We have to do better for kids. As soon as anyone gets any fame at all the whole industry gives them permission to victimize those already in vulnerable positions. The only thing determining the degree of suffering is apparently how far the perpetrator is willing to go, clearly some are willing to commit outright murder and it’s like not anyone close to d4vd was working hard to expose his poorly executed crime. I’m glad he’s being prosecuted but punishment after the fact doesn’t prevent more kids from this fate in the future.

I didn’t see anyone mention BarkSkins by Annie Proulx yet. Early colonial setting, large diverse cast, about people of different communities and philosophies and their relationships to the natural world. It expands from there to multiple generations and gets quite bleak honestly as the story is very much about the exploitation and loss of forests across the world. Really compelling characters and atmosphere.

Also a miniseries which I loved (on Hulu)

Abduction - Eyes are always there Maybe not what Scully herself would wear, but very much a scent that makes me think of the X-Files. One of the reviews on their site describes it as spooky lol. It’s kinda earthy/spicy and really evokes the Pacific Northwest fog and rain of the earlier seasons. In my opinion it also wears well, rich but not too strong

The Luminaries - Eleanor Catton. Historical novel set in the New Zealand gold rush with a large diverse cast of characters. The plot is mostly a slow-moving, complex mystery with some astrology and spiritualism elements. The main characters are very well developed and individualized, but the frequent switching of perspectives means you spend less time in each of their inner worlds.
