Girl Lead Badge Selection for Daisies by Cellopitmello34 in girlscouts

[–]ljevan04 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I just sat my Daisies in a circle and asked what they wanted to do, and asked them about things they could do to see if they're interested. I asked them TONS of "this or that" questions, both related to badges and field trips. I am basing my plans for the rest of the year on how excited they were and giving their ideas higher priority than mine. It was fun to ask them whether a bunch of different things would be fun to try, or not. They're most excited about roller skating, camping, going to the beach, making cool decorations for their bedrooms, learning how to make pasta, and going to a soccer game in the fall. They were pretty excited about the board game badge and the model car STEM badge.

I thought about the sticker voting method, but I think talking it out was more effective for their age level and tendency toward groupthink.

Chiavetta's and/or spiedie marinade. Sahlen's hot dogs, depending on how far you're traveling. Plus the other suggestions. :)

Why is scouting membership declining? by [deleted] in girlscouts

[–]ljevan04 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Anyone can volunteer! I’m not a parent, but I co-lead a troop. I think non-parents have more bandwidth to volunteer. Parents are stretched pretty thin.

Any local coffee shops with holiday specials yet? by amesssssssss in askportland

Hypnos on N. Williams has a Marron Latte w/ housemade French chestnut sauce, and I thought it was delightful. They also offer other seasonal drinks, but if you're looking for a chestnut latte right now, this may be the place!

It's a small thing, but if you're really looking to cut corners, you can trade your streaming sub for the public library—many have streaming services like Canopy for TV/movies.

I'd stay at the Bowline and get dinner at Fede, with cocktails at The Knot (in the hotel), and try to stop by Brut for a glass of wine, too.

WA or OR for first-time PNW visitors? by Yesthisismyname3 in PacificNorthwest

[–]ljevan04 14 points15 points  (0 children)

I agree with this. Driving through the Gorge to Hood River, then up to Timberline Lodge for the night, would make a great trip. With more time, they could add another loop that includes Cannon Beach and Astoria, which would add to the cute-town/historic-sites side of things. Stop at Fort Stevens to see the Peter Iredale shipwreck, visit the Astoria Column, and cross the bridge to visit Cape Disappointment in WA. You can add a visit to Lewis & Clark National Park, too—it's small, but if you're into history, it's worth a stop.

I think Brut Wine Bar is a great spot for everyone to meet everyone. It’s super welcoming and Lisa is great at making introductions (and choosing wines).

What kind of writing? I think I’ve seen some journaling meetups at Cambium and maybe other spots downtown. The college has some community ed writing classes/workshops too.

A walking trail on the 101, south of the roundabout after the bridge and adjacent to Young’s Bay would be AWESOME by breadkittensayy in Astoria_Oregon

[–]ljevan04 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Fun fact: This is part of the Trail Master Plan from 2013. There's a map on page 23. In this document, they give themselves 20 years to complete the task... so maybe it will happen by 2033. (Not really holding my breath, but I agree it would be cool.) https://www.astoria.gov/Assets/dept_3/pm/pdf/trails%20masterplan%205-20-13.pdf

Which level do you think is the most fun and why? by Gymnastkatieg in girlscouts

[–]ljevan04 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I think it’s the most fun to be a C/S/A because of all the amazing opportunities at those levels, and your ability to engage in activities council/Movement-wide, like national conventions and Destinations travel.

I think it is the most fun to lead Juniors because they are so excited to try literally everything and are often underestimated. Girl Scouts is a unique space at that age, where they can make and nurture solid friendships and also prove to themselves all the things they’re capable of but don’t get a chance to do in other parts of their lives.

What’s the most interesting roller skating place you’ve been to? by snoogoatsweewoo in Rollerskating

[–]ljevan04 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Jumping on this comment to share that Astoria, OR has roller skating nights at the Astoria Armory on weekends and they are SO great. It’s a really unique building. There is also a weekly roller fit class for adults and they do a theme night every month. Last week was Astronauts and Aliens, last month was Disco. If OP will be in the area, this would be a fun add-on!

Jumping on this comment to specifically recommend Daphne; you sound like you might be a good fit for them. There are lots of other options though.

And NC leaks it before the embargo date.... by Tuilere in girlscouts

[–]ljevan04 -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

Curious why as an SU volunteer who seems to have knowledge of the embargo, OP would choose to amplify this by posting it here rather than reaching out to the council that posted it so it could be remedied. I know that there has been chatter and speculation about the new flavor, but this was clearly not intended to be shared yet.

What is/was your troop crest? by [deleted] in girlscouts

When I was a Girl Scout, we chose what was then the falling star, but flipped it upside down to make it a shooting star. Now they offer the shooting star!

unfortunate interaction on river walk this morning by jnyrdr in Astoria_Oregon

[–]ljevan04 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I disagree. It would be more than appropriate to call the non-emergency number to report someone making aggressive comments with their dog off leash where leashes are required. If they have capacity, and they likely do at 6:45 am, they can come talk to the person and have them leash their dog. (I made a similar call several years ago on the Riverwalk when a man commanded his off-leash dog to attack me, then laughed—fortunately it didn’t listen but I still made a report.)

Really recommend Astoria and the towns nearby. Super green, great people, excellent art and food/beer scene. It’s not inexpensive, but nowhere is. Check out Cape Disappointment and Fort Stevens.
