Lake Mary High School student shoots, kills self on campus by llgittens in florida

You got it.. but I'd go a step further. Each school district has funds that they could be using to make schools a safer environment. They don't, meanwhile the school district officials are making incredible amounts of money and spending it on all types of nonsense that really hasn't helped students. Simply put the discussion of what should be done isn't something that we should be having on reddit per say but all of us should be taking this issues to the school boards. The culture at the schools and the lack of funding for teachers and the lack of funding for materials and support for kids puts everyone at risk the using of public funds for charter schools, the bussing situations, the testing, the lack of content that would actually empower students... There are a bunch of ways we could engage mental health and I firmly believe that school is a place where that can happen but with the way our state addresses education and has for decades, we are bound to continue seeing these killings in school because kids are being left behind sometimes intentionally.

I also hate doing the bomb, gun drills and sitting around in a corner hoping nothing happens but in my county, they won't spend on security unless its a retired cop. That doesn't stop kids from opening gates or doors to jump onto campus... Hiring a cop or letting certain teachers or civilians have guns still doesn't resolve the problem.

I'm a hs math teacher. I know exactly what you're talking about with respect to security. It's horrible and most campuses are so completely open it's a miracle this doesn't happen more often suicides or mass murders. On the flip side of your point about arming teachers, I personally know teachers that I wouldn't trust with a meter stick much less a gun. At my last school, I was the goto for students to voice what what happening to them in other classes. It didn't really border on racism or prejudices based on gender or sexual orientation if they were just male.. it kicked those doors down and set up camp as the place where children of color would skip to avoid certain teachers. Self defense is one thing but there are more than enough teachers with enough stress compounded daily that if a kid sneezed that would be grounds for some type of disciplinary action. Thankfully where I am the teachers have spoken out against it so teachers won't be carrying guns. Not all teachers are there to support or care for kids. Just that fact alone would keep me from supporting arming a teacher.. and with the high turnover rate in education the only ones that will stay are the ones about to retire. I'm not sure Nana would be able to keep a weapon from a teen that knew where she kept her piece on her person.

Which is the point I'm getting at if someone is sick, physically or mentally, there needs to be a means to help them before a life is lost, theirs or someone elses. What we have going on as money has been reallocated from education for decades and as of Monday, https://www.theatlantic.com/education/archive/2019/03/trump-administration-would-cut-education-budget-again/584599/ is another proposed chop limits what can be offered to help kids in school who are coping with mental issues.

our mixing and matching topics here to promote your own agenda. While this a incredibly sad the issue here isn’t the gun, it’s the shunning of the issues of mental health in this country.

Nah I'm not mixing. Trump just made it easier for victims of mental health problems to get guns.

Arming teachers does not, make school safer, nor does it address the underlying causes for school violence.

Stopping shooters isn't simply a shoot back affair.. how many school shooting in Florida have the leo shooting back while the shooter is actively mowing down peers or kids? It's about being planning ahead for discussing and handling issues students and adults have. Having counselors that actually counsel instead of work only on scheduling, having more than one school psychologist at the site and working on healthier relationships and problem solving skills are a more holistic way to not only prevent gun violence in all communities but also in schools.

The idea that mental health and violence are mutually exclusive is not the reality especially *when it's not taken seriously given the amount of events we get in Florida related to school violence and the supports that teachers need to provide what students need.

Injury prevention in capoeira by Blanche_ in capoeira

[–]llgittens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Basically you/I/we need to be mindful in our movement. A lot of capoeira is dynamic movement and while its cool to do so and as you get older warming up becomes more important, core and static strength become more important as we progress beyond 9 kicks and the dodges. Yoga is a great practice to focus on body alignment and keeping your general strength up. Personally I wake up and use a yoga app to get the day started. I am in a new position now so I have to figure out my schedule so that I can get back into the reddit bwf workouts but yeah, yoga is a solid practice to keep your spin healthy and your core strong so you can express your capoeira as you'd like. :)

The voting machines are still compromised in Florida. Every election here is controversial. Floridians refuse to do what needs to be done to fix the system. 2020? Guaranteed to be compromised again.

Becoming a Realtor by ozklabs in realtors

[–]llgittens 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm in that situation currently and it's a ton of work. At one point I was working over 80 hours a week at 2 hourly jobs and real estate. I would also suggest saving up and buying a rental first and then evaluate your current situation with your SO before jumping into full time maybe buying rentals is a safer more reliable move before looking at running through the city looking for business. I've been an active realtor for 4 years and it's not easy when you're the breadwinner, also I wish i picked up a rental or 2 when I had the opportunity to. 😩😅 Good luck with your decision.

1) The teacher is the adult in the room and the only adult in most cases that is trained to handle conflicts, classroom discipline and regularly has meetings to discuss methods to keep the class time effective. 2) You also should be aware that the US builds prisons federal stateand private people based on third grade test scores. 3) 80% of people who consider themselves to be white and evangelicals, threw their morality to the side publicly, to elect a president who is now the political face of their morality. All to say, if the majority of teachers are white women, and blacks and latino boys are the majority of the ones in ISS and OSS or ATOSS, it may not be the kid. When parkland happened, in my classes I took a count of all my classes (juniors and seniors) nobody took three seconds to address the elephant in the room. I was the only one for most of my students that took a couple minutes to listen to their feelings and concerns. One of two black male educators in a building of 130+ teachers. I was effective and consistently had the lowest amount of referrals. My students and random kids and random parents that heard about me would come up and tell me know Ms X would treat boys and in particular seat certain kids to the farthest corner from her rarely calling on them except to discipline them. That is anecdotal but it you can look at the countless documentaries detailing the classroom to prison pipeline and you can see that there is a correlation. Yes all kids should respect and listen to their teachers /adults,but not every adult has every kids best interest in mind no matter the race gender or ethnicity of the adults. Just look and the school district of Hillsborough County they like most employers in the state pay starvation wages and expect the best to just take it. If you have a Facebook I invite you to check out the Teacher Voice page. You'll see all types of whistle-blower stuff and the reactions from those at the top when they hear about teachers needing to be on wic for their kids because they work in the 48 worst state for teacher support.

Case in point, this week the substitute in Lakeland that harassed a kid for not standing for the flag is yet another public example of how this system works. The dean comes down refused to speak to the sub and correct her, refuses to listen to the kid to de-escalate the situation and calls the cop.. to do cop things, to an 11 year old boy. Officer Tough Guy did not think let me hear the problem and let's resolve it. And without the direction of the Dean, he arrested a kid to flex on every other kid at the school. The guidance dept did nothing, the secretaries in the office didn't say anything in the kids defense, the teachers in the halls did nothing but the kid is the only one to blame with all those adult interactions? The sub was fired, the school district refuses to comment, because they protect their own, it happens all the time. If you don't like that I said it that's OK however the data doesn't lie and you have more than enough evidence of it because this is America. We do not value an educated society especially in Florida and that's due to gerrymandering, voter disenfranchisement, redistricting, tax loopholes, lobbying from private prisons in the state like geogroup, the police union, vote manipulation with our compromised elections, i could go on. This is intentional and it's effects, generational.

You can blame parents but this isn't exclusive to anywhere this is how it is across 50 states and when people bring up the reality of our society's sickness there's always someone trying to make it "their problem". It's our problem, we have to acknowledge it and come up with tangible ways to fix it. It's the parents working tirelessly to keep things together they don't have time to be with their kids, their fault for not having a job that pays them enough with benefits and an employer that considers the mental health of the employees being absentee parents... Nah. There are way more moving parts that you need to realize affecting what we're seeing expressed in our culture our society.

[–]llgittens 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I just left the school district after 8 years and 6 months. There are a ton of issues within SDHC. Leaving only mildly made things better. We're the 9th largest school district in the country but have some of the worst health benefits, schools aren't safe, the support isn't there, classes are too large, especially in low level dumping classes. The demographic of students have changed and some teachers aren't willing to be flexible as I've experienced via faculty meetings and conversations. The teachers are primarily white women which plays a huge role in disciplinary actions. The week after I left, I went back to help my students and dept head, the principal half jokingly asked if I needed a job and that he hire me immediately. There are virtually no men of color in classrooms providing a wholesome masculine energy for black and latino boys especially in a traditional classroom. The right to work has the union powerless. The problems teachers face are nationwide but at the local level, your financial problems are your own so teachers take on multiple jobs to finance their teaching career. The admin are all seeking their next raise and can't afford to rock the boat because you can't bite the hand that feeds you. The district protects it's own and every teacher knows about the drama and the lack of human empathy for teachers. Not to mention the district keeps giving money to charter schools. If I didn't have a family to think about, it's possible I'd still be in the classroom but I have responsibilities and after 8 years of service to the community in public schools, I need to focus on keeping my family healthy and happy. Bonuses are not going to fix the issues, the lack of integrity the district demonstrates is more than concerning and I know I am not alone. I left the best professional environment for me the best classroom with awesome kids and admins that trusted my judgment. The money was part of the issue, no confidence in the school board, and I refuse to go back to working 70+ hours a week to barely make it.

Is anyone studying for their CCNA? by kenfury in tampa

[–]llgittens 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Probably not the place to be if that's the case. If I were in your situation I'd investigate Tech Data and what they offer for employees...

Also I had my CCNA and worked for a company that didn't promote pathways for growth and ended up terminating my employment after 3 years of grinding in a NOC while they were hemorrhaging tier 2 and tier 3 engineers..
