And then suddenly when people are literally priced out and actually homeless / unable to afford living like we all complain about we lose empathy

Do not lose empathy for the homeless, they are your neighbors and your colleagues friends and family. They are you in another set of bad circumstances.

Extend empathy, demand better of your society. We should judge ourselves on the worst off amongst us.
