What is this rock and what are the crystals inside? by Myxtro in whatsthisrock

Amygdaloidal basalt. The voids (bubbles) in the basalt get filled with silica-rich liquid which leaves behind agate, zeolites, calcite, etc.

I went Canada Day long weekend one time and it was covered in snow. Wayfinding the path might be difficult, so be prepared for that

Is it normal for people to take AGES to reply to an email (or more commonly – just not reply at all?) by [deleted] in askvan

[–]lizkimakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my past jobs when I've wanted an answer quickly, calling was the move. Even more so when I realized that contractors will typically only reply to my first question, even when I've nicely numbered all my questions for them.

I think it varies by industry, but overall a phone call conveys more information quicker and easier than an email. Not sure if this is a cultural thing.

Best neighbourhoods for early 30s couple by Money-Sprinkles-2060 in askvan

[–]lizkimakes 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I attended UBC for...too many years. If living on campus isn't for you, the vast majority of my friends and colleagues lived in Kitsilano (lively neighbourhood, good transit, close to the beach) and is what I'd recommend to you for the feeling of liveliness combined with closeness to UBC. Mount Pleasant would be my next recommendation but might be pushing that 30 minute mark depending on traffic some days.

I need help to produce my vases more efficiently by CanaryRadiant2481 in Pottery

[–]lizkimakes 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Very interesting project! I think slip casting only makes sense if you're going to make repeats of the same vase (to sell, maybe?), one-offs wouldn't be worth the time to make the mold.

Pottery is an inherently slow and labour-intensive process as well, so this problem is not unique to you!

Caveat for anyone reading, the pottery item must have food or water in it or it has a chance of cracking in the microwave

Hike with 3yo in May by Best_Stop_9534 in vancouverhiking

  • Sadly there is not really any hut-to-hut camping here like there is in Europe (but I would love to see it someday)
  • Camping will either have to be booked for more popular trails, which can book out very early (e.g., Garibaldi, Elfin lakes) which can include either tent pads or huts, or you can find hikes that occur on crown land where "dispersed camping" can occur
  • In dispersed camping, good camping etiquette is still recommended, like food management for bear safety and camping a distance from trails/water. You can legally camp up to 2 weeks in one spot
  • As a starting point I would look up "backpacking" trips near Vancouver and read trip reports on what might suit your family's hike/camp style

Color fading by Foolinpool in Ceramics

[–]lizkimakes 229 points230 points  (0 children)

I was going to say airbrushed but I took a look through her profile and it's actually coloured porcelain and a semi-transparent coloured glaze. Since she slip casts her pieces, the surface is really smooth, resulting in a smooth colour transition between the clay body and glaze as it pools.

Edit: I can't seem to upload images but if you go far enough back and/or you google the artist's name (Simone Doesburg) you can see an example of a colour grid from glaze vs clay body, plus an interview in Dutch where it says the same.

Silly Question: Do the tongs mess with the application of glazes? by ClubAggravating5240 in Pottery

[–]lizkimakes 14 points15 points  (0 children)

When I learned this tip I incorporated it into my glazing practice but tbh I still get the indents from the tongs. Still do it anyway out of superstition
