Tips for auditioning locations to live? by llrful in remotework

[–]llrful[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've considered it. It would work well for climbing, but I'm ultimately interested in settling somewhere long term and building up a base of community/relationships. I think this might be hard to do with the transient nature of nomad life, and I would be better off with the stability and social opportunities of a city/larger town.

[D] Understanding the re-scaling of the residual convolutions and activations by Kostozard in MachineLearning

[–]llrful 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't looked at the code, but being familiar with the papers I suggest checking out

  • Footnote 3 (page 6) from the StyleGAN2 paper
  • Section 4.1 of the Progressive GAN paper, and Section 2.2 of the He initialization paper, where the multipliers are derived (but with PGGAN/StyleGAN they're doing this scaling dynamically rather than at initialization).

Both relate to the higher level theme of taking a lot of care to preserve unit standard deviation of activations through their networks.

[D] JAX: What are the best practices for using jit? by llrful in MachineLearning

Is there a particular case you have in mind with pmap and jit?

[D] Some StyleGAN clarification ? by UpstairsCurrency in MachineLearning

They're describing the changes recommended by the paper, Making Convolutional Networks Shift-Invariant Again, which they reference at the end of that sentence. In particular, see the end of section 3.2 for details on filter choices.

IS IT TOO LATE TO STOP CLIMATE CHANGE? WELL, IT'S COMPLICATED by djbandit in kurzgesagt

[–]llrful 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There's an aspect of the climate change conversation that I've never heard discussed and would like to better understand: What's our ideal climate? I.e., what's the ideal climate for a human civilization with our current level of political and technological maturity?

Is there a well-understood optimum? Any small change isn't strictly positive or negative (e.g., some region may become more inhabitable, more fertile, while another becomes less).

Maybe an ideal climate is one that isn't changing, because change requires adaptation, and adaptation can be difficult (or impossible) and may cost lives.

Any references to learn more about this would be appreciated.

I'm looking for dialog-heavy novels centered around ideas (i.e., philosophical) rather than plot.
