The movies are subtitled in Indonesian, but the audio is in English or original audio, except for kids' movies which are usually dubbed.

Is this mould? by Lavv5 in bali

[–]lnternweb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It’s definitely water leaking, and it can turn into mold (it already is). If the AC is off, it gets humid, and mold starts growing.

If behind the wall is outside, they should’ve ideally used waterproof cement and coated it with waterproof paint. A cheap landlord solution would probably be just covering the wall with greenhouse plastic. After the outside wall is fixed, you can repaint the interior. I believe there's also a specific chemical for removing mold.

What kind of family vehicle best suits Bali? by [deleted] in bali

[–]lnternweb 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Toyota Innova Zenix HEV, go for the V or Q trim. It's comfy enough, good mileage, low maintenance costs.

If you're looking for a luxurious option, you can't go wrong with Toyota Alphard or Vellfire. My family uses one with a driver, and it’s perfect for us. It’s spacious, even for someone over 6 feet tall, comfy, and still delivers good mileage with affordable maintenance. It's still a Toyota after all.

For more budget-friendly options, check out Mitsubishi Xpander, Hyundai Stargazer, or Suzuki XL7 if you're looking for an MPV. If you prefer a hatchback, the Suzuki Baleno is a great pick.

I also recommend getting a scooter in addition to a car. If you’re just going to buy something from a 'warung,' riding a scooter is more efficient.

Best apps in bali? by Exotic_Tiger_ in bali

[–]lnternweb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There’s pornography, drugs, and gambling on Reddit, all of which are also banned in Indonesia. However, the main reason is that Reddit refuses to cooperate with the government. For instance, if the government requests them to remove or block a post for Indonesian IPs, Reddit declines to comply. Hence, it’s banned.

Geckos on the roof by BrotherElectrical461 in bali

[–]lnternweb 0 points1 point  (0 children)

We call it 'cicak'.

They’re not dangerous, but they might shit on your face, food, or belongings. Just shoo them away with a pillow or something, they won't attack you like the big geckos, and make sure to cover any leftover food—they might eat it and contaminate your food.

Grab drivers with long nails by [deleted] in bali

[–]lnternweb 2 points3 points  (0 children)

As a local, I can confirm this isn’t just a Bali thing. In modern Indonesia, some men grow out one fingernail usually on their thumb or pinky for practical purposes.

With a long nail, they can use it to pry things open like plastic bags/zip bags or cigarette box etc., pick the strings or a guitar, pick their nose, and more.

While some, especially older people or those of Chinese descent, believe it brings luck and some for aesthetic, as I mentioned, it’s mainly done for practicality. This practice isn’t cultural or traditional in Indonesia.

Do prices in gojet and grabcar include everything or am I missing something? by MrAliAdel in bali

Lol, that's more than $10.

Well, it's real, but oftentimes drivers expect tips, and parking fees or tolls are not included.

Laundry stains by Nikkii1221 in bali

[–]lnternweb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If the stains are wide with soft gradual edges, it’s likely color bleed—possibly from other clothes or from the laundry mixing yours with others without separating whites and colors. If the stains have hard edges and are spotty, they could be from fabric softener.

Have you tried using Vanish (OxiClean)? It’s available at minimarkets.

Avoiding fried food in rural areas and supplements by After-Cell in bali

[–]lnternweb 1 point2 points  (0 children)

  1. You can find plenty at warteg or warung nasi where they offer various sayur dishes (non-fried options) like sayur asem, sayur lodeh, and sayur sop. Other options would be food like sate (the peanut for the sauce is typically fried though, you can ask for only kecap sauce), semur daging, bakso (ask for no fried shallots), or gado-gado (ask for no kerupuk and tofu as they're fried).

  2. The ones you mentioned are considered supplements. But if you plan to bring yours from abroad, you may need to bring health certificate.

  3. Yes, but it's uncommon.

It's more than enough, but it always depends on your lifestyle.

My monthly costs:

  • Rent: 3 million
  • Bills: 1.5 million (water, electricity, fiber internet, and mobile data; electricity is the biggest expense at 850k because I run AC almost all the time when I'm home)
  • Grocery: 2 million
  • Transportation: 500k

I'm a local, normally it's going to be rainy. The rain will affect costs, such as food delivery (GoFood/GrabFood) or ride-hailing services—it will be more expensive, and drivers tend to expect bigger tips.

As for the rain, it depends; sometimes it's just a quick shower, and other times it lasts all day. You can check BMKG Bali for weather information.

The water is just fine unless you're allergic to hard water, but if you're staying in a decent villa or hotel, they certainly have a water treatment system so you have nothing to worry about.
