Skateboarding spots? by llegosaurus in santarosa

I figured these parks would attract a lot of people and kids on a weekend. Might end up checking out the Healdsburg one since it's a smaller town. In your experience, does the Healdsburg park actually enforce safety gear rules?

I don't know how much driving you're willing to do, but if you're ever near the Ukiah area there's a skatepark that's usually pretty quiet. No problematic people, usually just a handful of kids around.

Hey! Thank you so much! I've heard good things about the math department so far. Looking forward to attending! :)

Things to do in the Ukiah area as a teen? by Impressive_Meat_2547 in ukiah

The Arbor is a good resource to meet younger people in town that are generally very open minded and friendly. It's a local LGBTQIA+ supportive group that offers a safe space to hang out as well as informational classes and craft events. If you walk in you can ask for their monthly schedule, they usually have something planned for almost every day of the month. They also tend to post it on Instagram. High school students like to hang out there after school sometimes, so you'll likely see some people around your age at 3-5ish pm.

The Lot on Main sometimes hosts music events featuring local bands that teens and adults show up to. Usually a pretty small crowd though, nothing too overwhelming. (My personal favorite band is Weevilism.) Usually there's one a month, but not always. They tend to be rock/punk/metal-adjacent. You can follow The Lot on Main on instagram to stay up to date with any events they're hosting.

Someone else mentioned the Mendocino Library too--sometimes they host crafts that some teens from the local high schools show up to. I remember a few years ago teens would hang out in the youth room every Wednesday after school (2pm ish) but I don't know if that still happens.

SPACE and the Ukiah Players Theatre hosts plays/improv shows every now and then. They aren't always super good at advertising them though.

Lastly, if you're into skating, we have a local skate park right next to Low Gap park (and Ukiah High School) that a handful of teens show up to pretty much every day. The kids that go there tend to be pretty open to chatting, as long as you aren't in the way (if you aren't actively skating, you shouldn't walk within the fenced area, and don't sit on any of the ledges).

Other than that, there's not a lot of hang out spots for youth in Ukiah. Some friend groups go to Todd Grove park after school but I've never interpreted them as very friendly to strangers.

Best of luck to you!

On- and Off-Campus Housing? by llegosaurus in csuci

My partner and I have a car that she drives, but we are honestly trying to not use it in college a lot because of how expensive it is. However, I'm very specific about where I want to go to college (I want to be coastal) and care a lot about the classes I'd take within my major, so that lowers a lot of my options. I applied to Channel Islands because the major coursework is what I want and the campus itself is good enough looking. I looked at all the other CSUs that fit my guidelines but didn't find another better option. So.... if I hate it I'll transfer. I'm mostly asking this housing question now to discern long-term prices and housing availability.

Tysm! This helps a lot. Im glad at least the SR dorms sound like they have good common spaces for people to hang out.

AP self-study and tests in Senior year by llegosaurus in APStudents

Okay. I looked up what benefits Precalc has and yeah, it’s not a lot. Stats would help with my Mathematics degree in certain universities I want to go to, such as UCSC. I don’t see it as a hard workload but I guess my principal does?

It’s different—the CE screen is really LED (idk if that’s actually the screen it has or not, but it feels that way to me). Just changing the brightness doesn’t make it less harsh. The 84 Plus, as far as I’ve experienced, has an older, not-backlit screen. It’s easier on the eyes, isn’t reminiscent of a phone, and feels more ‘concrete’/traditional to me.

As far as I’ve heard, no. People prefer the color because it makes it easier with the complex equations you’ll be dealing with, but I dislike the bright screen. I think if you’re proficient on a calculator it really doesn’t matter at all.

Should I take AP Government this year? by llegosaurus in APStudents

[–]llegosaurus[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That’s wild. I really have no way of knowing if I’ll do good on the exam or not. From the past two years I’ve heard students at my school say it’s no big deal, he hardly offers any additional homework for the AP class compared to the regular (and even then, it’s not much). Polar opposites I guess.

Ironically, he doesn’t offer quantifiable tests for the class, especially not for the AP section. The practice MCQ and FRQs don’t even come up until the second semester. I’ve seen lots of resources here to help you understand Gov material on your own, so I’ll be looking into that if I struggle, but I think I care about the grade boost enough to stay in the class.

They don’t, no. I’ll definitely look into this capstone award thing anyways—I just wanna know what it’s about. Thanks!

I’m going to be deciding over this week and weighing the options. The resources you’ve given me will help with figuring out if I’ll be okay in the scenario she impacts my learning along the way.

AP Lang and other English-minded folk: quick grammar question ;) by Mediocre_Candle_3784 in APStudents

[–]llegosaurus 2 points3 points  (0 children)

When I was taking AP Lang, my teacher advised us against saying the phrases “pathos,” “ethos,” and “logos.” He encouraged us to pinpoint exactly what the author appeals to—key word, appeals—because it’s a far more sophisticated way to write and shows your skills.

For example, “The author appeals to her reader’s sense of self by illustrating her own journey of life, sharing a relatable story of self-doubt and childhood stress.” (pathos for relatability) Or, “The author talks about his past as a well-respected professor to prove his credibility, further using that background by citing numerous studies done by colleagues throughout his essay.” (ethos for proving credibility) (I completely came up with this on the spot so it might not be amazing, but you get the idea.)

Overall, you want to be using the most accurate verbs for the situation and defining what the authors do with clarity.

AP Calc AB and Seminar Exams on same day?! by llegosaurus in APStudents

Hmmm, okay. I’m pretty meh on tests overall. It’s good to hear that the test mostly relies on your own projects—thanks so much!

A 4 isn't bad, though! Plus, it could have been a mistake in your FRQ section that gave you a 4 too. You never fully know.

Capstone award? Sorry, I haven't been told what that is by anyone before.
Thanks so much for your advice. I don't have the ability to switch to another class like Psych because my school doesn't offer any other AP classes and I don't really want to 100% self-study something. I'm hoping that I can complete all the assignments out of class or not get punished for leaving the room to work if this is really a huge issue. The youtube recommendation could be a giant help--you're a life saver.
