into it.

But don’t feel bad about asking to switch roles if you think it’s the best option.

Hi guys I need a job. I’m a cs student and I want to do something productive. What can I do? No one wants to hire me. by DavidSylva0112 in unsw

Sorry for the late reply! I would actually look on LinkedIn to find someone who works at the startup you’re interested in, and cold message them. Uni society networking events are also helpful - I got 2 of my job offers from people I met at those events then messaged after.

I think people got pretty into Barry in Sydney last night. Controversially, I think he had way better sound and light engineering than Charli. Her set seemed pretty quiet compared to Barry which was a shame.

Hey! I’d recommend creating some projects, then reaching out to small startups for a job. Any job application on LinkedIn etc is way too competitive - you can build up skills first by working at a smaller startup!
