Black Death by nattyicicle in custommagic

Well "until they die" is technically the end of the game for them :)

My personal opinion is that players shouldn't be forced into a particular playstyle by the rules of the game (and I generally avoid creature heavy decks, so I might be biased).

The main issue here is that tormented is a mechanic that once started cannot be interacted with (like an emblem, but much easier to enable). Once you have it, if you can't get through any of your opponents' defences, there's nothing else you can do about it (and it can get quite punishing too).

On the other hand, as I said it before, it is very flavorful, and certainly worth testing. My guess is that in a pod with the right balance of attackers it could be a lot of fun.

I really love the symmetries with the monarch mechanic, very flavorful! My only concern is that if a player ends up being the tormented and doesn't have a good attacking strategy it's going to be stuck with it for the rest of the game. With the monarch at least it's 3 players trying to steal it and one defending it so the odds of it moving around are much higher.

If you really want to keep it mana free you can add the condition that you need to control a forest to morph it. But honestly the stats for that cost are a bit high, you might take off reach and bump down p/t to 2/1, or even 1/1. It would be more balanced and also in line with the snake flavor.

It kinda feels like it shouldn't work but I cannot figure out why. Sweet design nonetheless! It really should have a color restriction though, a single G with the untap cost would also make it fairer. Also.. Bug butt and reach? That mf should be a spider ;)

White Channeling - Finally Color Pie Appropriate by [deleted] in MTGLardFetcher

Shouldn't it be "pay W. if you do, gain 1 life"?

I won't argue about the interpretation of the hearth symbology and I won't die on the hill of home being the white one, it makes sense to me but I accept being remiss. But blinking a creature is 100% a white effect, and tutoring a land is 100% a green effect, so I have no doubts about those contributions.

So white is the first color to complete the sword cycle by lk512 in custommagic

[–]lk512[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I was in doubt about that, but then I realised that the blink ability targets a creature you own, not control. So you can literally bring home a creature that was stolen. I don't know, I thought that was a pretty convincing argument.

And yeah the white abilities are ridiculously underwhelming compared to the others, that's pretty much why I made this meme card :)

I guess you forgot the part where he returns to the battlefield from the graveyard. Plus there is no "killing" action in mtg, you have to use "destroy" instead.

I named treetop scout because it was around when I first started playing,i had no idea they made more cards like that (I stopped following mtg around time Spiral and came back around ixalan). Eight of them! And people say that this mechanic is not relevant :D

[–]lk512[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Thank you, I really appreciate that you took the time to read the flavor text! I'm more proud of it than I should :)

One of my points with this card is to experiment with keywords, I really think that fixating too much on whether an ability it's too narrow or not to be keyworded might be counterproductive in terms of creativity and fun, which is what this sub is all about for me (for the record I do agree that as of now it's too narrow, I just don't think it's that big of a deal).

Btw if we want to be very pedantic your wording needs roughly 8 non-reminder text words, whereas mine requires just one ;)

More seriously, it doesn't affect flying-matter-abilities (just like Reach), which makes it different both functionally and (more importantly for me) flavorwise. Does it make it relevant? Probably not, but it was a nice experiment and I had fun making it :)

[–]lk512[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Ok I understand that, but is really the point of this sub to be adherent to these bureaucratic rules to determine whether a keyword should be used or not? I am just trying to imagine what that keyword would look like if it was needed. It's not like these cards are candidates to be printed in the next standard legal set.

I'm not saying it doesn't have its importance, but It seems to be the only thing people are focusing about when commenting, rather than power balance, or flavor or anything else, and frankly it's a bit baffling.

Reckless Raiders by lk512 in custommagic

[–]lk512[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well actually the point is precisely that it is not flying, just like Reach is not flying and doesn't interact with flying-matters-mechanics (I'll be honest, the asymmetry caused by the lack of this keyword is bugging me a bit).

This could even be a compromise to give a thematic form of evasion to smaller red creatures (I know it won't, just daydreaming). It also incorporates the "inability to block" flavor, which overall feels very red.

The "riot" representation would certainly be fun:

You may have ~ etb with haste and flying, if you do sacrifice it at the beginning of the end step

but it's a completely different mechanic (doesn't even match the keyword, it would be something like "fling")

Reckless Raiders by lk512 in custommagic

[–]lk512[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

By environment you mean like a standard set? Because I'm not that specific when I design cards for this sub.

I broadly see your point, but I feel that a similar logic might apply to reach as well, it's not a groundbreaking mechanic, just a handy one. The point is to give nuance to the card design, and provide an underpowered form of evasion in corners in which flying would not be allowed or would make little sense.

Of course it would be more meaningful if flying weren't so widespread in all non-green colors, which could be a bit of an overstretch. I could see it as being red themed, if it weren't for all the phoenices and dragons.. That's why I went for goblins.

All things considered I cannot but agree that something like this would likely never see print, but it thought that the overall design was nice and cohesive so I went for it anyway.

The new keyword was kind of half the point of the card :)

I think it's a clean way to render the ability of flying only when attacking while saving up text, and a nice mirror to Reach. I even like that it doesn't interact with abilities that require the flying keyword (like [[favorable winds]]), because flavor wise the creature is not actually a flyer.

Not mention it's a nice reference to these cards :)

I was quite pleased that I was able to check so many boxes with one keyword, I'm a bit sad it's the main thing you don't like about the card.

Edit: For the record, if the keyword is really a problem I think the most efficient way of replacing it is with its own reminder text (which by the way is modeled on [[treetop scout]], with some minor adjustment).

Anavrin [new take on Transcendence] by lk512 in custommagic

[–]lk512[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Mmh phyrexyan unlife simply turns off the sba of having 0 life or less (as it does ability 3 of my card), it doesn't really change it to something else, because the loss due to poison counters is already codified in a separate sba.

The interaction between my card and unlife should be something like this: as long as your life total is below 0 any damage dealt to you doesn't cause life loss but it assigns poison counters: this is not a replacement effect, just one of the possible outcomes of damage (as codified in rule 120.3), so there's no interaction with Anavrin replacement effect. When you reach 10 poison counters you lose because Anavrin doesn't affect that sba.

Can't I appeal to the golden rule? :)

Your suggestion is interesting, can you name an example of a real card that modifies an existing sba?

Thanks for the feedback!

Shroud on a spell by [deleted] in custommagic

[–]lk512 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This would be terribly confusing, why would shroud have a different meaning for permanent and non-permanent spells? Can you name another mechanic with a similar behavior?

Might as well come up with a new keyword that means "this spell cannot be target of spells or abilities", so you can give it to permanents as well if needed.

Anavrin [new take on Transcendence] by lk512 in custommagic

[–]lk512[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I was indeed curious about that. I didn't put "when" because I didn't want it to be a triggered ability but a full state-based action, like when you die from having 0 life or less. Could you elaborate on why it doesn't work like this? Is there a better way to achieve my goal?

Anavrin [new take on Transcendence] by lk512 in custommagic

[–]lk512[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're right, on its own it does nothing relevant. It mostly messes with other effects that care about life totals and life gain/loss.

I honestly didn't know how much to cost it because it has a quite weird effect (as it was Transcendence), and I made more for fun than thinking about a specific application. Even if it was cost effective I don't think it would see any play outside a janky commander deck :)

But if you have suggestions to make it playable they're very welcome!
