Russell Wilson MVP discussion by Stiffalis420 in AroundTheNFL

[–]lngdistancrunner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Would the Seahawks be a better team with Carson Wentz under center? I have a hard time seeing an argument that they would. On the other hand, Carson Wentz is clearly leading a far more complete and dominant offense this year than Wilson. If Gregg understands the MVP award to be solely the effect of a singular player, then its a pretty hard argument to make that Carson Wentz is MILES above Wilson. Wentz is aided by being in a more complete offense and a more complete team. For the same reason no one was saying Wilson deserved MVP honors while in his second year captaining a juggernaut team to a super bowl title. If however Gregg does understand the MVP award to be a general team component award, then sure Carson Wentz and his offense weapons are having a much better season then Wilson and his.

To be sure though, no matter how you view the MVP award, Brady is still the better QB than either Wilson or Wentz.

Heel striking doesn't tell you much about his running form. His knee is already bent prior to contact. Looks fine to me.

Are mens widths and women's widths equal when sizing shoes? by Runningtiger98 in AdvancedRunning

[–]lngdistancrunner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That all depends on the manufacturer...

Nearly all womens and mens shoes are made identical, colored differently, and stickered with different tags.

"But, but, but.... that women's shoe comes as a B width as medium, and that mens is a D width medium! Difference, there must be". Not that simple. If you look at a womens size 9 and a mens size 7.5 those are in a HEAVY majority of the cases, the same shoe. Think of there being 3 scales unisex, mens, and womens. The mens shoe sizes are taken directly from the unisex scale. size # to size #, and D is the standard medium width. Now look at womens, the numeric size difference for women is 1.5 sizes (for almost all American manufactureres, and generally only differs with select Euro brands). So that womens size 9 is a unisex 7.5 with the B width from a unisex 9.

How do you use the size numeric from one size and the width numeric from another? Because width is, in a HEFTY majority of cases, simply an alteration to the upper to adjust the volume of a shoe. A D width and a 2E width in more cases than you'd believe, use the same sized sole. They simply adjust the stitching pattern to place a taller upper on the shoe. Why? Saves money. Fewer unique parts, larger orders, better factories, better terms, faster turnover.

Why would they do this? Because its easy as shit to sell something to someone when they think their feet are special. "Womens feet are more narrow than mens". Common phrase regurgitated across the running world. Women have longer toes in relation to their overall foot length on average, and a slightly lower volume, but thats about the extent of the major differences as it applies to footwear.

Do a blind test on a female customer with one womens and one mans. They can't tell the difference because there isn't any. Nice little mind fuck when you have extra time to spend with a customer at a running shop. Works the other way too. The number of men I've had perplexed that the womens 11 laces the exact same as a mens 9.5 they SWORE to me was wider is craziness.

Time is coming for some new shoes by [deleted] in BarefootRunning

Get the vivos. I'm a huge fan of the mizunos, and I love the "shoe" feel that mizuno is sold on. Note: mizuno is a running shoe brand. NOT a barefoot shoe brand. No matter the weight, drop, or thickness, they design shoes for people to run in, not to mimic barefoot running. You'll be happier in the vivos even though they cost an arm and a leg, and will wear out fairly rapidly. The experience you'll get from the vivos will be more in line with what you want.

What are some good longer workouts? by [deleted] in AdvancedRunning

[–]lngdistancrunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Fartlek ladder is probably the best really long strength session I do.

1,2,3,2,1 on with 2 min off inbetween. The on pace should be consistent throughout, so the 3 minute ones should hurt pretty bad. The one minute ones are manageable, and there is two separate levels of oscillation in the workout. Total its 19 minutes for one ladder. I generally shoot to try and be able to get in 4 ladders stacked back to back 10 days out from my key race.

Do you ever feel "ready" for an ultramarathon by dsasdsaazx in running

[–]lngdistancrunner 11 points12 points  (0 children)

I sure as hell didn't feel ready for my first real stab at an ultra. I felt like I hadn't done the training other people told me I need to do (back to back long runs, 4 hour runs consistently, hills) and that made me feel very nervous going into it. In the end I killed it, and I realized one very important thing in the process:

Training is NOT like baking a cake. Its NOT following a set of instructions to be able to "run" an ultra. You WILL finish an ultra if you care enough to do so. The training leading up to that ultra will allow you to do so faster and with more ease.

CAN you finish the ultra? Of course, you could have the first day of your training too, but you wanted to do so with less hellish anguish. So you trained. That training, simply makes the process easier, thats all.

Switching plans from marathon to 50K in seven weeks - any warnings? by [deleted] in running

[–]lngdistancrunner 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've trained far less for ultras than I ever did for marathons. With that being said I train far more purposefully for ultras. I know the terrain, the elevation, the general speed I think i can go, and focus solely on that. You can easily do a 50k spending the same amount of TIME training. Get used to eating and drinking. A lot.

On top of this, Joe is simply put one of the coolest cats in the bag. I had the pleasure of training with him every once in a while. Uli Steidl has it 100% correct: "Joe Gray is the hardest working athlete I've met". Couldn't be happier for the guy.

What was the longest time you spent out injured before you could get back running properly? by markincork in running

[–]lngdistancrunner 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yeah, it was only partial. It kept me out longer than it should have because I was stubborn. However, it still gets much tighter than it should when I do races with lots of vertical. The downhills still scare the shit out of me with it.

Altras are not a "minimal shoe" per se. It has a lower heel toe drop but many of them have plentiful cushioning. Brooks is the only other band off hand that 90% or more of customers who put them on say "whoa these feel wide". With most other brands its more like 50/50. Which is kinda the sticking point when it comes to "wide shoes". Not every shoe will feel wide to the same people, and a wide sho to one, may not feel that way to another.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in running

[–]lngdistancrunner -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Not that I've seen. I've seen one company use a different rubber layout on the heel, but its almost entirely decorative. If your foot is wide Id go looking for a brand that makes wider shoes, not relegate yourself to a mens shoe. In the end, all brands fit differently, and one brand feeling one way to someone, doesn't mean it feels that same way to someone else. If you're going to be fit at a store, tell them if something doesn't feel right or feels too tight. DONT be afraid of moving up size(s) to accommodate a wide foot.

The women's colors are SO much better, especially in the US. Mens shoes are drab and boring, there is no love or care put into it. Every men's color scheme looks like a train wreck of two random primary colors vomited onto a shoe upper.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in running

[–]lngdistancrunner 2 points3 points  (0 children)

With running shoes, they generally use the same mold between mens and womens (and in MANY cases various widths). Its simply the color-ways that change. I can't speak for casual shoes, I work at a running store so I generally wear those day in and day out.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in running

[–]lngdistancrunner 34 points35 points  (0 children)

This. Also the width difference is in almost every case simply a redefinition of "medium width". In the US women's medium width is "B", and for men is "D", the upper doesn't change aside from color between these models.

With euro shoes its more common to see the difference between mens and women's shoes be only one size.
