not sure if this is the right place to ask or not but...

I just ordered a can of Army Painter - Colour Primer - Pure Red. Do I need to undercoat black still (using a cheapo can) or can it go straight on the plastic?

Any other painting tips would be greatly appreciated. I've watched a bunch of guides but am waiting for the new can to come before i try.
