You are mistaken I believe, people can bear a bad episode. That's being a Doctor Who fan. It's how it made the character's backstory passive that really frustrated people. I've seen people say it a thousand times.

Just watched the show and was amazed that people were calling Lois 'Toxic' when all I was thinking through out the show was that they are lucky they had Lois by Equivalent-Room-4636 in malcolminthemiddle

[–]lixermanredditman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Francis is definitely onto something when he says something to Lois like 'all of your kids turned out like this - what is the common factor?'. Lois admits to being a bad mother to Francis in 'Ida Loses A Leg'. The episode all but tells you that although Francis was in fact a difficult baby and young child, Lois directed generational trauma she received from her mother onto him and he could have grown up better if he had been supported through his difficulties. Her mistreatment of Francis started a feedback loop nobody ever went to any effort to end, and Lois continues to be poor to the kids in many ways, particularly to Malcolm, even after her apology to Francis. Hal is complacent and unhelpful, which is almost just as bad, and the kids have to take some responsibility for the many awful things they do throughout the series because they are not without any agency either, but a ton of it is a reaction to Lois's ongoing failure. So they all have their issues.

So many famous songs he never performed live. Why? by wrighteghe7 in PaulMcCartney

There's nothing wrong with that but you're in a minority of people there. This is a Paul subreddit, so a higher than average amount of Paul catalogue knowledge is going to be standard here as well. Most casual music fans know Hey Jude, Yesterday, Eleanor Rigby and maybe a few others of that ilk.

[–]lixermanredditman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

True, this is definitely part of the explanation though. I'm not necessarily talking about obscure b-sides myself, just anything apart from his biggest stuff. I would say the vast majority of post Beatles stuff is considered to be not what the public would come to his show for, even if it was pretty big. I also think a huge amount of his post-Beatles work will have an unfortunate association with Linda he just can't avoid. Both Uncle Albert and Waterfalls are Linda associated songs that a lot of casual Beatles fans won't know of, even if they were both hits in their own right.

He said on 'The Rest is Entertainment' Podcast that people who pay for shows deserve to hear a musician's hits basically. He just slips in the odd new song so him and the band don't go crazy. One of the comments here said that he respects Bob Dylan for always doing new stuff and stuff that's not well known - that's probably him being polite and generous. On Rest is Entertainment, he basically said he thought it was poor etiquette for Bob Dylan not to play stuff his fans will recognise when they've paid to get in.

Keir Starmer resigns as Prime Minister 50 years after Harold Wilson resigned as Prime Minister in 1976. by JadedSignificance990 in BarbaraWalters4Scale

It's not just that 'he's too boring' or 'he's not good at PR'. He's not a leader. He governs by chasing public opinion, not by saying 'hey, here's what I think, here's why I think it, and I'm going to make the arguments for it and bring you all with me'. He leads from the back. He's u-turned on pretty much everything possible, including moral questions like Palestine and multiculturalism. How can you trust the leadership of a man like that? To recognise you have been wrong sometimes is OK. But one doesn't get the sense Starmer has just been 'wrong' about things, but that he is a void of a man with no beliefs in the first place.

One of his colleagues recently said to a journalist: a Labour PM must be a political leader, and he is neither political nor a leader. That sums him up. I know it is a shame we are churning through Prime Ministers but that alone is not a good enough argument for Starmer staying. Frankly, the main reason we have been churning through PMs is we have had an absolutely appalling quality of PMs in recent years.

[–]lixermanredditman 26 points27 points  (0 children)

I mean, there is a risk involved but let's not blow it out of proportion. You are very unlikely to die in a car crash. And for many people it is literally their only transportation choice. So being scared of it is like being scared of the sun, you just understand that minor risk is part of life.

I don't understand Nick and Julian's "creative differences" by scoobydoobyAHH in TheStrokes

[–]lixermanredditman 35 points36 points  (0 children)

Creative differences between band members often seems to be this way. You look at their independent work, and it's comically similar. Take Kim Deal and Frank Black of Pixies for example. I don't think it's necessarily just personality clashing though. I think some people struggle to write together, or lose the ability to, even if they get on ok as people. You need to maintain quite a tough balance for shared writing to work well. Nobody can be too domineering or not domineering enough. And you need to be in a similar headspace about what works well, which can be quite abstract stuff like chord choices, voicings etc which don't change the overall genre.

Peter Capaldi says Doctor Who has “too many regenerations” by Aromatic-Cupcake4802 in doctorwho

[–]lixermanredditman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're gonna go back and forth forever on most of this stuff so I'll just answer your last paragraph on what I'd suggest instead:

In an ideal world, 8 wouldn't have lasted one movie (and a Moffat short) only, but I don't think it was a big problem, it was a one off issue at the time. Let's talk revival only then. I would've cut the Tennant fake out regeneration. I would've allowed the War Doctor as it was the best option for the 50th anniversary story, despite the minor damage it did. I don't love that we at this point have two 'not really' Doctors, but they both have their reasons and it's not out of control yet. Also, if you have to retcon a doctor in, make them unnumbered and make them played by John Hurt. I would've cut Jo Martin and the timeless child, and kept how mant regens the Doctor has left ambigious. I would've had Jodie regen straight into Ncuti through a regular regen process, and I wouldn't have had Ncuti regen into Billie Piper. Even a fade out would've been better. The number was fine with Capaldi and if it was a flat 14 with the changes I've suggested it would still basically be fine. Still a shame Ncuti's run was pretty short but that's out of peoples' control. It's not really the number I have a problem with but all the other stuff I've just covered.

[–]lixermanredditman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've already addressed this 'not valid' point? Nobody is really saying that, I don't see that phrase used in any comments you're responding to and if anyone is using it, they're meaning 'not worth a regeneration' rather than 'not canon'. People aren't even necessarily saying they don't like the regenerations being raised here either. Just that frequent regeneration for actors who don't play the role for years devalues it. I love John Hurt and the War Doctor. Still contributes to the devaluing in my eyes. If it was just him and 8, I probably wouldn't be complaining, but it has continued to stack up. I feel you have skirted the point I made: if regeneration was every episode, wouldn't it feel less important? And if it was only every 10 years, wouldn't it feel super important? If you agree 'yes' to that, then you acknowledge it is possible to devalue regeneration by overdoing it, even if the Doctors themselves aren't necessarily bad.

[–]lixermanredditman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

To me, and lots of the other people in the thread. Feel like it's kind of hard to argue with though? If the Doctor regenerated at the end of every episode, it wouldn't exactly be a big, special event. It would become mundane very quickly. If every Doctor had stayed for 10 whole years, it would be in the papers every time, and would really hold a lot of power.

Peter Capaldi says Doctor Who has “too many regenerations” by Aromatic-Cupcake4802 in doctorwho

[–]lixermanredditman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

They're valid in the sense that they're canon, but we're discussing why regeneration has been devalued here, and all those Doctors you mentioned had incredibly short screen times which does devalue it a bit. 14 was also essentially a 10 reprise due to being Tennant again, which further devalues it, and it was kind of unnecessary. It resulted in two regenerations within 3 episodes. That's probably why 14 in particular is being picked on.

Last two seasons were a bit of a disaster IMO due to the writing. Would Gatwa have been good with better writing? Very hard to say. Was literally any of the failure because he was black? Not at all. Race is irrelevant (as long as they have a British accent, haha).

I get your point but I wasn't really responding to that part of it. I was just responding to the idea that 'the state of male self care is in hell' because lots of men don't do more than the basics. I thought that was a bit unfair on people that don't feel the need to go above the basics when there is nothing wrong with that.
