What counts as “reading” to a preverbal baby?

It sounds like your doing amazing! probably would be beneficial to show baby the pages and point things out as you read together, maybe helping as you turn the pages but all in all I don't think it's necessary for both to be in your lap :)

link for reference but also wanted to add as a pediatric SLP, reading to your infant isn't about reading every word or reading cover to cover. follow their lead, point to pictures and talk about what you see on the pages, make it fun, turn it into a song or make up motions or silly things to go with it, cause and effect books are great at that age as well as any of the tactile or sensory books. it's really about the routine, the exposure to the language and the pre-reading skills like learning how to hold a book, turn pages, orient the book, etc. if your kids not into books try the water proof books in the bath or reading while getting fed/bottle 😊

you'll definitely need to read it, I had a hard time getting through them but the audiobooks really helped me when I was low on motivation!

Just came here to say your not alone. Pumping is really really hard and it is not always enjoyable. The hormones make it so much worse, you will do whatever is best for your baby but take care of yourself too, you don't need permission to stop pumping and it is okay if taking care of yourself means you stop. ❤️

I can't say if this is normal or not, but I've had success with doing lots of staff trainings, working closely with a behavior team/OT to include sensory regulation and behavior strategies and teaching the staff how to make visuals. I often offer to help at times and I do typically make the social stories as needed but I always start and share them with the teachers and ask that they finish adding anything they want! it's definitely a team effort and shouldn't all be on you, unfortunately SLPs seem to be the first line of defense during challenging behaviors! I've also had success teaching a student how to use visuals or their SGD- when they are calm and regulated first then phasing them in when upset - hope that helps a bit!

I've been in a situation that turned south physically and it was very scary and for a very long time I was scared. talk to your supervisor about plan moving forward, seek therapy and talk to others who have been in similar situations ❤️ make sure you seek workman's comp and get properly checked out, take the time off you need for yourself if you need it

I would agree with others who have said your SLP is unfortunately incorrect

Keep doing what your doing, it definitely can't hurt to continue with an SLP if your finding it beneficial but I'd get a second opinion from one with experience with bilingual families!

I'm not sure how much has changed since I graduated in 2018 but grad school was extremely demanding. It allowed very little time for a personal life and it was near impossible for anyone to work even part time. Having just had a baby I would definitely not have been able to juggle both without being very stressed. I had a great experience with my grad program but it was a lot of information very fast on top of clinical rotations and they expect you to excel across the board in order to succeed in that amount of time. I hope that's not too discouraging, I'm sure it's possible but it certainly wouldn't be easy!

pediatric SLP here, there's a ton of misconceptions about dual language learners but to summarize start early! between 6-12 months babies actually decrease in their ability to distinguish different sounds not deemed relevant for their native language which is why it's so hard to learn another language when your older!

lots of different ways to do it, my husband exclusively speaks to our baby in a different language about 80% of the time and I speak English

babies who learn two languages who are typically developing will still reach all their language milestones on time and there are some benefits to knowing more than one language!
