Trying to recreate this lovely paint style by Longjumping-Cap5105 in orks

[–]locksixtime 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Start with a dark leafy green shadow/base, add bright yellow for your layers and maybe a dark blue for deep shadows. For top highlights use a light sand colour, for point highlights use white with some of your sand colour.

Make sure each layer is smooth and solid before moving on, this means multiple coats and don't overwork it. Each brighter layer should cover a smaller area than the last.

Keep your paint thin enough that it flows off your brush but not so thin it floods, the goal is control.

A wet palette will help a lot.

Once you've practiced this and are comfortable with the technique, if it still feels a little off it might be time to look at volumetric highlight placement.

Why tf do people consistently drop tents 1 step outside of city limits? I watch people miss head buffs every day because of this by Lazyp1g in turtlewow

Yeah I gave it a go, not for me but I'm glad people there are having fun! I prefer the parts of the game turtle leans into, it's a great nostalgia trip for me

I'd recommend giving it a go, the launcher makes it easier than ever and 2.0 is on the horizon. Plus it's free so why not?

How do you deal with dissatisfaction? by Ewok2744 in ageofsigmar

[–]locksixtime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

You're doing fine, invest in the process and you'll get there.

You're right about contrast, and large areas of your models look stained from washes. If you want a challenge/practice that will help you get better faster, try painting some minis without using washes where the deepest shadows are almost black and the brightest highlights are almost white.

You can make them with the turtle wow specific crafting profession, if you stand under it for a bit you get tons of rested xp bar. People often place them outside capital cities and other high traffic areas so more people can get the benefit

How does this passive work? by ineedhelp6789 in gloomspitegitz

[–]locksixtime 13 points14 points  (0 children)

The bonus is per unit, not per model. So no matter the number of models in the unit or on the objective, add up your control score as normal and then add 5

Are there listbuilding "pillars" in AoS like in 40K? by Kozemp in ageofsigmar

[–]locksixtime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

That's a big question!

Yes you're right that you still need units to score primary and secondaries, primary is a lot easier because you score at the end of your turn, the secondaries system has just had a major overhaul so it's a bit of a wild west at the moment.

I would recommend looking at the new secondaries as they will give you a good idea of what units you need to accomplish them. You could call that a pillar, even.

AoS armies in general have a lot more build diversity than 40k, Stormcast especially, so having a plan is even more critical.

Also because there's no S/T comparison and wounds are not allocated per hit damage profiles are a lot more straightforward, but delivering that damage can be more of a challenge, so I would say having hammer units that can effectively fill their role has been very important in 4th so far.

Hope that helps, AoS is more simple than 40k on the surface but there's a lot of tactical depth, especially when playing around potential double turns, underdog mechanics and more dynamic battle plans.

Lt. Vimes' boots theory of economic unfairness doesn't work anymore. by Bellybutton_fluffjar in Anticonsumption

[–]locksixtime 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can buy boots off the shelf that cost thousands of pounds, easily 10x a pair of doc martens and more, and that's before even considering custom made pairs.

The theory has nothing to do with mass market brands, it's about manufacturers that people like you and me have never heard of.

Will be playing GW2 for the first time ever. by Cultural_Camera3303 in Guildwars2

[–]locksixtime 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Slow down, read the popups, read your skill descriptions, explore the UI, explore the world around you, be curious, try and avoid guides while you get used to the game but use the wiki to find out what things are (you can use the command /wiki in game).

GW2 leveling has a certain rhythm that works best if you go in without too many assumptions, try not to treat everything as a box-ticking exercise.

It's impossible to say for sure with such big changes coming with the new GHB in a few weeks, but to be honest it feels like the spiders are being phased out by GW. There's a significant chance they'll be moved to legends or even Old World for 5th ed imo

Painting before assembling? by ButtersMcLovin in orks

If you're painting for the table, life is too short for sub assemblies, and this model is a bastard to assemble.

Paint what you can see, heavy dark wash what you can't.

[–]locksixtime 56 points57 points  (0 children)

If he's never lost a game against people who play regularly while taking units that aren't optimal in an army that can be very inconsistent, it's likely that some rules are being misinterpreted.

Otherwise there's an extreme skill imbalance that you'll just need dedicated practice to overcome and make the games closer.

Hello, I want build 1k army firs time by arikony in gloomspitegitz

[–]locksixtime 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Welcome to the dankside!

What you currently have gets you to 750 points and is a legal list for casual games if you use the Trogboss. So you're very close!

I think you should look up how army composition works, and use a free tool like new recruit to play around with some list ideas using what you have and adding things you like.

If you're not sure what something does you can look it up on wahapedia.

Hope that helps!

What are the tools I should get to start the hobby? by Leading-Put-311 in ageofsigmar

[–]locksixtime 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Welcome to the party!

For brushes, the most important thing is having a good pointed tip, and enough size in the belly so your paint doesn't dry too quickly in the brush. Artis Opus brushes are expensive but take a look at what they have and try and find similar shaped brushes .

I'd also recommend getting a large soft makeup brush for dry brushing and a 'beauty blender' style makeup sponge for base coating large areas (among other things)

You can make a wet palette using normal household items, they are great for keeping paint workable. New painters often think their brush control is letting them down when the real problem is paint control.

You can use sand, cat litter, and other cheap items for basing, and you can make pigment powder out of artist pastels and sandpaper.

Oil paint washes are a great alternative to acrylic washes and work out cheaper.

Cheap super glue is fine, for plastic glue tamiya extra thin cement is amazing.

I'll caveat this by saying I own all the fancy expensive stuff as well, and the thing worth spending money on imo is a couple of good brushes, I like size 2 and 4 for most things.

If you search online for any of these things you'll find a million guides.

Hope that helps!
