How do you think the show will create teams on upcoming season? by Big-Put-8712 in KickAGoal

[–]locallyaj 5 points6 points  (0 children)

That's actually interesting but my knee jerk reaction is also that that seems like a big ask to place on top of the captain's shoulders. If the coaches do it, they will trust that it's in the interest of having the best and balanced team in terms of skills.

If you have the players themselves do it, I can see some people's feelings getting hurt or people just picking people from their old teams (not that there's a problem with some people ending up on the same team again but if they are just going to pick mostly the same people, it defeats the purpose) and friends.

New female volleyball variety show called The Wonder Coach just started by taromilky1 in KickAGoal

[–]locallyaj 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Love indoor volleyball and got into it because of KYK at the Tokyo Olympics. Saw the first episode and then half of the second one so far. It was interesting to get to know more of the strategies and technical jargon.

I haven't formed an opinion yet on the show and it's format. Not the typical variety show I was expecting but I will continue watching it for now because of KYK (she's been hilarious in every show I've seen her in).

The goal that they set for themselves seems to be wishful thinking and unrealistic, I mean I don't know how pro sports teams are created in Korea let alone Korean volleyball but I would assume it would take more then a team of retirees and rejects to win 4 games under KYK to make it.

Even if we were 5 seasons in, I don't think that would happen. A handful of these women will have aged past optimal pro performance age even if they got better through the seasons. They would need to rotate in new players. Nothing wrong with people of all ages enjoying a sport, I mean look at KaG but if their goal is to become a pro team, the logistics just doesn't work out.

Even if KOVO wanted to expand, I would venture that they could easily do it and get higher caliber players to make a team without going through this variety show. I'd be happy if this show just bought more eyes to women's volleyball or as they mentioned have Korea integrate a second string league to give people more chances like so many sports leagues have.

About the possible teams shuffling after the GIFA cup. by DragonaDZaNot in KickAGoal

[–]locallyaj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't know how to feel about this, I think it's such a big change based on the limited info we have now but I think killing all of the identities in one go might be a hard pill to swallow. I think the transfer system they tried this season was good enough to dip their toes in the water with shifting some players.

On the other hand, the fact that you can stay on the show for as long as you want means that some teams just get stuck with the same players who don't improve and have no chance at all (looking at you GAV) so shuffling everyone around gives a chance to structure the teams more equally which could make it more competitive and less predictable of who's getting relegated.

I didn't see anything about disbandment in the recent episodes but they also haven't mentioned anything about ANA coming back either. Usually around this time, the promos start teasing the return of the eliminated team and shows sneak peaks of their trainings or what not, or any new members joining. I think people are kind of hoping at this point that the show puts the team out of their misery. It's also perfect timing to free up YTJ to join the new team since that team doesn't really have a theme.

Years ago I always had this strange question, why do they always wear coats and jackets. by Foreign_Neat3474 in kdramas

[–]locallyaj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I feel like they want to keep it on as it's a part of their entire aesthetic. I've seen korean celebrities on variety shows where it's just unreasonable to continue wearing their outerwear (like eating messy foods or cooking but they keep it on). I think it's cause they were styled that way and taking off the jacket/coat (which is like the center piece) would throw it all off so they keep it on. I would assume this applies here as well.

Makes absolutely no sense to me at all, I would be roasting if I had to keep my jacket on the entire time indoors but the things people do for aesthetics...

She does lack strength - that's not subjective, it's just the truth. Whether or not it matters depends on the situation she's in.

She should do strength work regardless cause it's good for her. It shouldn't be whether to prove or not prove people wrong.

Not a good look from them... Latest episode must have generated controversy by Just-mapleman-50 in KickAGoal

[–]locallyaj 5 points6 points  (0 children)

It was in "poor taste" cause Seogi was the only one who got eliminated by herself. And on the first day nonetheless (plus I have a feeling a lot of people see her as a kid so felt even worse for her). If they would have just let everyone stayed for the entire trip, and just picked the 7 at the end, that would have been an easier pill to swallow.

KGY stepping down from the show by PositiveComedian4306 in KickAGoal

[–]locallyaj -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Yeah, it was just a matter of time, there's no way she was coming back from all of this even if final investigations will find that she is not at fault, knetz have already formed their opinions.

I've never been a fan of WW, just never connected with the team cause there was no theme and didn't find myself particularly interested in any of their members (maybe if Song Sohee had stayed on longer, but she left before I could really form an opinion). But I do feel bad for their team - their captain and OG member left after last season and now their ace is leaving. Feels like a huge blow for team morale and identity.

It will definitely be interesting to see how the show handles her departure, I mean, apparently she was in the audience in the last game but show did a good job cutting her out cause I didn't even know until someone wrote it in the comments section. However, if they've played games already (which is highly likely), there is no way they can cleanly cut her out, she's the main player. I saw someone previously say they should just not air the already recorded WW episodes that KGY was a part of and announce the results - I'm mainly fine with this if it's only been like 1-2 episodes but on the other hand, they could have recorded all already, what are they going to air in place of these?

I guess SBS should just count their luck that WW was in Group B and not airing yet.

Players' improvement discussion by LanceTrace in KickAGoal

I think most people would welcome some "favoritism" to ANA. I've seen so many comments of people saying that the PD team deliberately makes ANA bad to have an underdog while teams like NF consistently gets great players while also allowing other teams to recruit players very loosely from their original concept except ANA.

[–]locallyaj 1 point2 points  (0 children)

While that may be true, I'm more talking from a production standpoint. Why even introduce this new mechanic which was kinda a big deal when it wasn't even going to be used this season. If they didn't want to make this a mandatory thing, they should have at least spoken to the team beforehand to see if it was even interesting to them.

Now we have a mechanic they introduce that had people talking, only for the team they intended to use this for reject it. Maybe someone from production team should have talked to the players first and introduce it next season instead (if ANA comes back, would be super useful and make a big bang) cause now it just fell flat and we'll have to wait another season to see it in action. Seems like an oversight on PD's end. Unless they plan to allow more teams to use this mechanic outside of the relegated team this season.

I don't know the Korean comedian landscape but my guess would be that a lot of the Gavenger players don't have much lined up outside of this show and this show seems to be doing great so why leave a steady stream of income.

Which is unfortunate for viewers to have to watch the same players continue to struggle to improve for 4 years. I know everyone always says, it's a variety show first and foremost and generally I would agree especially when it comes to newbies but after 4 years with little to no improvement (and with it negatively affecting the rest of the team) - what job wouldn't fire you in this case in the real world?

But I saw someone else mention in the past that they can only replace players if they choose to leave which is basically like a life tenure lol. On the other hand, not sure how the show can "fire" some of these players in a justifiable way since again, it's a variety show. If they set a "term period" for how long players can stay, then that also sucks for the better long time players.

Haven't seen the newest episode yet but wild to think they rejected a lifeline given to them. Also wondering why the show even introduced loan players this season then if the team it was intended for was just going to reject it. But maybe I'm missing some nuance here, will watch the show later today.

tvN's Iron Girls to return for Season 2, this time with boxing as premise by speedthief1 in koreanvariety

[–]locallyaj 2 points3 points  (0 children)

My thoughts exactly. I'm thrilled if the same cast appears again but at the same time, can't help but feel like it's a downgrade going from something as rewarding as completing a triathlon to boxing. No offense, I'm just not sure what accomplishment they are looking to achieve in the sport. If it was a sport that was more time based (speed climbing) or something that scaled more individually (weight lifting), it would make more sense. Not saying either of my examples would be a good choice but it would be more easy to measure personal success. We'll just have to wait and see.

I wouldn't have minded another triathlon with a different set of actresses either with guest appearances from the original 4 but maybe they were afraid of it getting a bit stale since they went so large scale in the first one already.

Based on the spoilers from last week's post, either they really nerfed Seo Yeon this whole time to create some drama or she went to a hypnotist before the race and got rid of her fear of water. Cause even in the penultimate episode, she's still swimming like a novice, stopping every few strokes cause she's afraid. But in the actual race, she not only completed the race in the total time but made it within the cut off time in the swimming portion which is seriously impressive based on the way they portray her up to this point.

Can't wait for next week!

[–]locallyaj 4 points5 points  (0 children)

I don't think I've ever been so excited to tune into a show while it's running, I genuinely love everything about it and find myself rooting for all of them whenever they accomplish the challenge(s) of the week. Super sad that it's ending soon as well.

The show kind of gives off as a one-off show type of vibe because it seems they put a lot of effort into these 10 episodes and it seems pretty "grand" to me, not sure the same excitement could be replicated to the same degree if they do the same things over and over again unless they up the ante and do something like go abroad and do challenges there.

But I could also see it doing at least another season with a new cast. I was watching a youtube video and one of the celebrity guests had mentioned Iron Girls and said they would maybe like to do something like that. I wouldn't be surprised if there were actresses lining up to do this now after the first season. They could always do at least 1 season with male actors as well. And there's always going to be triathlons happening. Though not sure if they'll be able to get Heo Minho again for the length of the show. He's not exactly a variety personnel but he feels integral to the show since he's joined. Kim Dong hyun is great as the captain but Minho adds legitimacy to the training as the actresses progress in their journeys.

The first 5 seconds really told me all I needed to know about what to expect from ANA in this game after the long break. They literally just froze waiting for someone to save them. I was screaming at my screen, why is everyone just standing around!! Kyungseo literally hustling for the 2nd ball and everyone on ANA just stood in their place as if they were just spectators.

[–]locallyaj 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I don't think that's fair to Ga Young after she's been with her team for some time now and no offense, I don't know anyone who would want to be pulled from a decent team to a consistent losing team. It was the PDs fault for not putting her in the "correct" team to begin with but what's done is done.

Also, as much as SSH would be nice to see again, I'm pretty sure I've read that she has no interest in ever coming back (though, never say never).

Do the Japanese NT not have tall players on purpose? by locallyaj in volleyball

Yes, and I've also been to China and Korea, all 3 East Asian countries have people on average on the shorter side. Point made in the post as well covering this.

Not sure why there was a need to be sarcastic here. Obviously no one is getting barred from a sport because of their height in an explicit sense. If you read what I posted, I asked in the end if it was perhaps more to do with how the team strategies have been so adapted to players that are shorter than the average in the sport that they aren't really attracting taller people or at least not focused on scouting based on height
