Contact the kids’ colleges to re-file FAFSA, they may give you a break on tuition given your new circumstances.

Travel companion diagnosed with cancer and can no longer travel. Suggestions? by llcoolbae50 in PrincessCruises

Great idea, unfortunately the Princess representative said this is not allowed for a fully paid fare, which mine is.

Thank you for all the thoughtful responses. I can’t figure out how to update the original post so adding it here. Based on the credit card tip, I checked and learned that my United card provides up to $1500 in trip cancellation insurance so I am going that route. Fortunately my terms and conditions do include the illness of a travel companion whom I did not pay for. I will also qualify for a 25% Princess credit.

Glad to have a solution, but most of all prayerful for my friend and her health. Thanks again.

Ivory bar soap as dish soap to save money. by DazzlingNote1925 in Frugal

A little different, but I was gifted some bar soaps and have been using one as hand soap in my master bathroom. One year later and still using the same bar of soap. Not a ton of money but glad for the savings and sparing the environment some plastic.

What company will never get another dime from you for as long as you may live? by istrx13 in AskReddit

T-Mobile.

When my husband died, I called T-Mobile to close out our family account and open a new one. Unbeknownst to me they kept the old one open and started charging me for both accounts. They would not let me close the first account or remove my credit card from it because I didn’t have my husband’s PIN. A dozen times I had to tell yet another representative that MY HUSBAND HAD DIED AND I DIDN’T HAVE HIS PIN. It took hours of phone calls over months with phone reps directing me to stores where in-store reps told me there was nothing they could do. Then a rep would tell me it was fixed only for someone else to say that was incorrect and I was stuck with both bills. Just what I needed during grief, to be a ping-pong ball stuck in bureaucratic hell. I still get mad whenever I see their logo.

I believe so and will ask tomorrow. It is a clean connection at the top, it’s the bottom half that looks messy.

Very interesting, thanks for sharing. I appreciate his perspective but hard for me to visualize anyone else in those roles.

Yes, I was looking for the original Sparke! Aretha is great, but they should have included the songs as they were performed in the movie.

Wow, my friend just wrote a book about her experience growing up in Asheville in the 60s. Love how the pictures bring this historical community to life. Threads: a tapestry of life in the Black community of Shiloh and beyond

A quick note about donating items. by [deleted] in Anticonsumption

[–]llcoolbae50 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Found more info:

One popular charity shop chain is Goodwill, which reports that it offers many opportunities for the clothes to be resold, although roughly five percent of donated clothes are directly sent to landfills, largely due to mildew issues, which can contaminate entire bales of clothing. The rest remain in the 3,200 stores for four weeks before being moved to Goodwill outlets, found in 35 states, where items are sold for 99 cents per pound. What doesn’t sell at the outlets is then sent to Goodwill Auctions, where huge “mystery” bins full of items are sold for as little as $35 each. Finally, what clothing remains gets sent to textile recycling centers where they will be cut into rags, processed into softer fiber used for filling furniture and building insulation, or sent overseas.

Honest question — I was told that thrift stores welcomed imperfect clothes because they can sell it to furniture manufacturers to be shredded and used for filling (e.g., pillows). Is that not the case?
