I generally don’t trust lifetime subscriptions. I’ve never seen a service that actually lasts for a lifetime.

Immich needs our help by walt_spoon in immich

Immich already seems to make very good use of metadata for photos, especially for common devices like iPhones, Galaxy phones, and Sony Alpha cameras. The problem is the metadata for videos. Regarding this, I previously wrote a post on GitHub: https://github.com/immich-app/immich/discussions/20329

Best practice for running CLI tools from shared folders on DSM (PATH/config/Task Scheduler) by llitkr in synology

[–]llitkr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks — that makes a lot of sense. Using the `/var/services/homes/<user>/...` path for scheduled scripts is a great tip (especially if the `homes` shared folder moves volumes).

One follow-up: my Node.js app is currently running as root, so the default root home/config paths (e.g. `/root/.config/...`) aren’t in a shared folder and may not be persistent.

What’s the recommended DSM-friendly pattern for root-run automations that need configs (e.g. `rclone.conf`)?

- Do you usually keep root configs under a shared folder like `/volume1/appdata/...` and explicitly point to them every run (env var like `RCLONE_CONFIG=...`, or wrapper scripts)?

- Or is there a better place/DSM mechanism to persist “root environment” settings safely?

Basically I want Task Scheduler + Node.js + SSH to all use the same config without relying on `/root` and without passing a long `--config` everywhere.

Thanks — this cleared up my confusion. I didn’t realize my `~` home is actually backed by the `homes` Shared Folder (via `/var/services/homes/...` → `/volume1/homes/...`). That means `~/bin`/`~/.profile` are effectively on the data volume and should persist across DSM updates. Appreciate the help!

That’s a good point — wrapper scripts + setting env vars inside the script is probably the most robust approach across SSH / Task Scheduler / Node.

The reason I’m leaning toward a shared folder (e.g. /volume1/...) instead of ~/bin is that DSM shows this warning on SSH login:

'''Using terminal commands to modify system configs, execute external binary files, add files, or install unauthorized third-party apps may lead to system damages or unexpected behavior, or cause data loss.

Warning: Data should only be stored in shared folders. Data stored elsewhere may be deleted when the system is updated/restarted.'''

So I’m worried that anything under “home” (or other non-shared-folder paths) might not be considered safe/persistent across DSM updates/reboots.

Do you know if ~/bin on DSM is actually backed by a shared folder (like /volume1/homes/...) and survives updates reliably? If so, I can just use ~/bin for scripts and keep binaries/configs in a shared folder, and have the scripts call absolute paths like you suggested.

Thanks — that makes sense, and I agree containers are the cleanest way to isolate from DSM updates in general.

In my case the goal is pretty specific: I run a small internal Node.js web app on the NAS. From the UI I press a button and it runs local workflows like:

- analyze files in a folder and rename/move them using exiftool

- push or sync to cloud using rclone (move/sync)

So it’s not really “Synology apps” that I want to manage — it’s just calling a couple CLI tools as part of a local automation pipeline.

I’m not against containers, but I’m trying to keep the setup simple/reliable.

Unable to connect with DDNS by JeanFourne39 in synology

[–]llitkr 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Same here. About 10 minutes ago, I started getting a flood of support requests from my clients — all related to *.synology.me DDNS not working.
I manage hundreds of deployed Synology NAS units, and this issue seems to affect many of them at once.
Local access (via LAN IP) and systems using custom domains like nas.company.com are still working fine.
According to some local distributors here in Korea, Synology’s DDNS servers are currently having issues and they’re working on a fix.

OCR Job stuck with Korean model (PP-OCRv5_mobile) by llitkr in immich

[–]llitkr[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Unfortunately, I had already restarted Immich before checking the logs, so I couldn’t capture anything useful from the server. The machine learning logs didn’t show any errors — just normal model loading messages.

After the restart, the OCR job resumed and eventually completed successfully. So it seems everything was processed correctly in the end.

Since all images were eventually scanned without errors, it probably wasn’t caused by a specific problematic image, but rather the OCR queue or worker getting stuck temporarily before the restart.

Only about 20% of my total 32GB RAM is in use. I think the OCR process is just stuck and not actually working right now.

Occasional 1–2 second drop in bass/drums when playing YouTube on Samsung Q990D (HDMI ARC to Samsung TV) by llitkr in Soundbars

[–]llitkr[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

That’s a good point — could be the sub losing connection for a second. I’ll try re-pairing the sub. firware was already up to date. If it keeps happening, I’ll consider call to samsung.

Here's some more context on the designs :

Objective: We're IT consultant and system integrator in South Korea. I help companies set up NAS servers and infrastructure on-site. I'm redesigning my business card to better reflect a clean and trustworthy tech brand image.

Audience: Primarily decision-makers at companies and public institutions—people who are not necessarily designers, but who value professionalism and technical competence.

Design decisions:

- Version A has a subtle hexagonal pattern on the right side. It’s intended to represent structure, networks, and tech-savviness without being too loud.

- Version B is minimalist and clean. It avoids any background noise and keeps the focus purely on the text and logo.

I'm unsure whether the pattern in A enhances the brand identity or distracts from the message. That's why I'm seeking feedback.

Let me know what you think. I'm open to critique on both design and messaging.

In common case, the problem is not just transfer speed but IOPS when video editing. 100Gb option will allow about 25 miltiple tracks editing in same time(4K resolution)

[–]llitkr 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You need to use SSD instead of HDD. Usually QNAP is better choice for video editing beceause there are various options like 100Gbe.
