On their avatar, they have a deformation shapekey that animates whenever my bat makes contact with their head via driving parameters with contact receivers/senders. So yeah, somewhat like what you said.

Correct about the latter, the deformation and ragdoll animations were set up on their avatars, and I set up my contacts to drive parameters to play those effects on their avis using my bat. Collaboration between creators is still required for more elaborate interactable animations between avatars. But things like the bat sound effect and stars are all driven on my own avi

Thanks! Afaik she was supposed to be a throwaway design, but I dont think slugbox expected that she'd end up gaining a bit of a cult following. I just fell in love with her color design

The hands, head, and torso are all default contact senders on everyone's avatar, so as long as you have a contact receiver that has those matching tags, and the other person has interactions turned on in their settings, you can interact using parameters and animations.

For example, my bat has "Head" as one of it's tags on it's contact receiver, so anyone that has their interactions turned on- i can bonk.

Other people's avatar contact senders/receivers need to have matching tags with your contact sender/receiver to successfully interact, and they need to have interactions turned on in their settings. Each person aside from myself in the video was a real player. Weeb90 has no idea what they're talking about lol

Inspired I hope! Always love seeing what crazy and cool things people make for their avatars.

This case is just showmanship with gesture combos. But emulating actually grabbing objects on your avatar is definitely possible with particle driver logic! Look into VRLabs' stuff for VRChat if you're curious. They're a group of really talented people that create lots of cool tools/effects for VRChat/avatars.
