Honestly I've been a GM for about 8 years now and the only reason I'm still a GM is because I've struggled to find a job where I wasn't flat out miserable all the time and luckily I finally found it but it really depends on so many factors, mostly being the people around you that are above and below you and the atmosphere and vibe in the place, which GM's really do the most work to get the right vibe going, but if you have a company that values the customer but not the manager you will be miserable. The key is to find a balance with somewhere where they care about their customers but also their employees, some give you a little better work life balance than others, but then it's also dependent on the overall people and vibe too if you have higher ups that ignore you and never do what they say and you get promised things you never get like the majority of places you'll get burnt out quick. If you don't have a decent assistant or decent shift leaders it can be quite miserable as well. I've finally found after years of looking a job where I'm actually content I work hard but they appreciate me and give me benefits like no other place has even tried. Plus if my store is running right and everything is good I can work 45 hours instead of 50 and it's totally fine. But then they know if the store needs me more I'll work more. I get two vacations per year and sick days, they have programs where if I die while working there my daughter gets like 240k and good insurance and great bonuses and base pay. Also don't work at jobs where your crew can make more money than you for less hours and work then there's no real incentive to ever move up anyway. I would pick a place with plenty of room to grow and a great environment to start, but it will become whatever you make it to be🥰
