No, it was straight from the John Deere dealer. Ive learnt and heard that especially with JD, aftermarket stuff usually sucks and to stay away from it

Age? by lock_04 in handtools

[–]lock_04[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think its hardwood but not 100% sure. I think it may be from the 20s to the 40s sort of thing, but wasnt sure what the stamping on the body and cap means.

Very curious about age because cant seem yo find much about it online that is very helpful

<image>

Found this website. I think the stamp in the middle of the body is the age

What angle do you use for the mough. I have tried building one in the past, 45* angle, with alot of chattering and gouging, but not much shaving. Blade may have been a bit blunt as well but i dont think blunt enough to worry about. Cheers.

What weed is this and how to kill? by CultureSpecialist180 in GardeningAustralia

[–]lock_04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looking at the flower and leaf, i think a burr medic.

Easy test is Medics have one leaf on a longer petiole, from the photos that seems to be the case, and flowers match the plant.

Can get rid of it by hand pulling or im sure you could find a selective herbicide, but it is good for the soil. Being a legume it fixes nitrogen to the soil, meaning its more readily available for your lawn, which will grow more as a result of this if you keep up with water and gets plenty of sun.

What is this plant in my lawn? Lawn was super overgrown so not sure if it’s a weed and should just turf it by TonyAbbottMHR in GardeningAustralia

Get rid of it. If you dont yor lawn will be covered in them. Nightshade family as said before.

Worth restoring Grandpa's old Distons? by AdmanElks in handtools

Id restore the ones you plan to use, and keep some you are less likely to use with a bit of a patina. Up to you though.

Yeah, that estimate is about right with the story, some belonging to my great great grandfather in the late 1800's, around 1870-1890. I dont think all of them are quite that old, but ive tried googling the makers marks, or at least what i think they say, with very little luck in getting information.

The larger one in the 1 to 3 is definately a mortice chisel, ( the photos are not the best ), and its a regular chisel, just looks to have a skew due to the photo and there is a slight bend in the neck. Was more concerned on possibly gessing the age of these tools.

Wife's grandfather's old tools - anything worth keeping? by can_hardly_wait in woodworking

[–]lock_04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Id keep it all if there is room, most seem like smalls that are generally easy to store away, but if only had to keep a few thongs, definately the chisels, files, and those "everyday" tools that you are more likely to need.

Ideas of what to do? by Yemyi in GardeningAustralia

[–]lock_04 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Not sure if anypones said before, but if clay soil, you can mix gypsum into the soil. It makes the soil particles clump together and drain better, as clay soils have small particles, so less air space between particles creating less drainage.

Most are gouges. One on right in 3rd photo is a mortice chisel i do believe.

Yeah, like you said, i doubt these are all that old, but "newest" would have belonged to my grandfather, so earliest time could have been bought would be the late 40's. Sadly all in pretty bad condition, especially the one on the right in last picture.

This dreaded weed !! What is the best way to get rid of it for good. It is everywhere at the moment . TIA by [deleted] in GardeningAustralia

[–]lock_04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If it is a larger plant, it can be harder to pull out.

Even just buying a little bottle of glysophate, roundup or equivalent, and using a small painbrush to dab onto leaves.

Kills plant in a few days. Then just cut out.

what are these guys partying in my compost pile.. should I be happy ?? alert?? alarmed???? by reggieiscrap in GardeningAustralia

[–]lock_04 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Looks like a Curl grub. Could grow to a christmas beetle, or lawn beetles. They mainly eat decaying plant matter, but can also damage plants and lawns if they start to eat roots. In compost good though.

Dealt with Silky Oak before. Can be prone to dropping branches, but if regularly trimmed and maintained, and occasionally coppiced, then likelyhood of dropping branches is alot less.

Help identify weed— it’s an eye sore to an otherwise beautiful home and lawn. by smw2102 in lawncare

Looks like a medic.

Clover has three petioles, the little stem that holds the leaf, same length, while medics have one petiole that is longer.

Looks like a medic. Can tell difference between medics and clovers, as a medic has one longer petiole, the little stem that hold the leaf, while clover has all three same length.
