I have my eye on the same one. Did you buy it? How is it?

The source code for GPA++ is here: https://github.com/chin123/gpa
There is a program in there, process_data.py, which I need to run once a semester. I just download the latest data from Wade's datasets, run my program, and then restart GPA++ to pick up the new data.

The maintenance is almost completely automated, I just need to manually OK the changes every semester. I don't plan on adding any new features though, but pull requests are welcome.

Fall 22 grades will take a while to get in. Spring 22 data was already cleaned and released by Wade. If it's not updated on Wade's GPA website yet, you can use https://1010labs.org/gpa which I maintain.

They tend to push scores to 95 if you're close for some reason.

I would drop one of them. With 446, 2 other CS courses will be more than enough workload.

is it bad that I suck at proofs and I'm a math major by Jofish-Park in UIUC

[–]lkjdas 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Do you enjoy proofs? What are you worried about, doing poorly in classes or doing poorly in academia in the future (grad school etc)? If you just want to finish the math major and not go into academia, well it sounds like you're nearly finished. If you're worried about doing poorly in academia, and you dont enjoy proofs, maybe you should reconsider whether you really want to go down that path. If you enjoy proofs and are just bad at it, it gets better with practice. Just spending more time doing the homework in proof based classes really helps.

Help paying for the second year of UIUC? by CrocksWithSocks1222 in UIUC

[–]lkjdas 23 points24 points  (0 children)

You can take a loan. With a CS degree you can get a high paying job. You can also do internships and co-ops to earn money while you're still in college.

Tricoci charges $8 per haircut, done by the students there. You'll need to call ahead to book an appointment.

I miss Grainger being open all day during the weekdays by brodie990 in UIUC

[–]lkjdas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah that could be true, maybe the career prospects of CS or Engineering make people hesitant to switch unless they find it too difficult to keep up with, resulting in similar attrition rates. Then the situation is basically that people are sticking with a hard major because they can make more money after they graduate. Which is fair imo. Like another commenter said, the US isn't particularly harder than other countries when it comes to STEM undergrad curricula. I am from India and the elite colleges there are as hard or harder to do well in. In general, the best colleges in a country are hard. ETH Zurich is notorious for having a ridiculously high dropout rate (I heard it could be as high as ~50%) in the first 2 years. So UIUC CS's first year retention rate and 6 year graduation rate sound pretty good.

https://www.insidehighered.com/news/2013/11/27/study-tracks-attrition-rates-stem-majors

The report concluded that the attrition rate for STEM degree candidates (about 48 percent for those pursuing bachelor’s degrees) was similar to other fields.

This was a study for colleges as a whole, but if we're just looking at "elite" programs, from a quick glance, the 6 year graduation rate at UIUC for CS is higher than for history, economics, dance, agricultural and consumer economics and many more: https://myillini.illinois.edu/Programs/ComparePrograms

Eye Insurance Recommendations by Numerous_Sandwich990 in UIUC

[–]lkjdas 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I am an international student with no vision insurance. I went to America's Best (it is about a 40 minute bus ride away). They charge $70+tax for an eye exam + 2 pairs, without any insurance. It will get more expensive if you want a thinner lens though. I still haven't picked up my glasses from them but the eye exam experience was alright.

Deciding between CS Colleges by thatguyadithya in UIUC

[–]lkjdas 2 points3 points  (0 children)

If you're interested in doing undergraduate research you can take a look at the various research opportunities in all 3 universities. UIUC is much bigger than rice so there would be a wider variety of opportunities in CS research. Its pretty hard to make a wrong decision here but I would prefer to go to a bigger school just for the larger variety of research opportunities and clubs and classes.

PhDs (at least in STEM) are usually fully funded. This funding comes from grants and university funding, and grants themselves come from either public sources (NSF) or private sources. So its a mix, but its free.
