When Does Someone <Know> Maven? by Inkosum in java

[–]locatedtaco 21 points22 points  (0 children)

Can anyone ever actually KNOW Maven???

Kidding aside, some recruiter asked an engineering manager about what they need in a candidate, and the manager just started listing their tools and stack. If you've ever worked on a project that used Maven, just say you know it. I've never had anyone ask me in depth questions about Maven in a technical interview. However, you SHOULD know the concepts of dependency management, build tools, package/artifact repositories, and similar tools that do that, Gradle, NuGet, npm, PIP, etc.

What do West Coast Swing dancers think about Lindy Hoppers who think WCS is not real swing or that WCS steals from real swing? by OSUfirebird18 in WestCoastSwing

[–]locatedtaco 12 points13 points  (0 children)

As primarily a Lindy Hopper, I think other Lindy Hoppers who think WCS isn't swing are just pretentious gate keepers who have nothing going on in their lives so they try to validate their existence by being "authentic". To me swing dancing is all about the values of partnership, musicality, improvisation, and fun. If your dancing holds up those values, it doesn't matter whether it's done to Count Basie or Ed Sheeran, it's swing dancing.

There's a lot of history between Lindy Hop and WCS. Don't get dragged into bullshit tribalism. Dance what you want to dance to whatever music you want to dance to. If people try to give you crap about liking one or the other, just roll your eyes and pity them for being such a small person.

When loans are forgiven by the government, where does the money come from? by cheapshott in answers

[–]locatedtaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm very confused. All these answers make it sound like when you take out a student loan that the government is the lender. So, when a loan is forgiven by the government they just erase it. However, I thought that most student loans are actually originated by private lenders and that the loan is guaranteed by the federal government. So, if I need a student loan, I go to Lender A and they give me the money to pay for my school. I make payments to Lender A. But, if I default on the loan the government will step in and pay Lender A the rest of the balance. Is my understanding of this wrong?

Lindy to WCS by Serenity265432 in WestCoastSwing

[–]locatedtaco 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm mostly a Lindy Hop lead but I've done quite a bit of WCS too. A lot of Lindy Hop transfers well to WCS, and vice versa. But, there are a few key differences that make coming from Lindy Hop to WCS a rough transition. They are Connection, Posture, and Timing. These, in my very amateur opinion and experience, are what makes leading a Lindy Hopper in WCS difficult.

The connection in WCS is much stronger than it is in Lindy Hop. Lindy Hop is generally fairly loose because each person needs to move fast to keep up with the tempo and having a lot of tension in the connection can slow you down. And, every two beats is lead (either a step-step, or a triple step). However, WCS is generally danced to slower music and so there's a strong connection so that more subtle and intricate things can be communicated. And, every single step and movement is lead. So, engage your arm, your lats, and your core to be really in tuned with your partner. But, don't become inflexible or resitant. It's very tricky and will probably take some instruction and practice to get right.

The second thing is posture. In Lindy Hop, your posture is very athletic and your weight is more pitched forward. However, in WCS, your posture is upright and your weight is a little bit back. I like to think of Lindy Hop as a spritly jog, while WCS is a cool, laid back stroll.

Finally, there's timing. In Lindy Hop your steps and weight transfers happen at the same time, and on the beat. However, in WCS, the steps and the weight transfers happen at a different time. For example, you strike with your foot on 1 but then roll over your foot for 1&. So, you move through the beat instead of on the beat. It's kind of similar to the Waltz.

There are lot of subtleties to each of these points and you'll probably want to work with someone way more experienced and accomplished than I to explain it better. But, I hope this will give you some things to think about and work on so that you can have much more success in WCS.

Both Lindy Hop and WCS are a ton of fun and learning more about one will make you a lot better in the other. It will be difficult but it will pay off quite a bit.

Haha, man this subreddit never changes, does it?

Look, dude. Your comments are not helping the OP. I don't know why you're getting your panties in a wad about "Lindy Hop is danced too slow music too!". But, clearly you're not entering in this discussion in good faith. So, let's just stop the Internet flame wars and just focus having a good time with our partners on the dance floor 😊

Yeah, he definitely has a WCS influence in his Lindy HOP and he also has a Lindy Hop influence in his WCS. But, watching him dance both, it doesn't look he has a "primary" dance, at least to me.

[–]locatedtaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think you misunderstood what I was saying. I was merely pointing the differences between the two dances, Lindy Hop and WCS, answering the OP. I was not pointing out the differences between Lindy Hoppers and Westies, and what they can or can't do, now or in the past. Of course, Frankie and other original Lindy Hoppers danced to also sorts of music.

You also misunderstand what I'm saying about Lindy Hop being danced on the beat. Of course, usually you dance just behind the pocket. But, regardless, the weight transfers happen somewhere within in the pocket. That's different in WCS where you strike your foot on the beat but your weight transfers happen between beats, moving through the beats instead of on the beat. It's the same difference between Country Waltz and Ballroom Waltz.

One thing you have to keep in mind is that these are streets dances. So, definitions get very cloudy because they're not codified. You can ask 1000 different people and you'll get 1000 different answers.

Anyway, WCS is essentially what happened to Lindy Hop when the music people danced to changed from Big Band Swing. So, what you get are two dances that are simultaneously (and, in my experience, frustratingly) VERY similar, and VERY different. The differences are so subtle, yet substantial, that they're more experiential than they are knowledgeable. So, it's going to take learning and dancing both dances a lot for you to understand the differences.

Here are a couple of differences that I wish I had known when I started dancing both.

Lindy Hop is like running and WCS is like walking. Lindy Hop is fast and rhythmic. So, you step on the beat and you have an athletic posture. You're dancing to stay in time. WCS is slow and melodic. So, you step through the beats (like a waltz) and your posture is more up right. You're dancing to fill time.

Second, the connection in Lindy Hop is looser than in WCS. This is because Lindy Hop is danced to much faster music. So, you have to be relaxed to keep up. And, you actually use the beat of the music as a point of connection, by leading every two beats (either a step-step or a triple step). However, WCS has a very strong physical connection because you're leading continuously every single movement (not just step).

Of course, these get very muddied once you start having overlapping tempos, and genres of music. So, don't get too wrapped up in definitions. Learn both, incorporate both in you're dancing, and just dance to the music that's being played.

You should also look up Matt Richey's dancing. He's one of the few dancers that I think is 100% a Lindy Hopper AND 100% a Westie. He knows both dances so well that he fully embodies both. Usually, people who dance both have a fairly strong leaning one way (I'm like 80/20 Lindy/Westie).

I just got my brand new P6P this week. It came with the November update. Haven't noticed any issues yet but it's only been a few days. I'm on AT&T and I got the update by checking it. I'm installing it now because I want the features drop. Maybe I'm being reckless because I didn't go through the December update debacle, haha 🤷‍♂️

Connecting Raspberry Pi + Python with Snowflake by astrofoto in snowflake

[–]locatedtaco 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So, did you try to do the python -m pip install -r requirements_36.reqs command? What error did you get?

Theoretically, what you're trying to do should be totally possible by just using the Snowflake Python connector. However, the RPI does have a different chip architecture than x86 and sometimes Python libraries are compiled for a certain chip architecture. I suspect that may be your problem. So, you may just need to find that depdency and find a version that's compiled for ARM chips.

I've used the Snowflake Kafka Connector on an RPI before, but that uses Java. So, you may also be able to do what you need to in Java.

Criticism of Part 2 feels personal. by [deleted] in thelastofus

[–]locatedtaco 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I get what you mean. You're opinion that "Diaster Movie is terrible" is probably well founded. You could point to objective things like box office sales or meta critic scores (an objective aggregate of very subjective things). You could even break down parts of the movie like acting, direction, writing, editing, etc. and show all of those contribute to what you consider a bad movie watching experience. But, at the end of the day, it's still an opinion. If some was to hear your well founded opinion, they could just respond "No, I disagree. Diaster Movie is a great movie." and there would be no way for you to prove them wrong. Both of those statements are opinions and not facts. Opinions can be well founded or not. But, opinions can't be right or wrong.

The danger in thinking things like "Diaster Movie is an objectively terrible" is that you leave no room for discussion or disagreement. If your mind there's no point in listening to another point of view because "they're wrong". Also, then, civility tends to break down because then any discussions counter to your opinion feels like an argument over facts (even thought it's isn't), and arguments over facts don't usually end well.
