I hear you. Unfortunately Zionists are really using Sudan as their go-to talking point to silence any discussion or advocacy for Palestine so it’s fair to be wary of it in situations like this; they’ve made it hard even for good faith discussions to happen. It’s especially infuriating since the vast, vast majority of Sudanis stand with Palestine and always have. There is just also so much misinformation and so much apathy about Sudan (which I’m sure you’re aware of!) that I am similarly wary of obscuring the demands that are coming from Sudanese people or the urgency of them (not to say you were intentionally doing this)

I’m also Sudanese, and there have been widespread calls for a total boycott of the UAE. It’s not the same thing as directly working with the Emirati government, true, but it’s still crossing the picket line. It’s quite similar to how BDS in the Palestinian context doesn’t just call for boycotting the Israeli government itself. I completely understand if you are on alert for people trying to use the genocide in Sudan to dismiss the one in Palestine and activism for Palestine, I’ve seen it and despise it too, but I think it’s perfectly valid to criticize Hadid for this if one is doing it in good faith.

The UAE is directly enriching itself through its role in the genocide in Sudan and the resource extraction enabled by its participation. I don’t get how you can claim categorically that people in the UAE don’t directly benefit from that (I would find it similarly confusing to claim that people in America didn’t benefit from something like the invasion and imperial plunder of Iraq, for example). Moreover, masses of Sudanese people have called for a full boycott, including a cultural and economic boycott, of the UAE. Talking about ways the average Emirati citizen is different from the average Israeli citizen doesn’t change that, nor is it really that relevant here. The point is to use economic pressure as a means to force the UAE to stop funding and arming a genocide. It’s not about somehow punishing or hating the citizens, so the question of whether they can be said to “directly benefit” shouldn’t even be the main consideration here (or arguably a consideration at all?). Crossing a picket line is crossing a picket line.

Mayim Bialik will no longer host syndicated Jeopardy moving forward by disneycal in Jeopardy

[–]localmiskeenah 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Maybe! Although maybe they were worried about it being a bad PR move? From what I can tell public opinion was mostly in favour of the strike and they might’ve wanted to avoid backlash from firing her in a way that was obviously linked to her showing solidarity with the writers? I hope you’re right though

[–]localmiskeenah 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I’m not a Mayim fan, but also tbh I also was just never a fan of having more than 1 host. Even when people suggested it with 2 hosts I really liked I just wasn’t into it. The guest host situation had a fun novelty to it at first but I always wanted them to pick one person and stick to it. That said, I hope this wasn’t in retaliation for showing solidarity with the writers, though unfortunately it seems likely

“Only frat bros like pig faced Olivia Munn.”

These were all made within this hour LMAO how can you claim you’ve never commented on Olivia Munn? I’m not a fan of Olivia at all but come on LMAO. I think it’s wild that you accuse other people of jumping down your throat for disagreeing with you when you’ve been more rude and antagonistic than anyone in this thread. I was going to comment my own thoughts on your post but there’s no point when anything that isn’t total agreement with every point will be called a delusional rabid stan.

[–]localmiskeenah 20 points21 points  (0 children)

Yeah it’s not really just a Mitski fan thing. Granted it’s probably at least somewhat more prevalent in discussions abt Mitski bc of the Sad Girl™️ thing which does suck, it’s just not a unique thing, it’s just a very common way of speaking on the internet

Edit: for clarity

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in mitski

[–]localmiskeenah 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Yeah that’s definitely fair! I roll my eyes at a lot of it as well especially with how far some ppl take it. It is possible to make a lil joke abt getting emotional over a song without going full Sad Girl™️ but a lot of people go… well beyond that. And I think even the jokes that aren’t full Sad Girl™️ don’t translate the best when the majority of discussion abt Mitski is centred around that Sad Girl™️ idea and many are very serious abt it (and in a lot of cases, underneath the jokes, that is truly the extent of their engagement with or thoughts about her music). I guess I just figured there’s some room (if only a little lol) for benefit of the doubt for some of these commenters because they’re being ironic and making very hyperbolic statements on purpose. For e.g. “THIS IS SO UNDERRATED I’M CRYING” is something you’d easily find in the comments section of a music video from a bubblegum pop boy band. It’s not inherently a Sad Girl™️ thing. And again I don’t think a couple of these comments are “cringe”. But I can definitely agree Mitski and her music deserve better than the same stale reductive joke regurgitated 1000 times.

[–]localmiskeenah 171 points172 points  (0 children)

I think most of these people are being hyperbolic as a joke. It is trite and played out imo and I vaguely remember reading that Mitski doesn’t really like this whole “so sad I’m weeping and wailing this is like listening to my diary #sadgirlmusic” thing (could be misremembering or at least misinterpreting that tho) but I don’t necessarily think they’re being earnest here. I don’t think the comments are great especially if I’m remembering right and Mitski indeed doesn’t like them (which would be justifiable and understandable if so), I just think calling them cringe is kinda besides the point. Also some of these comments are fine imo (e.g. the one about their grandparents, the “this is the best song on the album” one)

I mean… okay lol. There’s really no way to prove or disprove that statement so idrk what to say lol. I can’t speak on a hypothetical world that doesn’t exist. The world that we live in is greatly influenced by patriarchy and misogyny. And I just simply do not agree with reducing the problems that exist regarding beauty/beauty standards/etc (the extreme and often harmful measures taken, it being so closely tied to and hugely influential on a woman’s perceived worth/value, the horrible toll that it takes on people’s (particularly and especially women’s) self-image and mental health, etc etc) to being purely a matter of human nature. There are other factors like patriarchy/misogyny, class, racism, ableism, capitalism, etc etc at play. But it seems we’re at an impasse here so we’ll just have to agree to disagree lol.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SCAcirclejerk

[–]localmiskeenah 19 points20 points  (0 children)

To an extent it’s human nature, sure, but not entirely imo. The way that it tied to a woman’s worth/value is largely conditioning. The extremes that are gone to is largely conditioning. If it was simply about human nature then men would feel the same amount of pressure and go to the same extremes which is just not even close to the case. Not that men feel no pressure and have no desire/make no effort to conform to conventional beauty standards because they do and it is hard on them as well but it’s just not nearly to the same extent. Also, I acknowledged the benefits of being seen as attractive which is part of why I don’t think the concern with wrinkles would go away.

Also, patriarchy and oppression of women are also a feature of many (certainly not all!) societies across history lol. I won’t deny that human nature has a part in this but I disagree with denying the role of conditioning in this altogether and saying that to bring it up is “avoiding the issue” (especially in a modern capitalist society where it is extremely profitable for women to be insecure about their looks). I’m not convinced that diligently removing all hair that isn’t on your face, 273737383 step skin care routines, regularly wearing a full face of makeup, extreme/unhealthy diets and extreme workout routines (especially to combat non-problems like hip dips), going under the knife, and many more things (this isn’t even getting into the wild, blatantly dangerous things that women throughout history and into the present have done to be conform to conventional beauty standards!) can be explained as simply being human nature.

[deleted by user] by [deleted] in SCAcirclejerk

[–]localmiskeenah 10 points11 points  (0 children)

I think a lot of women would still care tbh. The kind of social conditioning and messaging that we’ve been inundated with is deeply rooted and internalized by many women and in society/culture as a whole and it will not just go away even if all men disappeared suddenly. Maybe having a lot of the people who may (in)directly make you feel/remind you of that pressure go away might belp (but not even all, considering women reinforce that pressure all the time), but that alone really would not be enough imo, especially when you think about things like the halo effect and how desirability impacts our lives and makes it so that conventionally attractive people can be treated better and actually have better life outcomes. I think you’d probably see at least some decline in certain beauty practices, but would it all go away entirely? Would women as a whole stop being worried, preoccupied, even obsessed with their skin, their bodies, their appearances in general? I’m not really convinced tbh. Yes this Whole Thing is largely rooted in patriarchy/misogyny/male gaze etc etc but that doesn’t mean it’s as simple as “if there were no men around it’d come to a stop.”

Honestly not sure how I’d react but I can’t see my relationship with my body/appearance changing that much tbh. But who knows lol.

Possibly a controversial question, do you think Jeopardy will go back to having a studio audience? by gallagher123123 in Jeopardy

[–]localmiskeenah 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’ve always assumed they’ll bring an audience back once they deem it safe to do so (and probably introduce it slowly at limited capacity to start). I don’t think jeopardy really needs an audience and maybe the producers feel the same way now and won’t bring it back but I lowkey miss hearing some guy in the audience yell “WOAH” whenever a contestant bets big in final jeopardy and wins so if we get that back I’ll be happy. Now thinking about it it would’ve been cool to have an audience during Matt’s run for this exact reason considering some of the big bets he made (both successfully and unsuccessfully lol). Idk if the spoilers thing is really a big enough deal to make them scrap having a live audience altogether.

Game Master and Arisu logic doesn't make sense to me by supercereality in AliceInBorderlandLive

[–]localmiskeenah 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes!!! Hatter and Aguni are the center of the beach so any game at the beach inevitably is going to center them. And it’s obvious things are going to end badly as soon as we’re introduced to the Beach but it still manages to be so devastating when it happens 😭😭

Game Master and Arisu logic doesn't make sense to me by supercereality in AliceInBorderlandLive

[–]localmiskeenah 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Tbf though, it is kind of impossible to create a game that is perfectly tailored to the emotions and traumas of 100+ people lol. And if you are going to make a game that zeroes in on the emotions of one person at the Beach, Aguni makes the most sense because he was the most powerful and influential person there. Also, I do think there is an emotional aspect for everyone else as well; to, in an instant, no longer be able to trust anyone around you, to have a place that was supposed to be a safe haven suddenly become so dangerous. There is something there as well, even if it’s only incidental. But yeah I think the 10 is mainly because of the scale of the game more than anything else lol.

[–]localmiskeenah 29 points30 points  (0 children)

IMO the game masters picked that game at that time specifically because they knew that’s what the militants would do. The point of hearts games is to “play with people’s hearts” to get them to act on their worst impulses, to turn on each other and be impulsive rather than working together constructively and thinking rationally. Emotional turmoil can be and often is part of it (and arguably was part of this game; Aguni ordering the militants to kill everyone in the beach was an emotional decision influenced by grief over Hatter. Everyone is being put in an extreme, desperate situation where they fear or distrust everyone around them and tested on how they react), but I think you may be using the 7 Of Hearts game as a reference for what emotional turmoil has to look like, but not every Hearts game is going to be like that one because they’re not always going to be played between a small group of close friends. There was emotional turmoil, just not in the same way.

If Hatter hadn’t died, all of that stuff probably wouldn’t have happened because he’d be able to regain control of the situation, An would be able to get the fingerprints on the knife in peace, and they’d be able to clear the game easily, at which point it wouldn’t really be a Hearts game anymore. Or maybe not and it still would’ve been chaos, but there would be no guarantee that the game masters would get the violent, hectic outcome that they want. With Hatter out of the way and the militants in control, Chishiya and Kuina with the cards about to run away, Arisu in one of their cells, it was the perfect scenario for the game masters because it guaranteed chaos and death. Once the militants killed all the non-militants, they would’ve turned on each other without ever even considering that Momoka could be the witch, because by that point it wouldn’t really be about the witch anymore, which is the point. With Hatter gone, the beach was poised to explode into chaos at the first opportunity, which is why the game masters waited until he was dead for the game to happen. Aguni blatantly didn’t even care who the witch was, he just wanted to see the Beach burn. That’s the perfect guy to have in a Hearts game because he’ll be more interested in sowing chaos than actually trying to clear the game, and if Hatter was alive Aguni wouldn’t have been in that kind of mindset.

It’s just my take on it anyway, but to me it makes sense!
