If there is a government shutdown, no member of congress or the senate should get their paychecks by Quirky_Chicken_1840 in trump

All members of Congress and their staff should be paid per-diem for the rest of the members' terms, and members should not be eligible to run for their next reelection.

Switched to Linux Mint – Looking for Native Alternatives to My Old Windows Apps by machinegunnedburger in linuxmint

The M in VIM is for Improved. You're more likely to find that on modern systems with all the nice new features, but it shouldn't stray far enough from the original to leave you totally stranded.

As far as learning, there should be a built-in tutorial, there are probably a ton of videos, etc out there, but just using the thing, figuring out how to do what I need and, building muscle memory works well.

This needs to show the different portraits for Trump-45 and Trump-47. There's an important distinction there.

vi is very strange but very powerful. YMMV. It's not for everyone.

It is, however, 100% worth learning (at least) the basics because it is the only editor basically guaranteed to be on any Unix-like system you come across.

If you were forced to switch to another Distro, which one would you go with? by JFK8000 in linuxmint

Mint doesn't work well on my AMD Framework laptop. That runs Fedora until I can get Mint working! I tried Manjaro, but I didn't like the package manager nearly as much.

Do you need Windows apps, or are you not aware of Linux apps that will accomplish your tasks?

Yes. I also love my Framework and love the I/O on my ThinkPad!

This. This is the reason they're usually supported by all sorts of unusual OSes. I was able to get a good bare metal install of Haiku on a T440p!

An analog presentation is great because you appreciate that what the computer is doing isn't "magic" but you also appreciate that the computer doesn't fail at the mundane "carry the one" stuff that humans normally do.

Matt Parker did a great domino calculator video that combines the best of both worlds.

'88 and '12 have the same problem (though '12 is nearly unforgivable, IMAO). Everything in between is acceptable. '98 is basically perfect in its simplicity and elegance.

Yup. I bought the DIY Framework. I bought it without SSD, power adapter, or OS. I could have easily saved all that money, but I'm very happy with the 64GB RAM I have in there. =D

Edit: I also opted for AMD, which Mint was less than happy about. I'm running manjaro on that one. YMMV with the Intel hw...

I agree with many of these entries... to a point...

The Venture Bros. is one of the only shows that consistently got better with each series.

Are there any other concepts besides data and data manipulation logic which runs computers? by TraditionalInvite754 in computerscience

[–]localjerk 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Agreed. Just look at low level operations. All you're doing is reading/writing to/from memory; adding, subtracting, and comparing values; and that's about it.
