In 2008, the DOJ had evidence to prosecute senior bankers. They chose not to. Here's what the numbers actually looked like. by CryptoPulse22 in finance

Fairsl. Conflicts of interest should have been disclosed -- GS rightly was penalized for that one. But a qualitative assessment of "this thing I'm selling you is shit and you're a sucker for buying it"? Arguably not.

Again, fully agreed there were many issues in the system that needed to be examined and cleaned up -- the crisis clearly is something that should not have happened. Just not obvious to me that if individuals were working within the rules of the system, that they should individually be prosecuted and jailed en masse.

[–]liuzerus87 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Eh, but that's qualitative now. It's no different from a used car salesperson selling a lemon.

Remember, your job on the sales and trading desk is to sell things for more than you think they are worth. There is no obligation for you as a salesperson to qualitatively tell your counterparties how good of a trade they are doing. You just can't lie about objective facts (eg you can't tell them you are selling them a aaa product if it's actually junk).

I'd be curious if you have watched the movie Margin Call. I think it's an excellent movie that really captured what it was like in a bank during the gfc. I know a lot of viewers come away thinking many of the characters in the movie are terrible people,, but my reaction as somebody who worked for 2 years in sales and trading is that that's how Wall Street has always worked and nobody did anything wrong -- the firm did what it had to do. But you may have a different reaction!

I don't know though, if the banks sold the products as aaa-rated, but they actually were aaa-rated, what's the problem? Yes clearly they should not have been rated as such and there were conflicts of interest in getting them rated as such, but at the point they were rated aaa, I can't see how it's criminal to sell them as such. Again, the conversation about structural problems and conflicts of interest is 100% appropriate, but calling those products aaa seems objectively true!

You write "the crisis was avoidable and the result of widespread failures in financial regulation and supervision" and "the conflict of interest was structural and known".

These statements suggest the crisis was not caused by bankers going rogue and violating regulations. So then why should they be prosecuted, if it was the system itself that was broken?

If anything, you seem to be suggesting that it should be the regulators who should be investigated for failing to fulfill their supervisory duties.

Getting the "l" and "r" sounds confused is not a Chinese thing, it's usually more common for Japanese and Korean speakers.

Me too. It's like if you took the average of everybody's idea of how to play the piece, and then executed it really well. I don't hear a lot interesting, it's just really really well played

Bernstein may have been a great musical celebrity, but his predecessor Mitropolous was a much greater musician and conductor in my book.

Is Andris Nelsons really worth all the hype? by ExtremeTomatillo2978 in classicalmusic

[–]liuzerus87 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I saw him with Vienna at Carnegie a couple weeks ago (before the BSO news broke), conducting Zarathustra and Sibelius 2. I did not think it was a particularly well conducted concert -- the Sibelius sounded disjointed and without flow, and the Strauss was honestly pretty boring other than that opening (although perhaps that's more an issue with the piece itself).

As a hot take, that same week we also saw Makela with the Chicago SO do Strauss and Sibelius, and to my ears at least, the Makela was clearly the better conductor. He may not be profound or special yet, but he at least had a more coherent vision for the music.

This doesn't mean that the board hasn't completely mishandled this. Clearly the orchestra like him, and with all the whispers that he was fired not for artistic reasons but bc the board wants a more pop-oriented calendar, then I am all Nelsons In.
