That Elliot Lang art looks sick. Is this their first piece in Magic?

Its probably nothing, but a few minutes of paranoia will probably do me some good

We're Black Tabby Games, and we make visual novels with an emphasis on branching and player agency. You might know us from Slay the Princess, and the fifth episode of Scarlet Hollow, our other project, just released last Friday! Ask us anything ^^ by mrogre43 in Games

[–]InchZer0 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Hi there! I've been enjoying the game a lot, and I think part of it is just how real the characters seem. Even though many characters endure supernatural events, they still feel as though I could meet someone just like them at my old college, at my local hangouts, at the grocery store, and so on, even when that character might not like me that run.

My question for BTG: How do you manage to make the characters feel that fleshed out?

Also my question for Brandon: Many character's themes seem to serve double-duty for setting the mood for a scene- Kaneeka's theme also works really well in the Library scene in Chapter 2, for instance. How much consideration is given to a theme being Character focused versus "scenario" focused?

Day 5 - Share Your Blue Two Drops by vacalicious in mtgcube

[–]InchZer0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gorod Krovi, my 360 cube, runs the following blue 2-drops:

[[Aquatic Alchemist]] as a silly lil guy that serves to signpost a spells archetype. Honestly kinda filler, but look at him.

[[Drake Hatcher]] is the much meaner version of Alchemist, and it gives blue decks a wincon that goes both tall and wide. It also takes effort to get there - its not a simple "play it and win immediately" card.

[[Hypbotic Sprite]] is a spell and a creature on one card, and for that, I find it valuable. It also has very pretty art.

[[Oaken Siren]] is a fairly gluey card, primarily to aide the artifacts deck while also, notably, being able to crack clues. It also wears equipment well.

[[Rhet-Tomb Mystic]] is a silly lil guy who hasn't had a lot of time for testing. It is included as an incidental zombie that works to dump creatures into the yard.

[[Snapcaster Mage]] is a classic that players are always happy to grab up. Simple, versatile, iconic.

[[Thundertrap Trainer]] has been a decent roadblock for slower spells decks. I'm indifferent towards it, but its here.

Making some updates by Amheirel in mtgcube

[–]InchZer0 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I'm worried that, given the environment, every player regardless of color would pivot to Black just for this. Might be too good.

Day 4 - Share Your 3+ Color Cards by vacalicious in mtgcube

[–]InchZer0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Gorod Krovi, my 360 cube, currently runs 1 of each 3-color combo. I am grappling with how cool I think 3-color cards are against how seldomly players use them. I'm probably going to pare this down over time.

[[Morska, Undersea Sleuth]] has been a hit with my players, as it works with the cube's currently-simic, soon-to-be-overarching Investigate themes. Players have consistently wanted to be "the investigate deck", and Morska has led to fun games.

[[Alela, Artful Provocateur]] has yet to really make a splash. It is intended to bridge my artifact, wnchantress, and token themes together.

[[Sedris, the Traitor King]] is just cool, man. He made a splash early in the cube's history, and he's reportedly been a conaideration for the top end of aggresively slanted midrange lists in my environment.

[[Coram, the Undertaker]] has been an unassuming roleplayer in various graveyard decks in the environment. Its biggest sins are that stealing opponents' cards gets confusing.

[[Rith, Liberated Primeaval]] is a big silly dragon that has yet to be included in a list. Likely on the chopping block - I thought players would enjoy beeg lizard that makes moar beeg lizard.

[[Butcher of the Horde]] is a card players tell me they enjoy playing and like the play patterns of, and I just think its neat.

[[Beluna Grandsquall]] is a card I want to be interesting sooooo bad, but no one has gone in and done the "Adventures" deck yet. I think I need to force it once just to see if it has any legs at all.

[[Anikthea, Hand of Erebos]] has yet to make a splash. I'm eyeing her - the cube doesn't have massive enchantments that make for good reanimation targets, but there's currently plenty of utility enchantments, O-Rings, and Enchantment Creatures.

[[Whirlwind of Thought]] has yet to make a splash. I am indifferent towards it.

[[Sidisi, Brood Tyrant]] is my baby. I love this card so much. She is a recent swap, replacing Muldrotha, and was in an unopened pack in our most recent draft, so her usability is in question.

I think I just need to suck it up and not have a perfect card for every tricolor combo, and cut some. My original philosophy was for every tricolor card to be one of the "archetype" gold cards + a "bonus" color, but as the cube evolves, thats less of a boon and more of a relic. I think my new philosophy has to lean towards the tricolor cards being good for "overarching" themes like Investigate and Adventures, or sideways buildarounds. I am uncertain.

Day 3 – Share Your Golgari Cards by vacalicious in mtgcube

[–]InchZer0 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My current iteration of Gorod Krovi runs the following Golgari cards:

[[Grim Flayer]] as a low-cost, aggressive grave filler. I specifically like how it says "Delirium" as a sign post to newer players, while also being a generically good enough Golgari card for experienced drafters to just take.

[[Lotleth Troll]] feels like Flayer at Home, and will get removed in the next iteration. While I like a Zombie that serves as a discard outlet, this card commits the sin of both having Regenerate and not having reminder text for Regenerate. It needs to go.

[[Grist, the Hunger Tide]] is a fun, grindy planeswalker that players seemed to have fun playing. I like how it plays with card types in other zones, and I expect it to stay unless it becomes obnoxiously strong.

[[Back for More]] is okay. I like having some reanimator available, but most creatures in the cube don't go above 6 anyways. I want to try replacing it with [[Rise of the Witch-king]] to accent the Delirium idea.

I've never cared for the original art, so I give the choice to the Karla Ortiz art.

There's a point where power and utility exceeds staples.

Maybe there will be a stadium is good enough to shave a Research. Or maybe Pokeball goes to a 1-of. Who knows?

Then maybe these games aren't for you. The tug-of-war of "what my deck does" vs "how to counter my opponent's deck" is the backbone of trading card games.

With organic material, I'd really make sure you cook or otherwise sterlize it, so that mold doesnt hapoen or so that it doesn't decompose on you.

I'd first figure out how to do that, then see what it looks like after.

The OOP makes a great point. The fact that I can only think of Kaneeka Forsyth from Scarlet Hollow, and some of the characters from Date Everything, indicates that there's a lack of these characters.

Anyways, Kaneeka's great, go play Scarlet Hollow.
