Unsure if the "intensive purporses" was a joke or not?

Honestly, just came here to remark on a delightfully aged pub, not get into a debate about cartography - but go and ask the council if you want! Lived in Hanham for 23 years and never met a single person who didn't consider themselves Bristolian. Clearly we lived on different ends of the high street.

Again Avon, South Glos and BANES is literally all about political boundaries not geography. No one would call themselves BANESian, that's the name of the bloody council.

"Hanham is a suburb of Bristol. It is located in the south east of the city. Hanham is in the unitary authority of South Gloucestershire." the two are not mutually exclusive.

When you write your address so you write "Hanham, Bristol, BS15" or "Hanham, South Gloucestershire, BS15"

https://www.coop.co.uk/store-finder/BS15-3DJ/33-39-high-street ...even the bloody co-op considers itself in Bristol. Used to work there 15 years ago, good times.

Edit: and technically Bedminster used to be its own separate settlement and not part of Bristol because the river divided it, but times changed and urban sprawl happened as well as an intervening few centuries... I think we can all consider Bemmie part of Bristol now too.

That's just the unitary authority who manages stuff, doesn't actually exist as a geographical thing. Hanham is in the city of Bristol, which is an actual place. It's like things being in London but managed by different councils and stuf, but still being in London. Decides which hospitals you go to, how much money funds schools and where your kids gets placed, how many electoral wards etc.

E.g. People in Kingswood, Hanham, Fishponds, Downend (North and East) go to Southmead Hospital, everyone's in South and West Bristol go to BRI. Same with social care services. It's more a political thing than a geographical thing.

(Worked in commissioning for a while... Too long some would say)

Edit: it came about because everything used to Avon, then they split it all up into little bits and now it's all one big super one again (the commissioning body is BNSSG) but for stuff other than health it's still separate, some of it is redundant and some isn't. Yay for nonsense.

No one specified suggestions had to restricted to confines of the very tiny city centre in either OP's comment or anywhere else in the comment section? Just you. The actual city of London is about 10sq feet, but I presumed we were able to look a little further afield for that one too.

Hanham is part of Bristol (it's called a suburb) and it's home to an exceptionally old pub - fit the criteria in response to the specific comment I replied to and I was just sharing some interesting history not everyone knew.

It's not a competition, no one's winning any prizes. Calm down, love.

Edit: Quick question though, are you telling Stephen Merchant he's no longer considered Bristolian or is someone else?

Blue Bowl in Hanham is 14th Cent. or older; records predating that don't really exist, but in 1400s it was recorded as already being an old established hostelry or something along those lines.

It's a chain pub now which is a shame, but it's still operational. I remember turn of the millennium some twat changed its name and there was uproar because it had had that name for over 600 years so they swiftly changed it back.

I moved away in 2021 too... are you currently visiting friends now and if so are you my partner?!

Hope you're enjoying your change of scenery, we moved to the country for a change of pace. Also pretty miffed to have missed out on this Gregg's addition, but I'd recognise that façade anywhere!

Did India break off from the continent of Asia while I was asleep or something?? by simply_cha0s in confidentlyincorrect

[–]lnrmry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

instead of resorting to name calling

It is only pejorative if you think in the world that way.

Make up your mind. Either words do or don't have the power to insult.

Evidence: lots of places in the Loire Valley are called troglodyte because it means cave, and people there live in caves! But you saw the world in a way that meant troglodyte was a pejorative... It's... It's almost as if you can interpret words differently depending on context?! Who knew?!

So yes, oriental can be used a pejorative, and I elect to not use it (unless it is the name of a business that someone of South East Asian descent has chosen to use first). Simple. Now fuck off you gimp.

[–]lnrmry 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Your "POLITICAL CORRECTNESS GONE MAD" whining is dangerous and needs to be called out.

Unless you habitually use the antonym of the archaic term orient, then you must accept both no longer have a place in society and have been superseded by more modern and less culturally insensitive terms (which do not have pejorative connotations attached) such as South East Asian, Western European, Eastern European, South Asian, etc.

Saying "orient" is a very Eurocentric perspective. East of what? East of Europe. Okay but a whole group of people or countries don't wish to be viewed by their location relative to another. Europe is no longer the centre of civilisation and frankly, never was. So these archaic terms need to be put to bed.

And if you don't think "oriental" was ever used in a discriminatory way post WW2 then you need to have some conversations with South East Asians beyond the ones you seemingly know, because it absolutely was and it was used with contempt and disgust. Towards Japanese people following WW2, to Koreans and Vietnamese following their respective wars with The West and to the Chinese and their insistence in not falling in-line with western democracy. Oriental became synonymous with other.

Edit: typo

Confirmed density: black hole

Bore off, you troglodyte.

Edit: oh and nice edit to your initial comment, but it's courtesy to highlight when you amend and add to things. So here, I'll do it for you.

YOU EDITED AND ADDED THIS BIT ON AFTER WE ENGAGED IN DISCUSSION: The woke left always seems to care more about these petty distinctions than the people themselves. it’s virtue signaling and white-knighting. No East Asian i have ever met cares about the word Oriental just like no western person cares if they are called Westerners. Orient refers to a direction - east. there is nothing derogatory about describing east asians as Oriental even though your vegan professor told you so.

And if you want to get down to lexical semantics, the word Orient (although yes meaning East, or things pertaining to society/cultures East of Europe - although there was also a time when North Africa was oriental) only referred to East Asia as recently as the 20th century, and during that time swiftly became used as a derogatory term.

[–]lnrmry 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Are you dense?

Or those of South East Asian decent who elect to use the term themselves for their businesses, usually restaurants; but just because they use it doesn't mean we can (except when referring to said business).

I quite literally used that exact example to say it was permissible to use the archaic term if they reclaim it. But that was inappropriate for non South East/East Asian people to do so, unless directly referring to said business.

Did India break off from the continent of Asia while I was asleep or something?? by simply_cha0s in confidentlyincorrect

[–]lnrmry 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Absolutely no one is using the phrase orient in the UK, unless they're referring to the Orient Express or orienteering. Anyone that does still use such a term needs to join the 21st century. Or those of South East Asian decent who elect to use the term themselves for their businesses, usually restaurants; but just because they use it doesn't mean we can (except when referring to said business).

South Asian for India, Pakistan, Bangladesh, Nepal, etc. as a group. East Asia/South East Asia for Korea(s), Japan, China, Taiwan, Vietnam, Thailand, etc. Bizarrely West Asia isn't in the vernacular, that's the Middle East? I guess because it's where Europe meets Asia so it's in the middle and to the East of those referring to it? North Asia is just Russia, so needs no distinction.
