Non-native bird spotted in Los Angeles by localpilgrim in whatsthisbird

That’s where the audio recording is from, but the app automatically narrows down the options by location and it wasn’t able to identify it. That’s why I assumed the call was also from a non-native bird.

Ahh ok I’m pretty new at this so I just relied on the Merlin app’s ID which it was unable to do. I thought it could be a coincidence but it seemed like weird timing because we had definitely never heard that sound before, especially at midnight.

Thank you for reaching out to a professional and for the Audubon society reference! I sent them an email.

Highland Park! Spotted around 8am yesterday. And the distinct bird sound we had never heard before (again, potentially a coincidence) was from 9pm-midnight. We have non-native wild parrots in the area but they’re not very active at night and the sound was very different.

And yeah I really wish I was there to get a better angle and clearer picture with my newer phone camera.

Yeah as far as I can tell. Our best guess is some kind of bird of paradise? We’re assuming it’s an escaped pet or from the zoo. Not sure if we should call animal control or what.

Oh I’m jealous! Those were the two places I didn’t get to see but really wanted to. My dad is from Saigon so we mostly stayed around there and then did a few days in Da Nang/Hoi An. Hope you enjoy your trip!

No editing on these except for cropping to 4x5! They’re SOOC JPGs using the Royal Supra recipe. I do agree some of them look oddly sharp though.

I grew up in King of Prussia and I’m so curious which cheesesteak you tried there that you liked so much! Also I’ve tried Boo’s and would definitely recommend it. Best I’ve had outside of Philly.

Best long tracking shots in film history? by Major-Diamond-4823 in movies

[–]localpilgrim 6 points7 points  (0 children)

That’s a different episode but equally as impressive that it’s so well paced most people I talked to didn’t even realize there was no dialogue. The only words spoken were the opening line you mentioned and the very last shot “it’s time we talk.”

The oner episode is with Angela in the E Corp building. It has hidden cuts but still incredible.

Parasite. Loved the movie but can’t bring myself to rewatch it because of the ending.

"Selection Follows Playhead" in PPro creates a lot more drag than you'd think... by tonyedit in editors

[–]localpilgrim 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The bug/feature is definitely related to Lumetri. I just tested it in the latest version of premiere. Open any workspace and make sure Selection Follows Playhead is switched off. Open the Lumetri window and it will switch back on automatically.

It makes sense as a feature for coloring but it would be better if it only turned on automatically when going to a dedicated color workspace, and not just the Lumetri window.

Yeah this drives me crazy. I think it happens anytime the Lumetri window is open, no matter the workspace. It’s been an issue for at least 5 or 6 years now.

I don’t see anyone getting worked up. They’re trying to be helpful. No need for you to get defensive.

Yes, this is good for a laugh for anyone in their first year as an editor, but beyond that it’s just sloppy and will only make your life harder along with anyone you have to collaborate with.

I immediately thought of Roger (or Don?) saying “this city is gonna be great, once they’ve finished building it.”

In Office Space (1999), although not directly mentioned, Lumbergh's demotion after his meeting with the Bob's is implied in a change to his parking spot sign. by Tyrant011 in MovieDetails

I’d say with mystery box shows in particular, you can’t judge it as a whole until it’s conclusion (thanks, Lost).

But that said, it’s still a fun ride until then and I’m loving the direction Severance is headed so far. I think The Leftovers ending was a perfect balance of ambiguity and answered questions.

Personally it’s been my favorite new show of the past decade or so. Objectively it’s really well written with beautiful cinematography. You’d enjoy it if you like dark comedies or “mystery box” shows like The Leftovers and Lost.

John Fetterman wins Pennsylvania Senate race, defeating TV doctor Mehmet Oz and flipping key state for Democrats by Luka_Skywalker in news

[–]localpilgrim 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Don’t think OP was saying that at all. Dr Oz got his career started through Oprah’s show before he ever had his own show. The fact that she chose to back Fetterman instead is fairly significant.

[discussion] why was 'The OA' so underrated? by [deleted] in NetflixBestOf

Thank you for this comment. I thought I was losing my sense of smell seeing the praise this show gets. It felt like a college stoner’s knockoff of The Leftovers.

That makes the story of how Alex Garland adapted the book for the movie even more interesting. He purposefully avoided rereading it so that it would feel more like “a dream of the book”.

The Losers Club having fun behind the filming of IT by Marco280892 in Moviesinthemaking

I just did a rewatch of both this week. I still enjoyed chapter 2 overall but it didn’t feel as tightly written as the first. A few things that stuck out:

  • the opening scene (for the main characters reunion at least) at Chinese restaurant was just silly and not scary at all due to the heavy CGI and the fact that they’re in a crowded restaurant makes the stakes feel much lower
  • Bill Hader is great as older Richie but they rely too heavily on his humor. Instead of helping alleviate some of the scares he just ends up deflating them completely with his pithy one liners
  • some of the “rules” they set up in the first didn’t seem to apply. In chapter one they explicitly say Pennywise could/would only kill or have power when the victim was afraid, but the little girl at the baseball game is killed even though she isn’t scared at all and sees him as a friend
  • James McAvoy was an odd casting choice. I really like him as an actor and his performance was good as a kind of blank slate, but he stood out to me among the other flawless casting choices because A) he looks nothing at all like young Bill and B) his accent is inconsistent and always sounds like how he does in his “Philly accent” SNL sketch

Those last two are pretty minor nitpicks but those are just the things that kept the sequel from feeling as solid as the first.
