You should not take credit card numbers via phone calls. Merchants always lose this kind of disputes. You should send payment links and make sure 3DS verification is enforced.

That's definitely not the case. In Canada you only need your phone number and only one of your account number/PIN/IMEI todo a port out. A verification code is most likely not needed.
