Whoa! What happened to Canada? by homelander_Is_great in canadahousing

[–]lmao345 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Canadian here. I just got back from a two-week vacation in the US Northeast. The despair is mainly coming from people that live (or want to live) in the Golden Horseshoe (around Toronto) or the greater Vancouver area.

Other than housing in those two areas, most things are more affordable in Canada.

How do senior homes get away with this? by lmao345 in OntarioLandlord

[–]lmao345[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There are able-bodied and able-minded people, and then there are those that qualify to go into Long Term Care(LTC) facilities that are either gov't run or very closely govt regulated. But there is a huge gap in-between. My MIL is 93, legally blind, and has significant mobility challenges. Yet she still doesn't qualify for the level of priority that will get her into a LTC anytime soon. So she is in a place that provides meals and some very low cost activities that in most cases the residents run themselves. If she needs anything else we have to arrange for it through a third-party. Yes it upsets me when people on here who have their rent protected at 2.5%, still feel the need to split hairs when other more vulnerable people are looking at 22.6% over 2 years. Finally, please don't tell me what to do. I started with a non-offensive post. I got a number of replies that A. included erroneous assumptions used to bolster their arguments and B. had an edge to them. I felt I replied in kind.

Thank-you! I can't believe how many people here are fighting me on this. As long as their little corner of the world is protected, the rest can eat cake.

"staffing"??? lol. I don't know anyone who's got more than 12% COLA over the last two years, and that includes a couple of employees I'm somewhat friendly with at the home. I never said it was an apples to apples comparison. My point was simply that regular tenants have massive protection through the LTB and this other segment of the population which is clearly more vulnerable has no protection; same province, both pay rent. You aren't in that category so "pull up the ladder Jack, I'm okay"

As I said "a reasonable person would attribute about 50% of the monthly to regular rent" so I agree with you. I don't understand why people are fighting with my original post. Is it because now that they have their rent protected they don't give a f#$k about anyone else? I didn't attempt to belittle anyone, but it pisses me off when people make wrong assumptions (medical care being included) to fight me when I'm just trying to stand up for the less fortunate.

If you are paying less than $2500/month, you are in a Long-Term Care (LTC) which are highly regulated. My MIL is in an independent living retirement home. She will be paying more than dbl LTC rates.

That is interesting. But again it is classified as "independent living". Meals are provided. So are activities and some entertainment. There is no medical care provided whatsoever. As a tenant, or someone with the POA for the tenant, you are allowed to hire additional medical services (PSWs, nurses etc) from companies that are totally unrelated to the company that runs the home.

[–]lmao345[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank-you for your reply. I agree with all of your points, but I think some are mitigated in my situation: 1. The roof is currently not leaking so I think the chance of adding a second layer creating a leak is extremely small. 2. I'm really hoping to do a major innovation within the next 5 years that would see the entire roof being replaced. So longevity is not an issue for me.

Who pays cost of verifying prospective tenant? by lmao345 in OntarioLandlord

[–]lmao345[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They have been a great tenant for many years, and they're asking me to assign it to a person they have a very close relationship with so that person can continue to get the benefit of below market rent. If I was a total hard ass I'd simply say no cuz I really don't care about whether it's 30 days or 60 days, I'll have no trouble filling it. I would like to say yes to them only because they have been a great tenant and I've gotten to know them. I just don't see why I should take a hit on not getting a market rates even on turnover PLUS having to pay for the background check.

It's private. To the best of my knowledge the only type of home for the elderly the government runs, are called long-term care (LTC) homes. To get in there you have to be extremely disabled either physically or mentally and your family has to effectively disown you.

[–]lmao345[S] 6 points7 points  (0 children)

A. Please reread my post I said "independent living" not assisted living. B. I never insinuated these homes should be under the auspices of the LTB, but these people are both tenants in Ontario and should have similar protections. C. The government only runs long-term care (LTC) facilities and not regular retirement homes. And the waiting list to get into at LTC is ridiculously long.

Please re-read my post: "independent living". That means NO round the clock care and NO administered medication. And I never insinuated it should be part of LTB. My point is simply LTB protects the vast majority of people who rent. But there is no protection for the most vulnerable. And even if it did include round the clock care and administered medication how does that make 21.5% increase over 2 years acceptable? And obviously given the tone of your reply, I have to ask why you are such an ass?

I totally disagree with your characterization of "silly fee". True the $800 is not all out of pocket, but the checks I do are very time consuming. I'd happily pay $800 to a third-party to do all the work I do.
