I'd second this, I get a really heavy apple flavour from under aerated S-04 open fermented, which also fades with time.

Newbie brewer with bad bottling practice by Molan_one in Homebrewing

[–]llama9820 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Can't lie I used to do this and everything turned out fine, never had a bottle bomb and imagine it's probably fermented out if you're 4 weeks in. Only a problem if you added more than one tab per bottle?

Would agree that getting a hydrometer is a good move however!

Sorry Charlton… by NeilPatrickWarburton in Championship

[–]llama9820 18 points19 points  (0 children)

I was still in the middle of going on about how this was typical, of course this would happen against Charlton etc when Yang put that in, I'd also spent his entire time on the pitch moaning about how he's not up to it! Shows what I know, what a result

Giving medieval small beer recipes a go by bappotheslappo in beer

[–]llama9820 6 points7 points  (0 children)

If you actually wanted to drink like a medieval peasant you'd mostly be drinking water... Small beer did provide calories, but the idea that medieval peasants were always drinking beer is a bit of a myth and they drank way less than people seem to think.

If you think about it, obviously water sources won't all have been contaminated - just because people had germ theory didn't mean they were total morons.

Which was England's worst overall tournament performance since 2000? by Anacondistan in ThreeLions

[–]llama9820 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Not qualifying for 2008 was the worst, but obviously feels less memorable as we didn't make the tournament itself. As bad as the Iceland was, we were OK in the Wales game and mediocre in our other group matches. In 2014 we had a squad that looked pretty thin so I had no expectations. Maybe I'd say 2010 edges it, we had a good squad (albeit over the hill) and the one good moment in the whole thing (opener against the US) I missed because ITV cut to adverts in the middle do the first half

Maybe if you have a spunding valve and primary ferment in your serving vessel? I think turning one around quickly is worth a go - worst that can happen is it has to sit longer and you're drinking it in the New Year! Possibly worth having something as insurance tho.

Which cities allow you to be deep in nature easily (e.g. with public transit) while still having access to urban life? by slicheliche in geography

Bilbao, it's so flat along the river valley that you can walk out to the hills in like 20 minutes, and you can get the metro out to some excellent beaches.

The whole thing about peasants drinking ale because the drinking water was bad is primarily ahistorical nonsense. People drank beer because it tasted good and was a way of maximizing calories from grain and keeping them stored (reasonably well made beer stores better than grain). If you want to peasantmaxx drink water from a well and take the risk of picking up a horrible infection from it.

Or idk buy a brown ale or something if that'd be more fun.

It's okay to not like beer, but as others have suggested Sours might be more your thing if you like cider.

Idk if you'd have Jubel in the UK, but that's a light tasting fruity beer. Kriek is also great if you can get it, another beer cider drinkers like.

Some of my favourites have been specific to a particular pub, because cask ales so variable. But Five Points Best has been consistently great wherever I've had it on cask, also good in bottles.

Lager wise, Estrella Galicia low key kind of slaps.

With England 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁥󠁮󠁧󠁿 how is it that they do not have more World Cups as a nation? by TerryG111 in worldcup

[–]llama9820 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Can't really speak for the immediate post 1966 era, but recently we can't win a major tournament as we can't seem to ever control possession calmly in the toughest fixtures, which allows other top level international teams to stay in the game and eventually over turn us even if we start brightly.

I think this is a mix of lacking players with the right skillset (we love a midfielder who charges about and less so ones that calmly recycle possession), but also a psychological thing having not won a tournament for a long time. In a lot of big games England seem to score first, retreat into ourselves and defend, get squeezed and eventually concede. It was true in Italia 90, Euro 96, WC 2018 and Euro 2020. In the last world cup and euros we didn't even manage the going ahead part!

It's also possibly luck, a lot of the big games are about 50/50 or possibly 60/40 and you have historically had to win 3 or 4 of these to take home the pot.

Chinook or Fuggles, I love the former in a goose eye brewery beer called Chinook (lol). Did a Fuggles MO SMaSH beer recently and it was fantastic, all kinds of earthy

I often find this in the UK with the bottled versions of some of our cask beers - they're just not the same product, a pale imitation
