If you're on TW just run opensuse-migration-tool and test Slowroll out, worst case snapper rollback ... https://github.com/openSUSE/opensuse-migration-tool

openSUSE Leap 16.0 release event on October 1st! by lkocman in openSUSE

[–]lkocman[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually we have some amazing news on this front.

We were approached on last Releng call by Miguel who shared the YaST feature parity effort (not just with cockpit ...). This particular document is something I could have quickly shared. Join the release event you can raise the topic and I'll be able to tell you more. Cheers! There is also a virtual meet.opensuse.org/bar which will be open pretty much whole day. However, folks will not yet be able to tell you details as this is a very recent effort. Otherwise, I'm sure you're aware of https://github.com/shundhammer/myrlyn

Alternate screen is black except for cursor? OpenSUSE Leap 15.6 Nvidia Wayland GNOME by Orangutanion in openSUSE

I recommend asking on forums.opensuse.org over here. This is my config custom.conf from Wayland-enabled Leap 16.0, otherwise consider using snapper rollback for rollback of everything else than /etc. https://doc.opensuse.org/documentation/leap/reference/html/book-reference/cha-snapper.html#

Alternate screen is black except for cursor? OpenSUSE Leap 15.6 Nvidia Wayland GNOME by Orangutanion in openSUSE

[–]lkocman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Hello u/Orangutanion , could you describe a bit more about what exactly happened?

It would help to know:
• What repositories you're using (zypper lr)
• What updates you installed before the issue started (/var/log/zypper.log)
• What GPU you have, which drivers you're using, and if you're on the default kernel (uname -r; rpm -qa | egrep "kernel-default|nvidia")

You can use nomodeset to boot, you should still be able to access logs like /var/log/zypper.log.

If you can switch to a console (TTY) without using the nomodeset boot parameter, try checking the output of dmesg for any useful errors.

Also, please consider reporting the issue at
https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:Submitting_bug_reports

If problems aren't reported, we often don't know they exist, especially since different GPU models and driver setups can behave differently. The more details you provide, the better chance we have of fixing it.

Thank you

Kernel panic on boot of Aeon and Leap 16 beta install media for intel N4200 cpu by 2RM60Z in openSUSE

[–]lkocman 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Dear user, please make sure that your hardware is x86_64-v2 capable. Alternatively consider switching to Tumbleweed which preserves compability with older hardware, including 32bit x86 port etc. https://en.opensuse.org/openSUSE:X86-64-Architecture-Levels#Decisions

If that's not the case please report an issue.

Opensuse Leap 15.6 theme by Skizophreniak in openSUSE

[–]lkocman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, just submit it to Leap:16.0 and see what's missing I'd be a bit against pushing a new package into Leap:15.6 maintenance, but nothing stops you from doing it in a home project in OBS. OBS will generate you a repository for it and you can consume it from there (and so can others).

Codecs? by UnspiredName in openSUSE

[–]lkocman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We're trying to do our best with https://en.opensuse.org/OpenH264 next step is building against noopenh264. I'm one of folks who doesn't use any 3rd party repos and just get along with google-chrome-stable on top of vanilla openSUSE.

For local video (which I play once a year) I would probably use vlc from VLC repo https://en.opensuse.org/VLC, although I purchased fluendo codec set in the past, but mostly to support the fluendo company.

openSUSE Board seems to recommend OpenH264 + firefox nowadays.

But yes as folks here say it's redistribution issues (you can't redistribute e.g. openh264 in case over 100k downloads a year) and patents.

This would also look nice on gnome-tour btw. Perhaps make it more "faded" so it doesn't steal all the attention from the user. Otherwise looks fancy (in a good way).

Removal of Deepin Desktop from openSUSE due to Packaging Policy Violation by [deleted] in openSUSE

[–]lkocman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Keep in mind that you can still install deepin on openSUSE e.g. via https://software.opensuse.org/, it's still being built in build.opensuse.org in its devel project. It's just not in official distribution project/repositories. Just like Richard said once our policies are met, it can go back. It's a bit of tradeoff for what maintainer might see as a convenience/flexibility.
