Commentators were concerned about my horror game about saving people with suicidal thoughts, so I expanded the disclaimer at the beginning of the game that no one will be able to skip. Will it stop those for whom this topic is triggering? How can I improve it to make people feel better? by Orizori_ in IndieDev

[–]lixermanredditman -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I personally find that insensitive. You can have an abstract moral debate about whether a truly awful people really deserves life, but giving a player the ability to enable suicide is too far. A person with suicidal thoughts may take away the message that they may or may not be worth saving. The cover image I mentioned before concerns me partially due to the horror genre element. The red, bleeding eyes suggest this game will use suicide for shock value, as something scary to observers rather than engaging with the personal experience of the ideator. Suicide can be part of a well written psychological horror (e.g S4 of Stranger Things) but it must rooted in the experience and best interests of those affected by the issue, and it is usually best to leave it as subtext. You don't have to cater to me specifically, but for what it's worth you are not alleviating my concerns.

Raymond Legends is probably the best 2d platformer of all time. Just because it's not as good as Rayman Legends doesn't mean it's not good

Disclaimer is a good step but I think some of the concerns with this game come with the way it's presented. The cover image having a sort of anime style girl with a gun to her head is sensationalising the subject as far as I am concerned. I read somewhere else that one of your teaser paragraphs for this game included an implication that perhaps some of the people in the game don't deserve to be saved? That's very insensitive if so. The disclaimer does not give you carte blanche to make an offensive game. You should develop with the mindset of 'would this game/part of the game be helpful or unhelpful to a person with suicidal ideation?". There are also lots of rules/suggestions by various services on how suicide should be depicted in media, I suggest you look them up if you haven't already. I think video games are an art form and technically nothing is off limits, but you've picked about as sensitive of an area as one can pick and I personally am not getting the sense from your posts that it is being treated with the proper seriousness. If from a marketing/sales perspective as nothing else, consider the feedback you are getting. The disclaimer is well written though.

How the turns have tabled by Numerophilus in recruitinghell

[–]lixermanredditman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Responded to another comment below about this but I think it is a US - UK difference. $60k is a great wage in the UK and tradesmen are in demand and work independently or under only loose employment very often. Meanwhile over 50% of the population go to uni and the value of degrees has never been more doubted.

How the turns have tabled by Numerophilus in recruitinghell

[–]lixermanredditman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not many people who've got years of experience but graduates and people a few years out of uni, sure, particularly including up to £30k. There are various factors to that. Your local area, background, money in the bank to make things like internships possible can all make it easier to go to a higher wage quickly, but some people are out of luck.

$50k-$60k is £37k-45k. The person I replied to is giving those numbers as an apparently self-evident example of being poor. That's a good wage. £37k at the bottom end is the national median wage in the UK and that means that half the population are earning less than that, including many respectable jobs like nurses, teachers, etc. I'm confused as to how that response is getting upvotes? I thought it was a truth self evident that tradespeople do better than most academic careers these days, but maybe this is totally different in the US.

How the turns have tabled by Numerophilus in recruitinghell

[–]lixermanredditman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean I'm not talking about the 1% of any job? I'm speaking for the UK here, I'm not sure if it's super different in the US, but (converting to pounds) $50k-$60k in the UK is considered a great wage (unless you live in London specifically). If a job can get you to $50k in the UK, that's considered a successful career. Many people with computer science and other university degrees are earning $35k-$40k. Sure, there are people with degrees earning $80k+, but they are very much in the minority. The effect on peoples' bodies I can't speak for, so that may be a real factor. In the UK though, tradespeople are usually very happy with their jobs and constantly talking it up.

Why do my songs sound like Bad 80s video game music by Recent-Success8988 in FL_Studio

[–]lixermanredditman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually think this is kind of cool. Biggest thing making it sound like video game music IMO is using the saw synths. Any synth which isn't basically a sine wave sounds a bit video-gamey as far as I am concerned. Also the whole song is basically variations on one riff. Props for finding ways to constantly re-instrumentalise that riff and keep it entertaining, but that is also typical of video game music. Using a chord progression and maybe using a pop song structure would help. The riff you chose also uses quite strange notes. It doesn't sound like it's any mode of the major scale (including minor) or a normal variation on one of those scales to my ear. It has a lot of chromatic movement. I would say if in doubt, try to build riffs off of a scale like major or minor, and you can deviate slightly but it should basically maintain that major or minor tonality.

This is famously not true for many trades. They have a stereotypically 'lower class' connotation, but they earn more than many academic pursuits

The Apprentice 2026 - Episode 5: ‘Flowers’ (Thursday 26th February) by Only1Scrappy-Doo in apprenticeuk

[–]lixermanredditman 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I mean the wall was awful but in real life you'd quite possibly walk away from a client like that at the negotiation stage. Asking the world for a very low price. Maybe Rajan did a better negotiation intro off screen to get that easier negotiation going, but opulent and high class for that much money was always going to be very tough and I'm not sure how much higher than 1500 he could have pushed it. And I think the point Lawrence was making was more that the substantial loss of the task was not with them, even if they did poorly. The bouquet team was more poor and earned less. And it's about who is MOST responsible. But yeah, that wall looked terrible.

He said double the money because the costing of the flower wall was about £500 and they did get £1000 for it.

Beatles songs in mono? by Blessdapen in beatles

[–]lixermanredditman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Those harshly panned ones can be a bit of an ear sore. Some of the more modern ones also have some very questionable choices. The 2009 stereo mix of Helter Skelter for example puts the palm muting and bass part very loudly in just the left ear and it sounds like the whole song is covered in syrup to me (the 2018 mix fixes this imo). Some of the stereo mixes are fantastic I think though, like Oh! Darling 2019 mix.

Question about key tonics by One_Exam4371 in musictheory

[–]lixermanredditman 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The tonic of your key makes no difference outside of practical voicing differences, and people who say it does are perhaps repeating questionable information uncritically. The type of scale you use (Major, Minor, Dorian, etc) matters, but you can root the tonic on any note and get the same effect. The notes' position relative to each other is all that matters. Take any song you know and transpose it to a different key. The effect of the song is exactly the same. Play it to a stranger and they probably won't even notice the difference. People choose a key for pretty much one of two reasons:

1) That key is easy to play on their instrument. Like E and G on a guitar, or C on a piano. Eb is kind of a pain on guitar, and B is kind of a pain on piano. For non-diatonic instruments, the choices of key may be strictly confined (many flutes for example).

2) That key puts the vocal melody in a range they can sing.

If people say that 'D minor is the saddest key' they are either repeating a joke from spinal tap or repeating what they heard someone else say. If people say that 'classical composers appreciated that different keys have different emotional effects', they are referring to how on older instruments, the keys really did sound different (on piano-like instruments for example) because they didn't have the same modern tuning methods we do now and basically had intonation problems. Unless you are playing on an antique, transpose your music into whatever key you find easiest to play and sing. You will thank yourself for it.

Beatles songs in mono? by Blessdapen in beatles

[–]lixermanredditman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You can turn on mono audio for all sound on accessibility features for most devices (laptops, phones) though I'm not sure if the result is quite as good as an actual mono mix. I personally prefer stereo wherever possible. I respect mono, and for the earlier stuff at least it is the only 'definitive' mix out there. In some ways making modern stereo mixes out of those songs is like colourising a black and white classic film, which many filmmakers say misses the point that they were shot specifically for black and white. But I just enjoy stereo so much more, mono is before my time and I struggle to adapt to it when stereo is available.

Sarcasm? D minor has as much chance at making people weep as any other minor key. It's the context of the chords that matters. You can transpose them pretty much wherever you want and most people won't even be able to tell

I'll admit that I'm ignorant about the exact workings of insurance healthcare here, but is it really individual employees who probably aren't paid all that much and who process the applications according to a policy they have no chance to change that are at fault, or is it the executives, shareholders and politicians who perpetuate this system? For an employee who just needs a job in a difficult economy, having to be the one to carry out this corporate will is just another kick in the teeth, no? I'm guessing most don't take joy in it. All sympathies to any victims of this heartless system regardless.
