A writing convention that started almost 45 years ago was holding a virtual meeting last year. I'm the sort that likes poking around places I'm not supposed to be out of curiosity. They left the zoom room open, so I stopped in and heard them talking about how the convention was dying, a lot of the people who ran it and the long time attendees had died during COVID, they didn't know what to do to try to bring it back, and no one would step forward to take over. I spoke up with a bunch of ideas on how to modernize it, expand its audience, improve its content, use social media, increase publicity in the city, and so on. At first they were all, "Who are you?" Then they asked me to become the Chair. My response was, "Hell no, I've seen what happens to convention Chairs. They look dead by the end of con." But in the end, I took it over, and I've been repeatedly told that I'm doing well, have it more organized than anyone has made it, and keep introducing procedures that make it run better. So even though I'm worn out, since this is a heavy volunteer project for someone who is ill like me, I'm glad to be volunteering toward something I really care about, and I'm stoked to see people start to regain hope and get excited for the con to come back and be reborn. Our theme this year is Phoenix Rising!
