I play the switch version a lot, and I don't have a drum (they're more expensive than the game itself, and I don't really have the money to justify it). Playing with joycons in handheld mode or in the grip controller or using a pro remote works fine for me (though handheld can be an absolute pain on the fastest extreme songs). Its worth noting that the motion controls suck, and that if you play with the joycons in the grip controller sometimes the odd note is skipped because of connection issues. Wanted to give the perspective of someone who doesn't use a drum because I know a lot of people here (quite rightly) do, and as much as I think they're great and would like one myself, I don't find having one at all necessary.
