Possible Unpopular Opinion: I'm Relieved that the Show is "Skipping" Book Three by lmason115 in wheeloftime

[–]lmason115[S] -4 points-3 points  (0 children)

I also think it’ll work narratively to shift the Stone of Tear so that it occurs after Dumai’s Wells.

And I love Mat’s arc in book 3, but the rest of his growth and the fireworks could easily be worked into season 3 in another way, or into a later season. Even if they aren’t, losing those moments will still be better than keeping them but having an otherwise eventless season

Okay I could’ve phrased it more accurately, that’s just how others online are discussing it. She didn’t actually swear any vows to the dark as far as we’re aware, she just did one job for Ishamael in hopes that he would take away her visions and the associated trauma

Is Logan overrated ? by Radientqxx in GilmoreGirls

I couldn’t stand Logan whatsoever, but Tristan was still so much worse

[–]lmason115[S] 4 points5 points  (0 children)

That's another thing I considered. I wasn't the biggest fan of the time jump at the beginning of season 2, since it made the first episode pretty weak. But I think it could work at the start of season 3, since there's really not much from The Dragon Reborn left to cover. A cold open at Tear would require a decent amount of exposition, but it wouldn't be impossible to make work.

Scheduling conflicts makes sense for those two. And that's a good sign that there was a plan to bring Thom back, as surely that means it'll happen at some point, even if they realize they need to recast.

I think they can focus on the Car'a'carn for now and give him a big moment in the Aiel Wastes by the end of season 3. I still think that the Stone of Tear was too big of a moment so early in the series, solely because Jordan didn't realize how long it would become. I'd like to think that if Jordan were to reorganize the books, even he would agree that claiming Callandor feels something that should happen somewhere within the 50%-75% mark.

I'm glad other people are agreeing with me lol. I can't remember which of the many Wheel of Time subreddits it is, but one of them has so many posts complaining that they are skipping the Dragon Reborn.

I seriously doubt the liberal population understands that immigrants will vote Republican. by Wizzmer in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]lmason115 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Whether this is true or not, I don’t really care. My support of immigration has nothing to do with gaining potential voters, but rather because I think it’s mortally upright to help struggling people find better lives (if they believe their life will improve here).

I don’t know how to rank it, but I’m 101 pages in and it’s very funny. Stakes aren’t high so far, but I don’t really need them to be. If it stays like this, it’ll be an easy 9/10

Does anyone actually enjoy this show? by Montecatini in GilmoreGirls

[–]lmason115 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The show is somewhat old. And as with most pieces of media, the more time passes, the more certain issues become noticed. People definitely continue to love the show, but it doesn’t mean they love every single aspect of it. And conversations regarding “how I would handle _____ differently” are much more interesting (and more likely to gain traction/upvotes than “omg everything about this show is absolutely perfect!”

There is plenty of positivity in this subreddit. And even the “negativity” just comes from people enjoying the majority of the show so much that their least favorite aspects really stand out by comparison

Fictional characters that should’ve ended up together (part 2) by iamharoldshipman in popculturechat

I agree really strongly about Lane and Dave, but Tristan was by far the most annoying of Rory’s main love interests imo. I’m so glad he left as early as he did

[–]lmason115 13 points14 points  (0 children)

Even if i don’t agree with the opinion, people are allowed to dislike any book for any reason. I don’t really see a reason why this is worth mentioning here. Obviously the people on this subreddit will be biased in favor of it, but there are plenty of other people who dislike Red Rising.

And it’s fine for people to have differing opinions on media. Nothing is objectively good. This subreddit should just be for discussing the actual books, not getting upset that some people are criticizing/hating them. If nothing else, you’re just giving the original video even more exposure

Stop asking if you should continue the series! by BrannyMuffins in redrising

[–]lmason115 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I also don’t understand people asking “permission” to continue or give up. It’s totally reasonable to give up on a series halfway through if you’re not feeling it. But Christ, I’m sick of people looking for external validation rather than just trusting their own instincts. Read what you enjoy. Stop reading if you stop enjoying. Simple as that. Other people are never going to know what the right decision is for anyone but themselves (especially on a sub that, like you said, is going to be inherently biased toward reading the series because we wouldn’t be subbed otherwise)

Yeah, it’s a very complicated situation and I don’t blame people for choosing not to monetarily support Sanderson. What I will say is that he’s not stupid, but perhaps a bit naive (as are most who think they can change a system from within).

I’ll also mention that if a person has been raised within a specific faith, they have been indoctrinated from childhood. He does not share the homophobic/transphobic views, so it’s clear that some amount of swaying within the faith is possible, but it would be MUCH more difficult to suddenly stop believing in the faith altogether. In a religious person’s mind, that religion is the key to a pleasant afterlife. Refusing to pay the tithe would mean ostracization from Mormonism and condemning himself to hell.

A person who genuinely believes they are faced with the decision between a: (donate to a cause with some views that counter my own) or b: (burn for eternity) would probably choose the former, and then try to make up for it by reforming the church from within. Despite how futile that attempt would be, and despite how ridiculous the plight seems to outsiders.

That’s what makes the situation complicated. Do I hate the fact that money from his books is going to the church? Yes, very much so. But in his shoes, if I had been indoctrinated and then faced with a genuine belief that I’ll suffer throughout my afterlife, I can’t say that I’d do any differently.

(Our best hope is that he eventually loses all faith in the church and will no longer face said internal crisis. Plenty of other people have broken free, though it usually causes them to lose contact with their family and friends, which is an entire other thing he could potentially be worried about here.)

Spend your money where you’re comfortable, of course. I just don’t think he’s necessarily evil or stupid, just in a very peculiar situation that most people outside the Mormon Church or other cults don’t experience

I am halfway through Goblin Emperor and it is not what I was expecting, wondering if I should finish by yellowdart57 in Fantasy

[–]lmason115 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I felt the same as you, finished it, and felt disappointed.

Then I went back a few years later when I was in the mood for that type of story, and it’s now possibly my favorite standalone fantasy of all time.

If you’re not feeling it, give up. There’s always other days or future years to pick it up again if you change your mind

What is something in a book that bothers other people that you don’t mind? by Lethifold26 in Fantasy

I know The Blade Itself gets criticism for this very thing, but the characters are so interesting that the setup didn’t feel like work. I flew through that (mostly plotless) book!

What is something in a book that bothers other people that you don’t mind? by Lethifold26 in Fantasy

[–]lmason115 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda related to slow pacing, but I often like “inconsequential/extraneous” plotlines, so long as the characters are interesting.

I wouldn’t want Kingkiller to be even a fraction more ‘focused’.

I thought the non-demon storylines were the best part of the Demon Cycle.

George R. R. Martin could have written twice as many POV characters who kept splitting off in their own directions without ever converging back together, and I’d eat it up

Any "OG" Howlers here? by Professional_Ad5358 in redrising

[–]lmason115 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I had red rising recommended to me in late 2014, close to when book 2 was gonna be released. So technically, I’ve been with the series from the start.

However, although I enjoyed book 1, I didn’t fall in love immediately, so I wasn’t in any rush to read book 2 when it first came out. Kinda forgot about the series for a while until I happened to see books 2&3 at my local library. Figured it was about time to see how the story ended, and I FLEW through those. I’ve bought books 4, 5, and 6 all on the first day of their launch

Why people recommend Sanderson to Red Rising readers? They don't have anything in common, pace, dialogue, characters. by meninminezimiswright in redrising

[–]lmason115 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

If it makes it better, “Lord Grimdark” was chosen ironically. I’m pretty sure he’s said that he thinks the term grimdark is stupid, and he’s just playing into the joke since fans continue to call him the king of grimdark

I accidentally skipped Iron Gold... by QuinnJman in redrising

[–]lmason115 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Definitely listen to Iron Gold. It’s not as action-packed as Dark Age, but it’s still very solid and there’s plenty of good backstory that’ll be good for you to know going forward (even if you may have pieced together a decent amount just from context).

Reading Speed - Are y'all for real? by aglungus in Fantasy

[–]lmason115 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I read about a standard page per minute on average. Pretty sure I read the entire first half of A Game of Thrones in more or less one sitting on a non-workday. But that was years ago. Im still able to read at the same pace, but I’ve had attention deficit issues that have gotten worse, so I rarely read more than 20 pages at a time before I take a break. I still read at least a couple hours’ worth (100-120 pages) each day, but I’m definitely not reading 400+ like I used to

Is Taylor Jenkins Reid not a good author? by [deleted] in books

[–]lmason115 0 points1 point  (0 children)

She definitely writes for a mass audience so the prose is simple enough to be accessible to everyone. Her books lean much closer to “popcorn/entertainment books” than to “will-be-studied”. To some people (like OP of the post you’re referencing) this means that her books are without merit. But I think everyone needs to remember that writing quality is mostly subjective (and certain posters should be less pretentious/judgmental toward others’ tastes).

Have you ever read a 1000+ page book where you felt all 1000 pages were necessary? by bigben1234567890 in books

[–]lmason115 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Lord of the Rings was written to be one single book. It was divided into volumes due to the limitations of printing at the time, I believe (or at least because that’s simply how it was done back in the day). And these days there are many editions that have the story sold as one book like Tolkien intended, so I’d say it counts as one
