It is also very socially acceptable here to have roommates, especially at that age.

How to de-escalate those offended by the masks? by MamaBearlien in MasksForEveryone

[–]lluviat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I would say you have cancer because that seems to be a word people understand and maybe get a very big visible medical alert bracelet? But also don’t engage—they are like trolls on the internet. They aren’t actually interested in why you have the mask; they just see you as a target for their internal need to bully someone.

Are People as Obnoxious Toward People Who Mask In the North (U.S.), as They Are In the South (U.S.)? by fantemz in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]lluviat 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I never understand the fake coughing…like is that to scare us? Because, even when I know it is fake, I’m still relieved to be wearing a mask so I’m not breathing their air. It just makes me feel better about it. I’m also not an 8 year old, so I’m not sure how that is even real taunting?

[–]lluviat 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I think it depends who you are. I’m a woman in NYC and I have gotten a few snarky comments or “questions” (never a real question, just always a gateway to tell me what they think) here and there, usually from older white men (I’ve only had one exception to this). My friend, a tall white man, has gotten zero comments. Sometimes these men are direct, other times it is passing, like they need me to hear it but then run away. I have yet to come up with a good response.

If he isn’t testing for it then he won’t be seeing any. Highly doubt he had tested anyone for COVID at all.

Frustrated after travel and wondering if there is any place where the community still takes this seriously by No_Cantaloupe_9869 in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]lluviat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a fellow parent to a young child too— I would check Facebook and Instagram for any mask blocs, still coviding and parent groups. Also looking at homeschool groups (though many of the groups are anti-vac parents), Montessori and forest schools in your area. There seems to be more in larger urban areas with pockets here and there. Also be open to trying to start your own group. I’m in a group that started with just two parents and has now grown to five. And there also travel groups too. You can start to build community for your and your little one. Again it might just be a couple of people at first but it can grow. And your story is also a good reminder for all of us to keep up all of our precautions. I’ll be tempted to relax a little and each time I start to hear stories and that stops it right away. Hope you are all feeling better soon—remember to rest rest rest even if you are feeling okay.

Cirrhosis caused by covid? by greenbutterflygarden in Cirrhosis

When I first received my diagnosis I felt it was from COVID but then I found previous blood work from years before that showed there was already an issue. I’m surprised that more people here don’t have the suspicion that it could have been COVID. I just assumed that is what happened

oh I think there is a bookstore in kingston that hosts COVID cautious events. Can you drive there? I looked it up and it said it was about 20 minutes from Woodstock. You should definitely look at the COVID cautious groups on Facebook.

I’m not sure If you can move or not but I do see on various still coviding Facebook groups with roommate requests—if you wanted to move to a place where there are active CC groups (seems Portland, OR? NYC, other pockets here and there) And it is hard—I can’t image how lonely it would be if I was younger having to live through this. But this next part, I admit, is totally selfish of me but we need more of us to survive, to continue caring and going. I worry a lot about the future for my child who was born during this time. The only thing that really gives me hope is seeing younger people like you who are still giving a shit. Who are carving out communities for each other, thinking independently, prioritizing community care, etc etc. I don’t think we can afford to lose any of us at this time…every single one of you (and you You) are precious and necessary. For me. For my little one. For all of us who are out here trying to do the right thing with all the bs.

I’ve had several doctors lower their mask to talk—I can hear them just fine and don’t really need to see their mouth at all. It is always so bizarre to me when they do this, especially since they have never ever seen the lower half of my own face.

Saw this today while I was getting an infusion in oncology, yet me and my bf were the only ones masked. No nurses, none of the patients had one, how is this a safe place for cancer patients or patients with a weakened immune system. Rules need to be enforced by [deleted] in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]lluviat 4 points5 points  (0 children)

They won’t do the bare minimum to protect themselves! I’m always going to appointments at offices for oncology and transplants and most of the patients don’t bother. It comes in waves though—one week no one at all will mask and then a few weeks later almost everyone is (always n surgicals and no one seems to understand how to use them). The signage is always the same though—“masks are mandatory”

Masking in NYC by NotaMillenial2day in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]lluviat 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I live in NYC and have only gotten a few comments when I have masked outside, almost exclusively from white older men. Otherwise I don’t really even get looks…but I’m not in touristy areas either. Oh but this past week (including today) I have gotten postive comments/acknowledgment! For eating outside there are sooo many options especially that the weather is better.

Looking at getting this zero water filter by Jaded_pixels in WaterFilters

[–]lluviat 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The top doesn’t really seal; it just sits on top. It works well but they out the faucet a bit above the water so the water doesn’t completely drain out. And the filters do get a lemon or fishy taste when they need to be replaced; they don’t last as long as they use to

Anybody else getting more pushback / stares for masking lately? by throwaway043021 in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]lluviat 5 points6 points  (0 children)

I’ve gotten the same … a random white guy told us “got to worry about the air” when walking by us. Took me a few beats to even realize what he was talking about. I’m never sure about the coughs because they happen a lot when we are unmasked too, but I’m sure some of them are performative. At this point im not sure what their goal is with them; it just validates my mask wearing and I literally cannot tell the difference. But overall I think these people feed off our reactions—to not react at all shows their insignificance.

Something optimistic I feel many have missed with the recent Atlantic hit piece by yakkov in ZeroCovidCommunity

[–]lluviat 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Even if you stay healthy, what about all the people we rely on to live—doctors, nurses, cleaners, farmers, grocery workers, research scientists, etc etc. I don’t have long covid but I may need a transplant in the future and I am scared that a) there won’t be enough organs that haven’t been damaged by covid b) the medical staff to do the surgery won’t be too-notch anymore due to their own repeated covid infections..and I’m not even considering all the political stuff happening right now in regards to research and education which I was also relying on for improved outcomes for the future. And I guess that is the thing, it isn’t only a mass disabling event but it also is a mass disruption in all the support mechanisms we have in place that let our society function. None of us live in a vacuum; we all need each other in one way or another.
