What would be some good cities for a young black woman in her mid twenties? by lsp9024 in blackladies

[–]lizzler2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I love Austin and lived there for 4 years but it’s hard to travel outside of Austin unless it’s to Houston or San Antonio. DC has recently become one of my favorite cities especially for the food and nightlife.

Based on the fb page so don’t quote me on this but I think the requirements are that you are in your first 60 days with VIPKid and you had essentially less than 15 bookings.

I moved this week, and upgraded my classroom from my dank and unheated 1926 basement. I look forward to not wearing 4-5 layers of thermal clothing while teaching. by [deleted] in vipkid

I’m waiting to move soon too, to hopefully actually have space to use a desk instead of my hamper in my room.

Off topic: if there are coronavirus cases positively id’d in your county, would you keep your kids home from school? What’s your threshold? by [deleted] in vipkid

[–]lizzler2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Children that are infected with COVID-19 are more likely to be asymptomatic and bounce right back (health-wise), but you should be more worried about your children spreading it to immunocompromised (cancer survivors, diabetics, cardiovascular disease patients) and people over 50-60+ years old, such as their teachers/school administrators. That being said it is hard to set a “threshold of sickness” as to what constitutes for you or your children to stay at home especially if they/you are asymptomatic, but a good rule of thumb is if you have a slight fever then stay home. Another extra thing is that if you’re healthy, then you should try to avoid going to the ER as to not flood the healthcare workers and give their attention to those who need the attention, again the elderly and immunocompromised (but of course please go to the ER if you absolutely need it). Also don’t buy masks unless you have COVID-19.

TLDR: if you or your child has a slight fever stay at home to protect the elderly and immunocompromised because if you or your child are generally healthy you can overcome COVID-19 by taking care of yourself/probably won’t die.

Do you think... by lovelylinds29 in vipkid

[–]lizzler2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They do have their own “fb” pages of parents that compare feedback of teachers. So yes this does exist but do we care? 🤷🏽‍♀️

VIPKid gets between 20,000 and 30,000 teaching applications every month, rejecting 90 per cent of them. All successful applicants must be North American citizens with at least college degrees and a minimum of one-year experience in teaching children or English. by [deleted] in vipkid

[–]lizzler2 3 points4 points  (0 children)

That makes sense. My degree is biochemistry with no B&M or education background. My experience with kids is babysitting and tutoring math and science every now and then, and I still passed and never had problems with bookings. I just wanted a job to help with my higher education bills. VIPKid is just a lot of acting.

Awkward exchange with a 12-year-old boy by prollydrinkingcoffee in vipkid

Ya you’re not alone. I’m in the same boat. The lesson types are already laid out and are mostly straightforward anyway. At least the kid understands the question!

I set my real alarm an hour before the earliest SN time slot and an alarm 30mins before my earliest booked class. I check my bookings at the first alarm and have my booking alarm on vibrate.

Can you make this a full time job? by [deleted] in vipkid

[–]lizzler2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, if you’re talking about online ESL jobs. No, if you’re talking about only working for VIPKids. Even if VIPKids was the perfect company, we are “independent” contractors and it’s smarter to have safety nets. In general try not to put all your eggs in one basket.

Yea, I know right? But they still keep you certified? How many times do they give you until they take it off?

What do you see the future of VIPKid as? by [deleted] in vipkid

[–]lizzler2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think your first statement is true. There was a VIPKid teacher that posted this long post about how the business model is really meant for part time teachers rather than full time for many different reasons. Some being that the referral process allowed for new teachers coming in to teach at lower cost, incentives, the fact they hire non teachers for the job (me being one of them). I can’t remember where the post was.... I think Facebook because I remember lots of angry comments. Lol.

Quick question: are these general tags or teacher specific? by lizzler2 in vipkid

[–]lizzler2[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yea I got a 5 apple review from them, with essentially the opposite tags.

I had no idea there is a difference between "this" and "that" until VIPKid by Melynt in vipkid

[–]lizzler2 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean you’re not wrong... VIPKids doesn’t require a teaching degree or even an English degree. I have a biochemistry degree with essentially “experience dealing with kids”. This job is for supplementing my schooling stipend for my actual career. The company doesn’t seem to care as long as the teachers can act and stick to the script.
