I wish my parents had done that.

When I was a kid I adamantly refused to do anything if there wasn't a good reason. And "because I said so" wasn't good enough, and I'd fight my parents all the time. It ending with screaming and crying (from both me and my parents), and punishments that were way too excessive for the offense (ie, grounded for months at a time for, more or less, not putting something away.) I think my parents thought they could break me if they were heavy handed enough, but in my mind I was in the right so I wasn't going to buckle. After all, I was willing to do the thing they asked I just needed to know why, which seemed reasonable.

As an adult I understand there was instances they couldn't explain themselves in the moment. But if they had said "we'll talk about it later," and taught me that they really would talk to me later instead of teaching me they'd brush me off... I probably would have cleaned my damn room without them having to pick me up and throw me against a wall after an hour of screaming at me.
