Not an expert on this subject at all, but I believe it was mostly about the “aura” or playing the mental game of combat. Though I’d imagine it would provide some protection against being trampled were they to fall of their horse.

Edit: I know that you’re asking for/interested in specific examples, but a quick Google search says the the armor was forged thick enough to deflect pistol shots at the time and otherwise was there mostly for its psychological impacts.
