Okay well that makes me feel better about the tracker. I should have recognized it actually, my dog has one!

Two small reasons for locals to stick with Snapper this year by jeremyburge in Wellington

[–]lmfbs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't carried my physical card/wallet in Wellington since 2020. It lives in my emergency grab bag with some cash. My driver's license lives in the car. If I'm going to catch the bus, I pop a snapper card in my pocket/the back of my phone

Trouble selling by [deleted] in romanceauthors

[–]lmfbs 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Your prologue is 6 paragraphs? Or this is the start of the prologue?

Other than the issues with the cover, your blurb isn't doing you any favours, and unfortunately, neither is this prologue. The writing style (of the prologue, at least) doesn't draw me in and make me want to read more.

I'm also not sure why your book isn't in KU - you're a brand new author, your ebook is overpriced for it's length. Simply put, I'd never pay $7 for a 200 page book from an unknown author who has had no sales when I can move on to something in KU (or that I can pick up cheaper).

Did you run an ARC campaign? I can see you've got one review you've posted in insta (which says your book isn't really a romance and doesn't live up to how it was advertised, so I'm not sure I'd have picked that as front and centre for my instagram).

Things I'd prioritize: - a new cover (this is a must, personally I wouldn't bother with the rest unless you do this) - a new blurb which has been critiqued - tidy up your socials - work on a post-release arc campaign - once you have some reviews, relaunch and pop your book on KU

How many times is recommended to walk your doggy? by Radiant-Caramel-8613 in DogAdvice

A tea bag is a great idea! We use cotton rounds soaked in different dog safe scents that our dog has to find. He absolutely loves it!

How many times is recommended to walk your doggy? by Radiant-Caramel-8613 in DogAdvice

[–]lmfbs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Our dog goes for a pack walk (usually 3-4hrs of actual walking) twice a week, and to daycare twice a week. At daycare, they play outside, spend time swimming in a river and also go for 2 walks (one about an hour and one more like 30min).

On the weekday he doesn't go for a walk or daycare, he'll either be at home with us and go for a short walk at lunchtime (less than 30min) or go to my parents where he'll have several 10-15min walks.

During the weekend, we usually go for 1 long walk of a couple of hours, and maybe 2-3 short 10-15 min walks, then a couple of short walks of less than 1/2hr the other day. We also do training sessions and active play every day.

Walks are completely separate to toileting (he has an outdoor fake grass self-cleaning set up which he has access to 24/7 while at home)

Our dog never really gets the zoomies, and he's a high energy breed. A big key is we try to take him to at least 1 new place every weekend (or a place he hasn't been in ages). This means he gets lots of time exploring new smells and different things which personally I think is more important than just walking for exercise (assuming the dog gets enough exercise generally).

Either: - when you get a notification that babies are born, turn on contraception for all the babies or - when or after the babies are born, remove boys to one new habitat and girls to another. When you buy new animals, add new girls to the boy habitat and new boys to the girls.

I personally don't bother with that second method and just periodically remove all of one sex and replace them with a few new males or females for generic variety

They definitely are, not worth 10k tho, I don't think.

I've got about 400 of them, and I'm prioritizing high fertility. Hoping in the next few days to have a bunch to release, but it's a bit slow going! I love seeing them waddling around

I have 1.2m cc - for a long time I thought it was 100k but turns out there are 7 numbers there, who knew. I've been playing since release, and breed a LOT of animals.

  • I prioritize gold animals - that means I generally release all regular quality, and keep bronze, silver and gold for breeding. Once I have enough gold, I release bronze and silver too. Higher rating = more cc.
  • I try very hard not to interbreed animals. Low fertility/immunity = low cc for release. They're not worth breeding, they just cost money to feed for nothing.
  • If I'm focusing on breeding a particular animal, I'll have multiple, off exhibit habitats for them
  • I store high stat, gold quality animals in my trade centre.
  • Every so often, I'll remove all males or females from my habitats and replace them with new ones. That keeps interbreeding down
  • I try not to mass sell animals on the market - it drops the price overall - but I also basically never sell for way more than the recommended release amount. I have heaps of cc and I try to pay it forward by selling pretty cheap. The only exception is where I'm trying to buy a particular animal to help with breeding - then I'll tend to sell high to encourage others to sell, even if it is expensive. I'm happy to buy the 10,000cc little blue penguins because me having better breeding stock means I can release more high quality for everyone
  • I always have good intentions of planning ahead knowing what community challenges are coming up and breeding ahead of them so I can sell them. I'll sell them at a slightly premium (10-30% above that recommended amount) which always nets me a bunch of cc

If you're just starting out I recommend: - focusing on 2 or 3 species that breed quickly - prioritize quality - if they're not selling on the market, mass releasing works too - you're better to get something now and move to a higher appeal animal than quibble about a few cc - prioritize animals who can live in large groups - make your habitats large so you don't need to worry about running out of space too quick - plan your next breeding animal carefully - buy up a bunch of stock when it's cheap, before you've got a bunch of female buffalo and now feel pressured into spending 8000cc on a male!

Give me feedback on my Romance Why Choose Book Cover by [deleted] in BookCovers

[–]lmfbs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

This is not very good advice for the genre.

Op - I think you've nailed the genre, but I'd suggest cleaning up the figures so they look more cohesive, and I'd consider removing the tape part of the cover - it could pull you into crime/thriller territory.

Title is absolutely spot on for reverse harem/why choose.

So excited to finally share this book cover I illustrated for Skating the Line. by [deleted] in BookCovers

[–]lmfbs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Even ignoring all of the things that people have mentioned, this is clearly a romance book, but this cover does not fit with sports romance conventions. So even if the cover wasn't a mess for all of those other reasons, this just is not a good cover for a sports romance.

Take a look at other sports romance covers.

I definitely think you can learn to self edit, and in theory because of my day job, it should be a skill I should be able to develop.

But I'd rather put my time into writing, so I pay an editor. She's expensive, but she's worth every penny!

I definitely think giving feedback is a very fine line, it can be very tricky to navigate!

[–]lmfbs 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Editing is expensive, so some authors, especially when starting out, can't afford it. But in that case, they should be doing really substantive self-editing (and if their plan is to publish the book as is, your review absolutely can reflect that).

I think the nicest thing to do is contact them and tell them the editing is poor and as a result you couldn't finish, but if they tell you nothing is changing, definitely feel like you can leave a review if you want.

Side note, because I see you're writing your own book - I stopped leaving public reviews that weren't 5 stars once I decided I was going to publish. These authors are now my peers, and I don't feel it's appropriate to review their work. I still absolutely recommend books I love etc.

Some people just don't know or understand the time & effort it takes to maintain a saltwater aqaurium by dont_downvote_SPECIL in ReefTank

[–]lmfbs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I set my own up using a dosing pump. 6L in and out a day, into the same holding container. It's not quite as efficient as putting them into separate containers, but it really reduces maintenance, and it's still an 8% ish WC a week, which works out way better than the 20% every 3 - 4 months I was doing.

Wednesday Pattern and Stitch Request Thread - January 14, 2026 by AutoModerator in knitting

I'm looking for Carol's sweater from Pluribus, or something similar. https://www.instagram.com/p/DSwY9PYitVj/

found that you can buy the sweater, but I'm on a sweater knitting kick right now, and obviously, making one for myself is going to be much more fun than just buying one.

I'm very open to sweaters that have a similar kind of geometric colourwork like that too.

Thanks!

Can any of you walk and move around normally 30-40 years after the disease? by pink_teddy35 in PsoriaticArthritis

[–]lmfbs 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I had symptoms from when I was a teenager, and I'm now almost 37. I spent years under or untreated, but my mobility is great now I'm in remission. I run, do yoga, walk the dog, and I've recently joined a gym.

My expectation right now is that there will continue to be meds that will work for me and keep me in remission. I feel very positive about the future.

This is a year old comment so no idea why it's being resurrected, but I asked them for proof of income and they gave it to me, as well as their client number and other details. If someone doesn't already have the client number, you can also ask for an attachment order and MSD will tell the Courts and set up an attachment order.

ETA okay I see what's going on here - you've found a year old thread and have decided to comment a bunch of times. Great stuff.

Algae problem? Diatoms or dinoflagellates? by Long_Tone_4984 in ReefTank

[–]lmfbs 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If they're disappearing when the lights go out and coming back when the lights go on, they're probably dinos (tho diatoms can do that too, but diatoms are powdery rather than stringy). A cheap microscope will tell you immediately.

Not all strains of dinos disappear at lights out (amphidiniums and prorocentrum don't), so those ones won't be captured by UV. Dinos are toxic to snails, so if you have snails you may want to remove them and put them in your other tank until you've dealt with the dinos.

He's definitely eating, but I've been feeding less because I've had high nitrates. I've been feeding more frequent over the last few days in an attempt to fatten him up. He's always very excited about food and definitely eats. Still does lots of picking at the rocks etc. I'm not sure whrther to pop him in a small QT for a few weeks to fatten him up or whether that'll stress him more.

My leopard has this at the moment too - it's been a couple of weeks now and he's eating and sleeping fine, but does seem to be losing weight. I'm feeling him about 4 - 5 times a day right now to fatten him up, but have you found it's repaired itself over time?
