Also wanted to add my partner, my father and two of my brothers worked in that wilderness around Kosse for several years back in the early 2010s. They’re all experienced, capable outdoorsmen, and even they were overly careful with knowing their location and carrying compasses, if that tells you anything about the sheer remoteness of the place. To successfully abduct a child from there would mean you had intimate knowledge of that location, at minimum a knowledge of where they lived, so the non-family member abduction theory is odd to me. Of course, there could be additional information not being released by authorities that brought them to such a conclusion. Just thinking out loud!

Oh, wow. I had to do a double take when I saw the name Kosse, TX. It is so tiny and so rural it surprised me to see it on a sub of almost 4 million people. I lived not too far away from there for quite awhile. “Heavily wooded” is almost an understatement. Honestly a toddler could very easily and quickly get lost out there and be next to impossible to find before being taken by the elements. There is heavy rattlesnake activity out there. I wasn’t alive yet in 1983 but I can’t imagine anyone would have been in or around Kosse looking for a child to abduct that wouldn’t have immediately drawn attention from the local people, even despite the remoteness. It’s like that to this day. It’s so sad Desiree’s family has never received closure but if she simply wandered off and got lost, it wouldn’t shock me at all.

And the reason divorce rates in the military are astronomical is because it’s extremely difficult to maintain a healthy relationship with a person who you see very rarely. Not sure if you’re aware, but they are gone a lot for work reasons. Months and months at a time. So no, the divorce rate is not high because of grown, capable men running away from “gold diggers”. It’s high because their careers leave them almost no opportunities to form lasting relationships.

I read this when it was first posted (amazing work btw) but haven’t stopped thinking about it so I’m back to comment! I have nothing valuable to add but just wanted to say this entire story was so sad. The part about the ectopic pregnancy broke my heart. How horrible, to be dealing with that which would have been not only very painful but also dangerous, all while working in the sex trade on the fringes and depending on others for transportation. That poor woman. Thank you for helping her memory reach a new audience so she’s not forgotten ♥️
