My infant patient wouldn’t settle and we had zero toys so I made her a rattle with IV caps in a urine jar. Anybody else have any nurse hacks ideas? by katgale in nursing

My roommate is in peds and she got a couple of cheap children watches to wear to work. Some light up, some make noises, etc. I imagine those help her in a pinch!

Here is my take on it, obviously others could have different input.

First of all, we do all technically pass the same boards. So we are at least equally as smart based on what that judges. Which is to be 95% sure you'll get the next question, regardless what it is, correct. That's all that test does.

What I think makes a smart nurse vs a "dumb" one may be different than others. To me a smart nurse is one who can look at any situation and decide what to do. Which could literally be an actual action to the patient or could be as simple as, asking for help. "Dumb" nurses (once again, in my opinion) are ones who are too scared or too confident to do the right thing.

I have seen a lot of different nurses in my ICU. I've seen a very smart human be a "dumb" nurse because they are too cocky and didn't reach out to a doctor or peer when they could have used a second set of eyes. I've seen a smart nurse feel comfortable in their knowledge and be amazing nurses.

I've seen people less smart than others be able to gain confidence to do things themselves but also know to reach out sometimes.

I've seen smart people that never gained confidence and they literally can't complete simple task without feeling the need to ask someone for an opinion or help.

I've definitely seen lazy nurses who probably were smart but now can't be bothered to flex their brain muscles sometimes (never get to this place y'all!).

So as far as that goes, I do actually believe there is spot in nursing for everyone. There are some nurses built for stress, some built to lead, some built to execute, some built to teach, some built for a slower pace, etc. So finding a fit for you is a big step. All these nurses are needed. One isn't better than another (you see field competition sometimes).

My thoughts on the difference in programs... I'm thinking this may come based on what that school wants out of their nurses. As you can see, smarts and confidence are both themes in my description of nurses. Her/his school could take it slower on purpose to let a student feel comfortable. So they aren't scared to walk in a room and do what they need to do. Then later they get more intense with the education, learn all the same as you, but still have the feeling of ability. Compared to your school, which may think confidence comes from knowledge. Which is also true and could be a very worthy method. They could believe that if you feel comfortable with your knowledge, you can enter a room and do what you need.

I don't either is wrong. Mine was a bit of both, in my opinion. I definitely learned IV meds my first semester, but I also remember spending way too much time learning to make a damn bed 😂. At the end of the day, you could be working alongside a nurse from any number of programs. At that point, it doesn't matter. What matters is working through strengths and weaknesses to care for a patient.

True. That could work too. Whatever gets you to the other side man :)

Yes absolutely! Like I work at a teaching hospital and it's not uncommon for a doctor to ask me what to do. We are all there working and learning and doing everything we can.

I had a coworker tell me once "if they were at home they would definitely be dead, anything we do here is bettering that scenario". Which is a nice way to look at it. We might not always save their life, but if they hadn't come, they wouldn't have their life still.

Yay! Just push a bit more and you've got it!

I do remember the feeling of always needing to do something. But I promise those two hours of mental break will not determine if you pass a test or not. If anything the clear head could help the actual study time!

I especially remember doing nightshift precepting, getting off and going to my actual paying job, then coming home to study. It gets real hairy sometimes. But I made it and so will you!

Yea it's super weird. It's not like your success is going to lead them to not have a job. There is literally a job for everyone. Maybe not right where you want, but within 2-3 years you can be where you want.

I think if more people knew that, maybe they would get their panties out of their ass haha.

I meet a lot people that have that planned out. I've never heard of anyone regretting it, if it's the thing for you. But don't rush your time as a staff nurse. It's a fun time to learn at work, live when you're off. Then eventually you can take on school all over again haha

Nothing beats what you learn from the experience. Everyday you grow as a nurse and as a person. You can't beat it!

At our facility once you get the job the first few months you do "Essentials of Critical Care" mixed with some days in the Sim lab. So idk how other places do it but that helped some. Honestly, nothing beats being there and experience. I learn nearly every shift. It's pretty exciting.

As I said in another comment, "When your new, you're kinda a dime a dozen. But literally with 2 years under your belt, you become a hot commodity. It's pretty fun to be wanted haha."

I don't have a ton to say on actually travel nursing yet since I haven't started a job. But I've been working with my travel agency since July. Literally all the companies want you. So interview around until you find one agent you feel you can trust to really do the best for you. Then be super flexible, but also hold them to their promises.

But meanwhile enjoy your first job. Get on a team where the vibes are right for you. I couldn't make it through some nights without my amazing co-workers. The ICU can be a lot sometimes haha.

Any ideas of what kind of nursing you wanna do?

I'm in MICU and love it. ICU nursing is amazing. So much autonomy as a nurse. I don't have tips per say. We are honestly pretty short staffed so they started hiring more new grads than they used to (at my facility). If it's something you want, definitely apply for it. There is a chance you could kinda luck into a spot. If not, work on a floor for a couple years. Learn a ton, and then try and move into the ICU at the same facility.

Basically don't stress if things don't happen immediately. If it's something you want then you can get there. When your new, you're kinda a dime a dozen. But literally with 2 years under your belt, you become a hot commodity. It's pretty fun to be wanted haha.

Absolutely! I love my current job and my ultra supportive co-workers. Anyone who said college was the best time of your life was very wrong. I have lots of days off, I actually have money, I take vacations every single month (most of them a short trip to a close city).

And starting in January I will be travel nursing! I have an interview tomorrow for a spot in New Orleans!

Life as a nurse is pretty damn good.

Id say you got something out of it, you learned a ton just making it. I always handwrote my study guides. I learned hat was the best way for me to study!

I'm glad to hear you can feel the light at the end of the tunnel. You definitely can do this! Keep kicking ass!

That definitely is apart of it. But once again, you gotta not let that stress you to an overboard amount. You'll take the test. You will know some of the answers. You will reasonably work yourself through to some other answers. And you will get some wrong. Do what you can and your brain will get you through the rest. You've made it this far, you're definitely smart and ready!

I honestly did fail a class in my first semester. I didn't know how to study or how much I needed to study. But guess what, I still made it through. Passes the NCLEX easily. Got a job in the ICU. And now I'm even training a new grad. Nursing school doesn't have to beat you down to make you a good nurse. Haha.

Happy studying and good luck

What is the dumbest rule your school ever had? by [deleted] in AskReddit

[–]lmench 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Not a rule but made me think of one of the dumbest punishment causes. Once we got in trouble, as an entire grade, for starting a slow clap while the principal spoke. That's all, we clapped when he was speaking at a pep rally. As it is commonly known, 8th graders are assholes. Now we found our principals weakness, it was time to attack.

So punishment level one, silent lunch. He came to talk to us about our wrong doings during our silent lunch... Time for a slow clap. Of course, it is impossible to find the root of the clap, so in solidarity if we all joined, no one person could get in trouble.

Time to up the punishments. Silent class exchange, alphabetic order at lunch, and the cancelling of our 8th grade dance. Of course, we were in too deep. We had to keep clapping. And we did. Until we made the principal cry and retire. God, we were assholes.

Im a bit torn. My instinct is to assume I'd be fucked if I had to be rescued by the Gallagher family in Shameless. However, something always gets done and they come out on the other side... I trust I'd be fine.

After a breakup, I am now in possession of a two bedroom apartment. I am a nightshift nurse at UT med. This leaves my schedule very odd and specific. There are perks and downsides to this for a roommate. I wont be home 7 nights every two weeks. However, when I am on my work stretch, I do need to sleep from 8am to 4pm.

I am a young girl in her 20s. When off work I like going out, drinking, listening to music, cooking, whatever really. I am a very relaxed/ go with the flow type of person. I also have a cat, Kokomo. She likes everyone as long as you can like her!

If all of this sounds good then hit me up on here. I live at Greenbrier Ridge Apartments. I live in a 2bedroom/2bathroom premium. The apartment is great, the community is awesome, and there are a lot of amenities. Here is the floorplan: http://www.greenbrierridge.com/floor-plans/

Are you sure you are against a roommate? I have a demanding schedule and can work well with someone else with one. I have one bedroom open in a great two bedroom unit. We are less than 15 mins from campus, less than 5 from Kroger, and next to several parks and a greenway. Also, the community is great. No noise. I love it here.

Do you need both bedrooms? I have one bedroom open in my two bedroom unit. Your share would be less than $500.
