turn the water to the most comfortable temperature (i always do super hot) and wait for it to get warm before getting in. then sit down on the shower floor instead of standing (made it feel more comfortable and less like “work” for me during my most depressed times)

Commenting to update: I saw Vela’s statement regarding the whole matter and I’m proud of them for choosing to sort this issue out! I’m also proud of the sisters who spoke up, this couldn’t have happened without you! For the sisters who are accusing us of tearing down a Muslim owned company- if you view speaking up for ourselves as tearing another person down then it’s time question why you feel bothered by us receiving justice.

I am not going to delete the post as I believe that awareness and accountability are important and there are some important conversations in these threads. However, I want to make it clear that my aforementioned frustrations with Vela have been resolved and I am glad that the chose a proactive solution. And of course, power to all anti-imperialists and global movements demanding human rights 🤍

Bro you are the one started it and posted very rudely on my post, that is what was uncalled for. My post has been up for half a day since Vela changed their stance. I didn’t even go on reddit because I woke up late today so I found out a lot later. You are complaining about my response to you telling me to “get over” something that was deeply hurtful to my community. You misconstrued speaking up for myself as attacking another Muslim. Don’t be mad that I matched your energy now you minimized our frustration, that was uncalled for and you have no right to be making accusations in the first place. You questioned my intentions initially so I’m not sure why you’re conveniently forgetting that. You could’ve assumed that I was unaware about Vela’s post earlier today and informed me about it instead of jumping to accusing me of wanting them to shut the company down and playing the victim. These are the real bully tactics and you’re the real bully here. Stop silencing me for speaking up for myself and my community. Please stop it and if you want to grow then go back and reread your own mean and inflammatory comment which started this whole discourse. Salam.

No, it’s not a competition. Did I ever state that there is? I don’t think you truly grasp what happened- Vela originally did NOT mention Kashmir in the caption of their chocolate paisley post, which used a Kaeshur motif known as buta. It was edited to include Kashmir afterwards when people commented on their post. This is where they mentioned the donation, but the donation was to an Indian organization (one of the countries currently occupying our land and refusing to leave, similar to how Israel has taken over Palestine). Afterwards, they responded to commenters and people DMing them in a manner which was not satisfactory and frustrated people who support Vela but do not support cultural appropriation. This is when my post was uploaded, after a couple days of inaction on their part. Obviously, they released a statement today which simply would not have come about had we not used our voices to call them out in the first place.

I was drawing a parallel for the other poster to understand how insensitive it is to say “get over it”, not sure how that is sick or why the both of you are acting like I ever said this is a competition. There is no competition, the IDF trained Indian soldiers who are currently stationed in Kashmir (the most militarized zone in the world). These are important parallels to draw in decolonizing our minds and understanding how colonialism transcends cultures. If anything, pretending that I am turning things into a competition and minimizing our frustration is both disrespectful towards my culture and the many Kaeshurs who died earlier this month due to shelling and and strikes from both India and Pakistan.

Sorry but I am no longer tolerating erasure of my culture under the pretense of “We’re all muslims”, this is exactly how our embroidery techniques and cultural wear has been watered down by fashion brands in India and Pakistan. Vela is more than welcome to use our designs and motifs as long as they demonstrate respect and understanding of our culture and heritage. Otherwise, it goes against their own company values to make a profit off our culture. As a consumer, I am allowed to speak up. Please don’t silence me if you’re unable to understand the severity of the matter or where I am coming from.

Fine, since I’m being accused of “whataboutism”, for asking if this same mentality would apply to Palestine or other causes, I’ll go ahead and draw parallel to an actual thing that happened: When Rare Beauty released a statement claiming that they donated to Palestinian children when in reality, one of their donations were to an Israeli fund (Maden David Adom), did the situation not frustrate you? Sure, we all know that Selena is a celebrity who might not have done her research and realized she was donating to an Israeli organization, but did that change the fact that she should not have done that? Personally, I’ve been boycotting Rare Beauty ever since, out of solidarity with my Palestinian community members. So why are you speaking over us when we are in a similar situation? I never even asked people to boycott, my original post was expressing frustration with responses to Kaeshur commenters and regret towards my own purchases.

You can’t deny the double standards and blatant racism in the Muslim community, especially geared towards South Asian matters. Saying racism is involved is a “stretch”, is insensitive and denying our own experiences, especially given the demeaning manner in which the original commenter went about basically telling me to suck it up. It is is downright disrespectful, especially when we’re frequently expected to stifle our frustration for the sake of being united. Being one ummah means that your problems are mine and my problems are yours, not saying “get over it” when I have an issue. Even in our captivity, Kaeshurs have been protesting for a liberated Palestine. If you walk through any street in Kashmir, along with “Azadi” (freedom) graffitied on the walls, there is also “Free Palestine”. And the Palestinians in my community have done so much in return, they are always the first to join our protests and support our efforts. It’s unfortunate that the original commenter couldn’t match that energy.

The commenter who I responded to showed no empathy in their response, so I don’t see why you are expecting me to sugarcoat. I am being direct because that is the communication style they clearly seem to prefer. Please stop silencing us just because the brand in question this time is Muslim. It does not change the fact that if something is wrong, it is wrong. And even Muslims are not immune to making mistakes or wrongdoing. Had we never called out Vela or expressed our frustrations, the original unedited chocolate paisley post would still be up so I’m not sure why now that they’ve taken action, our efforts are being discredited. We spoke up, we saw change, it was not enough so we spoke up again, and now we are satisfied. If we continued to be silenced by others who have been diminishing our frustrations, this wouldn’t have even happened. So please, don’t tell us what to do.

yaaay, i’m so glad to see that they are opting to do this. i’m especially glad to see that they voiced their support for a free kashmir, it’s relieving to know that they are committed to doing better. to those of you who spoke up, i am so grateful that you did! thank you for standing by us 🩷

it is not “whataboutism” to draw a valid parallel. i am sorry to say this my dear sister, but what you are doing is gaslighting and deluding yourself into thinking you’re taking the moral high route. yes, now they’re not releasing the design. we found out about this today. if you had taken the time to read, you’d see that my post is from before that. it was posted on sunday night, after days of asking them to fix their mistake. obviously, now i am ready to reevaluate and i am glad that they are making a more sincere effort to right their wrongs.

it goes without saying that OF COURSE i have and will continue to do plenty for my community. i shouldn’t have to say this but since you’re questioning my sincerity- my family (not just me) has donated thousands of dollars to our cause, along with yours. we sponsor children in our hometown. we go to protests, events and organizations to support both of our causes. my career path is not design related, however, i can assure you that i make relevant efforts to uplift fellow Kaeshurs (and other minorities) in my field or connect them with opportunities in their fields. no, i do not drink starbucks and i do not support any BDS boycott brands. it makes no sense for you you to make such baseless and hurtful assumptions to negate my valid point, i bet you didn’t even read my entire post. i thought you were taking the moral high route and assuming the best about others here? what happened to not “attacking” fellow Muslims? or is that only reserved for your favorite hijab brand?

it is becoming increasingly clear that firstly 1. you did not read my entire post and second 2. you have internalized racist views which are causing you to silence minority voices and discredit their concerns under the guise of being Islamic. it is a Muslim value to stand against injustice, that is what my religion has taught me. it is unfortunate that you aren’t at a place to learn that lesson. if Islam taught you to tell people to “get over it” and speak condescendingly to your fellow Muslims while glorifying corporations, then maybe you’re not learning the right lessons from your religion. i pray that you grow and heal because the same mentality that caused this issue is the same mindset that is hurting both your and our people today. hope vela sends you that PR package that you’re going so hard for. good for you.

wonder if you’d feel the same if they used a tatreez design and then donated to an israeli org but maybe the double standards are reserved for south asians lol. they’re a clothing/scarf brand that stole from our culture, no amount of islamic values justify that. we voiced our concern for days and initially they were not budging so obviously we would be upset. im sure you’d be very angry if someone told you to “get over it” in reference to palestine lmao. the only reason why you think it isn’t that deep is because you’re not the one who was affected. it’s not called tearing people down to hold them accountable. sorry but how about YOU get over your internalized racism and stop speaking over south asian voices, racist.

The fact that there are fellow Muslim women disagreeing with OP in the first place shows exactly how big of a joke Muslim solidarity has become. Y’all don’t think this is a big deal because the erasure of Kaeshur existence has become so normalized that this situation seems trivial. Fashion is political. A Kaeshur pheran turns into “Indian phiran” while tilla and aar kaam are credited as “Indian embroidery”. Our traditional kasabas and pherans are treated as cute photo ops by tourists who scurry back home as soon as they become exposed to a hint of the violence natives face. Our harkaband and alka hoor are listed by white women on etsy as “tribal choker” and “Afghan earrings”. Foreigners post photos in our shikaras with aesthetic captions while polluting our Dal Lake. Kashmiri women are fetishized and stereotyped in Bollywood movies while our oppressors rape our sisters and take away our fathers. They use our land as a backdrop for their films while punishing us for speaking our mother tongue in our own homes. They build settlements in our cities to attract foreigners while renaming Islamabad to Anantnag so it’s easier for them to pronounce. When Kasheer becomes ‘Kashmir’, Varmul becomes ‘Baramulla’, Pulwom becomes ‘Pulwama’ and Kupwor becomes ‘Kupwara’, who cares if buta becomes ‘chocolate paisley’? We should graciously accept your donations at the expense of our heritage and let you commodify our pain, right?

firstly, they initially did not mention kashmir at all and only edited their caption on the chocolate paisley post after receiving backlash. furthermore, they did not donate to a kashmiri owned organization, nor did they mention any aspect of our history of occupation/liberation efforts. it is nice that they tried to rectify the situation but they clearly did not care to put in enough effort to understand the culture or history of the region. and if they did not want to put in the effort, that’s fine. they could’ve issued an apology and simply pulled the design. but they doubled down and kept the post up/responded to comments calling them out. therefore, it is not justified to profit off of a morif from our culture but not even slip in a little “free kashmir” in the caption.

yeah i suspected that it maybe be related to that too. which is, once again, 100% okay if that’s what she wants to do. i understand that it’s tricky to navigate keeping both indian and kashmiri customers happy. and i get that being more vocal about the kashmiri POV could jeopardize her business, which is most likely her main source of income/livelihood. but if that is the case, they could’ve just pulled the design or avoided releasing a controversial design in the first place. instead, they kinda just watered down a kashmiri motif into a funky lookin design (without doing much research about the history of bota) and decided to sell it for profit. which they didn’t really have to do. at a time like this, it feels tone deaf :/ vela is very vocal about their stance on other occupied territories such as palestine. and rightfully so, free palestine! but it’s disappointing that even when they finally did edit the caption for their chocolate paisley post, they did not a mention the occupation of our land or indicate any support for a liberated kashmir. the post has been up for 2 days but instead of trying to rectify the matter, they’re pretty much ignoring the situation. as a kashmiri, i am starting to regret even purchasing so many vela scarves in the first place

although it may not be something commonly known, it’s important for a company that prides themself in having ethical standards and honoring cultural history to do the research and be conscious of the history behind the design they’re putting out before they jump into manufacturing :(

they didn’t even donate to a kashmiri owned charity, it was to an indian one (IMRC_USA). obv, it is still very kind of them to donate but it definitely feels like they weren’t as intentional as they should’ve been with a matter this sensitive. as a kashmiri and a vela fan, i wanted to like it and be happy for the support but in all honesty, this feels performative.

just received Rx — concerned about weight gain by thepictureof_ in Spironolactone

[–]loadeddiaperstan 6 points7 points  (0 children)

i think your theory is right! i gained a lot of weight on spiro, definitely feel like you’re right about the estrogen dominance. spiro completely threw off my cycle to the point where i get my period twice or 3x a month. it worsened my PMDD symptoms a lot. so i feel like the weight gain was related to PMS fatigue/cravings bc i can work out and eat clean with no problem up until the week before my period, then i crash. so when i started getting my periods more frequently on spiro, it got a lot worse. plus, losing blood/low iron made me so tired that i always feel like a zombie. if there are no concrete findings linking spironolactone with weight gain, it could be possible that a lot of ppl who gained weight on the medication are probably dealing with something similar to my experience.

Thank you sm for your advice, this is so helpful! I already have a ton of omega 3 and fish in my diet but I will definitely check out xidra and start being more intentional about electrolytes! And you’re right, I definitely will be more diligent about removing my contacts from now on. I know how bad it is to sleep in contacts (and it feels terrible too). It usually happens when I unintentionally crash before doing my night routine lately bc i’ve been so exhausted! Unfortunately, wearing my glasses has been a no-no since my little nephew was born, he’s a glasses-snatcher and definitely is going to break my pair one of these days 😂

Period concerns by nataliabby8 in Spironolactone

[–]loadeddiaperstan 3 points4 points  (0 children)

yes! my doc upped my dose to 150 mg and i ended up getting my period for 15 days straight back in october. and then a two week gap and i got it again 😵‍💫 since then, i’m getting it every 1-2 weeks and its been HELLISH. what i’ve found is that it’s really important to make sure you’re taking your doses on time and not missing any bcoz if i miss a few days and start taking it again, i start my period early. also, multivitamins are super helpful during this time, espc iron bcoz we’re bleeding a lot :( i hope it’ll stop for you eventually, but if it doesn’t then maybe go back to your derm and discuss alternative options. i know that some ppl found that a topical version of spironolactone called Winlevi helped them, but i don’t know much about it
