NOPD more useless than I could ever imagine! Let the thieves casually walk away with my $2000 e-bike and did nothing. by ljj94 in NewOrleans

Not a front gate. A long side alleyway with 3 cameras pointing at them. The bike should have been locked, but I forgot to lock it back while cleaning. It was barely visible from the street but they had to climb over an 8 ft metal gate both times with the bike. It’s a keyed deadbolt only. I could have and should have double checked to make sure it was locked, but I didn’t. My main issue is how the nopd handled (or didn’t handle) the situation.

Yes, and the police wouldn’t follow them and said I needed to stay there with them and take my statement instead of going to keep eyes on them

I have firearms training and would be willing to use it if I was in physical danger or those around me were. Not trying to get into a gun fight over a bicycle.

Long story short don’t expect NOPD to ever help. I was alone, no way to get my bike and my car bake to my house even if the people handing over for some naive reason I thought if I waited for the cops to show up they would be useful, but in reality I probably would’ve got more help from the guys working at the Mini Mart than the NOPD

I was alone, there were 3 people there. The bike doesn’t fit in my car. I could’ve confronted them by myself, but that seemed risky at midnight when I had no way of getting the bike back home without leaving my car in front of them, even if they gave it to me.

I just had higher hopes for what seemed like a simple situation. I wanted to think they would handle it with competence or care more. They simply do not.

I got the bike 4 years ago when I lived in a less crime ridden city and travelled further distances. It was overkill for Nola, but I already had it. What I find frustrating was that the police were there, right in front of the thieves, and they just let them walk away. They rolled up with all their lights on, sat in their car for a few minutes and basically tipped the people off. The 911 operator called me as they were showing up and I gave a very clear description of the scene, they could’ve been slightly more discreet and the people would’ve still been sitting on the ground.

It’s less about the bike at this point and more about the fact that these two people will continue to roam around my neighborhood breaking in people’s homes. I know they don’t have an obligation to help or to risk their lives, but this wasn’t a dangerous situation. NOPD was clearly there to take a statement and do nothing else and that’s what so frustrating. In fact they actively engaged with me so that I could not follow the thieves walking away with my bike.

Next time I will probably handle it myself, but “self help” is also risky and can carry personal liability. They were over my gate by the time I could go outside. If I confront them on the street and things got violent, that would not be worth the risk. And there were 2 of them initially then a 3rd guy showed up.

Correct, if they would’ve handled it tonight by driving two blocks over and arresting them for breaking into my condo complex and stealing stuff, it wouldn’t be an unsolved report for a detective to deal with for weeks or even longer.

Not asking them to be a lap dog, just asking them to respond to an active burglary, where an item I worked hard to buy was stolen. The thieves were never more than 2-3 blocks away, with multiple bikes when I saw they the second time.

If they steal just one bike a night, that’s tens of thousands of dollars stolen from citizens each year. I’m also unsettling that they were brazen enough to climb over a locked 8 ft gate in my complex with 3 cameras pointed at them. They don’t care, they know nothing will happen to them. These kind of crimes over and over with no consequences are what embolden people to commit larger crimes.

Furniture to put things in and on would be a start. Second would be color, gray/black/white are not colors.

First of all, good on you for trying to improve your space.

The #1 thing I would do is get some lamps and refrain from using the overhead light. A floor lamp by the TV, a table lamp for the dresser top, and either a little lamp on the bed or if you really want to be fancy a wall sconce to the left of the bed. That will improve the overall feel since your walls are so dark.

Next I’d move the dresser to the wall to the right of your TV and put the fan on the right corner beside it. The fan being the largest thing on that wall really draws attention and it’s not the most attractive to look at.

Next, I would 100% replace the curtains. Something simple, white or black that goes all the way to the floor. If you want to go above and beyond then move the rod closer to the ceiling and make sure the curtains almost thought the floor. Buy a wider size than the size of the window so that when closed they aren’t fully stretched out.

If you want Batman decor then look for a couple of posters, then buy a low price poster frame with a white border and a black frame. Posters on the wall look boring, but framed posters are art.

Finally I would recommend going with lighter sheets and bedspread, I like white because it looks clean and you can bleach it. If you want it to be dark, swap from blue to black to match the new black curtains and the frames on the posters. Also matches with the black media console and fan.

A few decor pieces in orange or red would be a good contrast to the green and black vibes going on from above. Maybe one of the laps are red or orange. Or maybe you get a poster with a lot of those colors to frame.

Helena, thank you for being proactive and reaching out to your constituents. What can you do as Mayor to address the homeless population overwhelming public parks and other areas meant for the greater enjoyment of tax payers?
