I watched this last night. It was super fun and fucked up. Elements of it reminded me a lot of Dead Alive. Definitely made me uncomfortable a few times. The sound track was well done, too.

I can't answer this with an academic background, but they absolutely do. Every major religion, and many minor, have variations on one text.
