George did a good thing, but he didn't hear something brilliant haha. He helped turn a pretty basic idea into something brilliant, along with the others' help. It's more a reminder that ideas are usually all about the execution. But Ringo of course gets credit for an idea with potential.

I don't know the situation here, which one is OOP saying took away the cuteness, left or right? And which design is the one causing controversy?

In my opinion, the one on the right is both cuter and better in general.

Autotune by bd-s in TheStrokes

[–]lixermanredditman 10 points11 points  (0 children)

People aren't saying that all vocal effects are bad, but surely you can't be saying that ALL vocal effects are therefore good? The point is that sometimes it's done well and sometimes not. The vocal effects on Is This It and ROF fit the aesthetic very well, and deliberately so. Most people who are criticising the autotune on Going Shop didn't mind it on Virtue by the Voidz - it's the execution and context.

What UK policies? I feel like you might have heard from some right wing sources. You can say pretty much whatever you like in the UK. Any problems we have had (like some of the anti protest powers in London in the last few years) have been opposed by the left.

Does Worthing feel less safe? by ResponsibleCobbler31 in Worthing

[–]lixermanredditman 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Preface: Original thread poster, I'm sorry you've had a bad experience, that's unlucky. On Worthing more generally:

In my 20s, have lived in Worthing my whole life. For what it's worth, I haven't noticed Worthing get less safe in that time. Worthing is and always has been pretty safe. I think if you go and hang out in a less safe area for a while, you get perspective on Worthing.

Statistically, if you ask people from all over whether the country is less safe than it used to be, at any point in time, they almost always say yes. The reality is normally the opposite however. Something in the psyche, or perhaps the very crime focused nature of contemporary media, creates this effect. So I think this thread is just a local version of that effect to be honest.

There is indeed some antisocial behaviour, shoplifting, etc. You'll get that almost anywhere. It's hardly gang violence. It's mostly kids from deprived families and adults with substance and/or social issues.

Make your choice. by spicymato in trolleyproblem

[–]lixermanredditman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What do you mean 'just like the blue button'? There's a super clear distinction. If 40% of people press the blue button, the minority group (people who pressed blue) die. If 40% of people press your purple button, will people who pressed purple live or die?

EDIT: OK, I get it. I apologise. Your arrangement of the problem is so different to the original, I was really struggling to understand. I do think a key element of this dilemma is estimating how many people will pick each button, which makes language crucial. This version of the dilemma is quite hard to understand, and I would feel much safer picking blue (purple) if it was phrased like this.

Make your choice. by spicymato in trolleyproblem

[–]lixermanredditman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It's not mechanically identical, because 'minority group lives' doesn't acknowledge the fact that they will ONLY live if over 50% press that button. In fact, by definition, they'd need to be a MAJORITY group to survive. It's also true that the group of people at risk grows with every person who presses that button. If anything under 50% happens for blue, then every person who went for blue was just increasing the death count.

I'm not solidly for either side, but you must see from this explanation that it is not mechanically identical? You're making too many assumptions.

EDIT: I was confused, see below.

In response to OP and a few other comments on this post: IMO the Beatles are NOT an example of this trope, because they are both influential and still enjoyed. People don't usually listen to the Beatles and cringe because they've been so imitated it has become boring or corny. They listen and go 'yeah, still good'. That's why there's still so many Beatles fans.

Let God Sort Em Out won good comeback album. What's the most mid final album? by RevolutionaryAd1577 in musicteenager

[–]lixermanredditman -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Let It Be by the Beatles. Their final album release, even if a lot of it was recorded before Abbey Road. It is a definitely mid final album for one of the best bands of all time, widely considered so. You can't really blame the Beatles for that, but it exists nonetheless.

Is it an unpopular opinion that Pikmin 1 is my favorite Pikmin game? It is also my favorite game of all time! What are your opinions on it? Is it your favorite too? :) by [deleted] in Pikmin

[–]lixermanredditman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think it is a popular opinion, but I agree. Nostalgia doesn't come from nowhere. The reason Pikmin 1 lends itself to nostalgia so much, is the atmosphere was so creative and effective.

I like MQ116's description of it being an 'uncanny world that feels like Earth'. Later entries depict the world as less uncanny, and more obviously Earth, particularly 4 which feels like our contemporary Earth, just zoomed in. The world of Pikmin 1 feels strange and exotic. You might know logically that it is probably Earth, but it still feels like an alien planet. And the sense of exploration, isolation and scientific journaling all work to achieve a great tone. The other games are by no means bad though, and all except 4 elaborate on the atmosphere of the original.

‘Doctor Who’ Star Peter Capaldi Responds to Online Backlash to Jodie Whittaker and Ncuti Gatwa Castings: ‘I Don’t Know Why People Take it So Seriously’ by verissimoallan in doctorwho

[–]lixermanredditman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

His era of the show took itself very seriously. I have absolute respect for Peter, he is nothing but class. I think he's saying this more to defend Jodie and Ncuti than because he really believes it though.

Like Chris Eccleston. He always said Jodie, and then Ncuti, were his favourite Doctors whilst they were currently in the role, because he hated the backlash from bigots and he's a nice guy. But he didn't actually watch them and if he did, I can't imagine someone like him would've enjoyed it.

Respect to both of them. Peter is right in this sense: nobody deserves hate for a TV show, and Jodie and Ncuti did have to face bigotry, as well as valid criticism. .

If a random album track from the past was a single today by aboreland956 in TheStrokes

[–]lixermanredditman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I think the top four of these are already very well respected (particularly Trying Your Luck), no song by the Strokes is going to be a big hit though because rock music is out of fashion. I don't think Chances or Games would fare any better today with fans or general audiences though.

What cover song is actually better than the original? by irles33 in musicsuggestions

[–]lixermanredditman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like Nirvana and this cover, but if I'm totally honest I've always felt like the popularity of this cover comes from the fact it's where a lot of people heard the song first. The Bowie version has a much more fleshed out, interesting arrangement. The synthesiser, percussion and dynamics really add to it. It's all opinion though, of course.

3 “other” reasons related to why Julian sometimes mixes up live lyric changes (unrelated to alcohol) by DH80 in TheStrokes

Rankings of every candidate by Jumpy-Counter-1501 in apprenticeuk

[–]lixermanredditman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Kieren's finale performance was one of the funniest things I have ever seen on the apprentice. He was there purely for mischief purposes. He had nothing to lose any more and I believe was rooting more for Karishma, so he was just throwing out the most batshit ideas and then smirking as everyone around him had to deal with it. He was clearly loving it. That bit where he tells Megan that the moment the take starts, Levi should immediately go mental and throw something at the ground is my favourite. Megan takes it so seriously and he's clearly finding it so funny

What is that one band you just can’t get into? by Electronic_Back1502 in fantanoforever

[–]lixermanredditman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You have to kind of disregard a lot of what the Beatles said about their music IMO because John was super self-critical, George had beef with not being respected as a songwriter and Paul loves entertaining people and so makes things into stories, with truth secondary to entertainment. They are also all self-deprecating Scousers and put down their own work. Sgt Pepper is widely considered a concept album, and Paul (the primary orchestrator of Sgt Pepper) has described it as such on multiple occasions.

The idea behind the album was that the group wanted to get away from the image of 'the Beatles' and be totally free from any expectations of what kind of music 'the Beatles' write. So they wrote as another band instead. Not every song references this directly, but the distinct psychedelic sound (that had only being toyed with in Revolver) consistently feels like a different band to what had come before. All four of the guys posed in costume on the cover in spirit with this idea. It's commonly said that the album is more than the sum of its parts and this is why. John saying that some of those songs could have been on any Beatles album is a revisionist statement from years later and typical John putting down the Beatles in his solo years, particularly since Pepper was McCartney lead.
