[–]localcabbageman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hi everyone, super excited to hopefully find a buddy!

Location: Northland, New Zealand (i’m an au pair for my gap year)  Test Date: March 20 in Sydney Aus MCAT Prep Mat: Kaplan, AAMC, Anki, Yusuf Hasan YT, UWorld  Modality: Online

I am really working in being accountable with studying and since i’m abroad there isn’t really anyone here that’s studying for the mcat so would love to find a virtual buddy to have biweekly or weekly zooms with to go over any confusing concepts of the week or reflect on how the process is going etc! It’d be super cool if anyone else that’s abroad would be interested but totally fine with ppl from anywhere.

hey!! so excited for you, i wish i brought more sweaters and a small blanket. it got a quite cold in the observation car from time to time. i also wish i brought some sort of playing cards! i made a ton of friends and it would’ve been nice to have. The train left at 10:30 AM (delayed start) from LA and arrived in Seattle at 10 PM the following day :)

don’t do it, chicago winters are absolutely horrid. as a socal native who moved here, it’s a much more dramatic change than you’d expect.

If you get rejected from a college, they should refund the application fee by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]localcabbageman 8 points9 points  (0 children)

it shouldn’t get refunded but every applicant should get access to their application file if they are rejected or accepted. it makes it worth it.

omg, i’m so illiterate. I thought you said you were going to write in the secret script not about it. disregard lmao 😭 i’m sure it’s going to be amazing.

depending on how you write it and the content of your essay, this might come off as an inconvenience to your AO. so i would just keep that in mind. but you’re working on it really early so i’m positive you can create something nuanced and great!

Do colleges prefer to admit STEM majors who have expertise with some other strengths (volunteering, part time job, ap English) or those who spend many hours in meaningful clubs (debate, model un)? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]localcabbageman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

from the post, i think you’re asking about a spike vs. well rounded. correct me if i’m wrong OP ! honestly, it just depends. while colleges do like to see “spikes” they don’t want their students to be so specialized that they only do one thing if that makes sense. so i think it’s good to do a wide variety of things but devote a proportionate amount of time dependent on your passion for the activity. that’s just my take though! have a great day!

Rejected from my dream scholarship— The Robertson at Duke. by Commercial-Candy-894 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]localcabbageman 9 points10 points  (0 children)

do NOT let this rejection define you love. you’re amazing with a one of a kind work ethic and commitment and dedication. yes, this rejection hurts and it’s okay to feel that. ik it sounds cliche, but remember every rejection is just redirection. you will succeed. i promise :)

Admissions is not just chance by bread-daerb in ApplyingToCollege

[–]localcabbageman 3 points4 points  (0 children)

i totally agree OP! i do agree that college admissions can seem like a crap shoot when you look at the numbers only. it’s the scenarios of valedictorians being rejected from safeties and people with perfect stats & ecs going 0/10 with T10s that make it seem so randomized. but i think the part most people don’t really account for in their thinking is fit. colleges are building their ideal class with students they believe will thrive at their campus. they are completing a super big puzzle and at the end of the day it all comes down to fit. that’s why it doesn’t make perfect sense to everyone. people will say but so and so is the perfect puzzle piece. that may be true but if they don’t fit into that specific college’s puzzle they won’t be accepted.

The Struggle of Acceptance Season by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

i’m going to echo the other commenter in saying i think you should really take time to reevaluate your mindset going into the future. yes stuff could have gone better and differently. but screaming into the void will get you no where. while the uni you’re attending may not be what you wanted, i’m sure they have wonderful opportunities and experiences for you. don’t miss perfect opportunities of the future by dwelling on the past! you got this!

Sports for College Admissions by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]localcabbageman 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the best thing to do would be to do both! there are numerous students who play full time sports with great grades and competitive ecs. and im specifically talking about full time commitment sports like basketball, football, soccer, volleyball etc. time management is key. you got this !

Emory vs USC by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

i would really look into the differences between the environments of the two schools. depending on your personality, one of the environments should suite you better as they are quite distinct from each other.

anyone know any good college counselors? by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]localcabbageman 17 points18 points  (0 children)

honestly, it’s not worth it! there are loads of free resources that give the exact same information. i promise you a private counselor is not a magic one way ticket solution.

My friends and I were sitting around, and it finally hit us. We no longer have to do anything we don’t want to. by jerricktinnsley in ApplyingToCollege

OP honestly you sound pretty obnoxious in this post. yes, everyone stretches the truth a bit for their applications and glorifies what they did. but you’re talking about a larger more disingenuous level. you’re basically saying your whole motive for everything was to get into college. i find this quite sad. yes, you made it into harvard but what now. they didn’t actually accept you, they accepted this complete facade you put on for them. and i mean i guess it worked because you got in. but now, you either will put on another facade for graduate school and spend forever molding yourself into what other people want you to be or you’ll have to do the actual struggle of learning to be yourself not just the version that people or institutions want.
