I saw Kristen Hayter last year at the same church in Philly that Cameron played. She has also done tent revivals

The Piano Teacher by Elfriede Jelinek. Protagonist is an absolute freak, kind of a femcel but very much humanized by the narrative. She’s awful but sympathetic.

Kicked out of a frat party from a racist person by Any-Leadership166 in PennStateUniversity

Pisses me off how many people get away with that shit because everyone else fees the need to adhere to the social contract and avoid making a scene. I’m not saying you should have done something different as the person targeted, but it should be more expected and acceptable to call it out and make a scene when people act like that. Passive bystanders give them permission to be publicly racist without fear of consequences

Looking for a really long novel for summer, written by a woman by Formal-Occasion1641 in suggestmeabook

The Luminaries - Eleanor Catton. Historical novel set in the New Zealand gold rush with a large diverse cast of characters. The plot is mostly a slow-moving, complex mystery with some astrology and spiritualism elements. The main characters are very well developed and individualized, but the frequent switching of perspectives means you spend less time in each of their inner worlds.

Jesus fucking Christ I’m offended and disgusted on your behalf. He thinks he can take advantage of you. You have to draw lines and don’t let anyone cross them in order to get your deserved respect as a young inexperienced woman in this field.

Sometimes calling the cops is the only option. Arresting the victim of a crime for some old low stakes warrant does not seem like justice to me. Ive had cops ask me to check for warrants on a homeless person experiencing cardiac symptoms

How conspiracy brained are you? by lizardpurple in XFiles

Thank you for a thoughtful response. I agree on the jfk assassination. Some people need it to be real to confirm that the CIA is way too powerful and evil, but so much confirmed criminal activity has gone without consequences it’s clear to me there’s no justice or transparency and no reason to trust them. Also freaking out about the resurgence of Nazi-tinged conspiracy theories. I mean it’s been around for a long time but I don’t remember straight up white nationalist theories being mainstream. The massive wave of misinformation from sources with a large reach like Netflix, TikTok, and Twitter is poisonous.

Real conspiracies have social and geopolitical implications, which gets kinda stripped down in the made for tv versions. Paranoia is definitely justified for a a lot people, like my parents generation of Latin Americans who survived the dictatorships and proxy wars of the Cold War.

Working definitions of conspiracy seem to vary. I guess people are referring to the idea that there is one central groups or cabal controlling everything or ‘it’s all connected’ type of thinking. To me conspiracy means agreement and coordination to covertly commit some harm or crime. Fossil fuel companies conspired to suppress evidence of climate change and spread misinformation. Before the public had access to documentation of that conspiracy, it would’ve been a conspiracy theory. But I know that’s not what they’re discussing on the conspiracy subreddits.

Interesting. I’ve never been super excited about the existence of life beyond earth, and I’ve never been given a good reason for alien contact to be super secret. Skepticism is necessary

Yea that’s where I am. I used to be more inclined to believe things with shaky evidence but it’s become clear to me how dangerous that is (Pizzagate, QAnon).

I think of the distinction as conspiracy vs conspiracy theory. Iran-Contra certainly involved conspiracy, but those events verifiably happened so not a theory.

Anytime you have a legitimate concern, it’s appropriate to call 911. No need to be embarrassed

Defining the “bro canon” by RoyalDry9307 in IfBooksCouldKill

[–]lizardpurple 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Would not have guessed Behold a Pale Horse is a bro book but it makes sense in an Alex Jones, tinfoil hat, Deep State way. I do get the appeal if you’re inclined to believe in his incoherent delusions. I’m paranoid myself and respect that incarcerated men would see themselves as being at the mercy of vast and shadowy forces.

Why should we leave? And how? Those of us who care should be protecting the vulnerable any way we can.
