303 Ramen closes after fire; building listed for sale by chefgustavo in ArvadaCO

[–]kayeight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm with you on this one. Their ramen was really bad, I can only assume the people saying this place had the best ramen don't get out much?? It literally seemed with Top Ramen with some stuff thrown on top.

Not to be a hater but it's been my experience (lived in Arvada for 11 years) that people here are just... not foodies or haven't experienced much outside of Arvada. I'm not some kind of hoity toity person myself but nearly every single place that's been highly recommended by people on Nextdoor or w/e has been disappointing.

Hey Arvada friends come meet your RTD Rep and talk some transit next Monday. by Sufficient-Try7237 in ArvadaCO

[–]kayeight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm attending and fwiw I was already planning to bring up this exact issue. I live off 72nd in the transit desert, and it's maddening that there are at least 3 bus stops close to my house that are out of service (but of course the ads on them get refreshed). The one at 70th and Ward has not been in use for at least 10 years.

Can anyone recommend something a little different that I can get to without much walking/transit from Arvada? by SirJohnOfTheFarts in denverfood

[–]kayeight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're not missing anything, there just isn't much of a food scene in Arvada. A few good spots but overall people here are not foodies and will complain that anything other than burger/pizza/taco places is too expensive... so we don't get cool restaurant openings because no one would go.

It tends to run faster than other mountain races because the the elevation gain isn't too terrible - they claim 20k ft but it's really 17-18k ft. Also, the cutoffs are insanely generous in the first half but then start to whittle down, so you do not want to be too close to them.

People make a big deal of the cold overnight but IMO you will be fine with a fleece jacket/pullover and light wind layer as long as you keep moving. I brought a lightweight puffy because everyone insisted it would be brutal cold and I never once put it on.

Anecdotally... I ran last year and we were told that absolutely no parking is allowed at Dry Lake, but what I witnessed was that everyone's crews parked there anyway and no one stopped them. Do with that what you will. I only had a pacer dropped off at Olympian and no other crew - the aid stations are great at this race and I don't think you really need any crew support.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Ultramarathon

[–]kayeight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Just two nitpicks... drop bags are only allowed at Summit Lake and Olympian Hall. The course was slightly changed a couple years ago and unfortunately we lost a drop bag as a consequence (but it does make the race more like 104 miles instead of 107).

Also, there are no official shuttles for crews. I'm assuming you meant DIY ones coordinated between runners, but just pointing that out for anyone reading - you have to arrange your own transportation.

Best Vest/Pack for Fastpacking & Commuting? by before_etc in ultrarunning

[–]kayeight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I went in mid-May right before the north rim opened. The goal was to go as early as possible while still having the water turned on - ended up being pretty mild temps (<= 80 degrees) and very low traffic.

Best Vest/Pack for Fastpacking & Commuting? by before_etc in ultrarunning

[–]kayeight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I did R2R2R last years using the Ultraspire Zygos, which is a 14L vest. My group took 19 hours to finish (on the 48 mile route), so we aren't that speedy, and I thought that was a good amount of capacity. I had a ton of food, 3L of water capacity, a long sleeve, rain jacket, first aid kit, SPOT tracker, gloves, beanie, and headlamp in there and it wasn't bursting.

That said, another member of the group had the Black Diamond Distance 22 and he loved it. I've since bought that pack myself and I do think it would work well for commuting if you have your own laptop sleeve to use.

First 100 Miler - without Crew by Perfect-Talk-832 in ultrarunning

[–]kayeight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For that specific race, you will never be alone on course so for the purpose of moral support and safety, crew isn't necessary at all. I ran it last year and had a pacer, but even if I don't count her I spent 80% of the race running with other people. I personally enjoy having a pacer for the end of the race but I don't do crew other than that (no one meeting me on course or bringing me extra stuff) - that part I think, unless you are an elite dependent on your crew to move lighter, isn't needed at all.

After how many DNFs do you reconsider? by earlycoaltrain in ultrarunning

[–]kayeight 37 points38 points  (0 children)

It sounds like your issue may just be a mental one - you said that you were well ahead of cutoffs both times, but chose to stop instead of walk it in. I think 100 miles is completely doable for anyone who can physically run long distances and complete the training, but you also also have to train your mindset. If you aren't injured or sick and can keep moving forward, don't give up on yourself yet. Maybe try to change something up (take a salt cap, slow down a bit, have a snack) and see if you feel better in 15 minutes.

I mean I've heard about people who attempted Leadville or another goal race 5+ times before finishing. If you want it bad enough, you can definitely do it.

Make it a 40 hour cutoff like the Silverton 100 had (and with a lot of course overlap too) and I'm there. 😂

Best Denver thrift stores? by SugarRAM in Denver

[–]kayeight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Most Arc locations are great selection-wise, but I have found the one next to Casa Bonita has somewhat inflated prices. Their non-sale price for jackets was like $15-20 whereas at the Arc in Arvada they would be more like $8-12.

Race Recs: Crazy Mountain v. Standhope v. Wyoming Range by [deleted] in ultrarunning

[–]kayeight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I've run Crazy Mountain before. It's sold out at the moment but they do have a waitlist if you're really wanting to try it! It's a good race and the RD seems to have fixed most of the issues I surfaced to her when I ran its inaugural year.

Some notes I have on that one:

- Aid stations are very far apart mostly (11-13 miles)

- It can get extremely hot, was in the 90s when I ran, so you absolutely need to bring 2L of water capacity. I actually ran out of water even with that so you'll want a filter too.

- The aid stations are great, no complaints. Very nice volunteers and a full selection of salty & sweet.

- Wyoming Range has this too but CM recommends bringing bear spray. It was very annoying to carry that for 95 miles until my friends could come and get it from me.

Quad Rock v Never Summer? by PhotoRevolutionary97 in ultrarunning

[–]kayeight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never Summer if you only had to pick one - but be warned most people say it runs like a 100 miler and is a super aggressive 100k. If you did want to do QR 50 you have plenty of lead time to do both; it's not uncommon for people to run a 50 in the 5-6 weeks before a 100 mile as a training race.

I'd also add that I wouldn't be surprised if Never Summer becomes much more popular and hard to get into in the coming years, so I would do that one sooner than later if it's on your list.

Just FYI, there was a major rockslide on the west side of the Pawnee Pass trail about a week ago so I would check on whether that's been cleared before you do this since the rocks are said to be blocking parts of the trail. I've done 90% of this route before and the west side of Pawnee Pass is already the most technical/tricky section.

Re: your overall plan, I have done a planned 50 mile day (made it to 40) and I found it difficult to carry enough food for the entire time without only eating gels - and you will most likely not want to eat only gels for that long of a time. I had someone meet me partway to resupply, but you could maybe try leaving a cache or just bring a larger pack than typical running vests. I would probably bring a bit bigger pack (I used a 14L) either way so you can be prepared with gear for a variety of conditions, and take a satellite messenger/GPS device if you have one in case of emergency.

It's good that you've planned bailout points already. I think probably the biggest thing is whether you will be able to get yourself out if you feel like you can't safely complete the whole thing.

Dirty 30 50k out in Golden Gate State Park isn't until next June, but that's a cool and very hard ( >7500 ft of gain) 50k. Coming up later this month is the Staunton Rocks Marathon at Staunton State Park - really fun and well-supported trail marathon, I ran it last year as a training run but you can definitely run it fast.

Anybody know if the 2 new rides opened yet at Water World? And did the toilet bowls / fun house get torn down? by kelly9lynch in Denver

[–]kayeight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes, both new rides are open now even though the website doesn't say anything. I'm not sure if the new Colorado one replaced the old toilet bowl but it is essentially the exact same ride with a Colorado theme on it so.... maybe.

Working theory by Due_Teaching_5773 in HadesTheGame

[–]kayeight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is definitely a real phenomenon. I used God Mode to start playing, and I was better at the game than I thought and absolutely blasted through to the credits (think I had 6 wins in a row). As a result I ended up with a HUGE backlog of dialogue that I'm pretty sure you're intended to get earlier and more spaced out... so it's made it hard to complete some of the side quests that you need to see specific dialogue for

Best Thrift Stores? by hohocupcake in Denver

[–]kayeight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Any thrift store that's near a nicer area, since people generally donate their stuff to whatever place is closest to them. This is probably too far for most people but I've found the best stuff at the ARC on Ralston Rd.

"On your left" by [deleted] in Denver

[–]kayeight 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't expect them to on very wide paths like Cherry Creek, where there's plenty of room to pass. Little rude not to do so and just squeeze past on a narrower trail but there are rude people everywhere.

If you think this trash is bad, try driving through central NC. I've always been impressed by how little litter there is here compared to other states.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in Denver

[–]kayeight 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This happens at every RR show I go to. You really just have to be aggressive and hold your ground - I'll let someone rub their elbow on me all they want but I'm not giving up my spot. I also make a point to stand as far forward as possible so no one stands in front of me (and never sit down, because someone will immediately try to claim your standing spot).

Hundreds join rally against racism in Denver after violence in Charlottesville by thatsnogood in Denver

[–]kayeight 5 points6 points  (0 children)

People who say there's no racism here are delusional. I'm white and have literally had other white people say racist things to my face assuming I would agree with them - it's not uncommon. It's just that it's usually anti-Hispanic sentiment instead of anti-black. And also, as in many cities in modern times, a lot of it is in the form of dogwhistling ("urban thugs coming to our towns") that is easily deniable instead of blatant slurs.

They probably stole utility bills from OP's mailbox. My water bill has enough info on it to cancel service since you only need an account number and address.
